I remember the glib response I repeated so many times. My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a cou- rageous action without considering the consequences--a soldier who crawls out of a foxhole to drag an injured buddy to safety. And I also meant individuals who are slightly larger than life: Hou- dini and Lindbergh, John Wayne, JFK, and Joe DiMaggio. Now my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary indi- vidual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of over- whelming obstacles: a fifteen-year-old boy who landed on his head while wrestling with his brother, leaving him barely able to swallow or speak; Travis Roy, paralyzed in the first thirty seconds of a hockey game in his freshman ye ar at college. When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked'What is a hero?' I remember the glib response I repeated so manytimes. My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a cou-rageous action without considering the consequences--a soldierwho crawls out of a foxhole to drag an injured buddy to safety.

And I also meant individuals who are slightly larger than life: Hou-dini and Lindbergh, John Wayne, JFK, and Joe DiMaggio. Now mydefinition is completely different. The whole world held its breath when Christopher Reeve struggledfor life on Memorial Day, 1995. On the third jump of a riding com-petition, Reeve was thrown headfirst from his horse in an accidentthat broke his neck and left him unable to move or breathe.

In the years since then, Reeve has not only survived, but hasfought for himself, for his family, and for the hundreds of thou-sands of people with spinal cord injuries in the United States andaround the world. Now, think of Christopher Reeve . Many of us re-member Reeves as invincible Superman. He not

only had super strength but super powers, hecould literally fly. More than that, Christopher Reeve had the fantastic physique to make therole he played to super stardom, magical and be-lievable.

Then, in 1994, a tragic horse riding accident leftReeve paralyzed from the neck down for life! Ini-tially, the meaning he attached to the accidentwas that his life was over and that he would be aburden to everyone.

Utterly depressed Reeve wanted his doctors totake him off life support and allow him to die. Itwas his wife who asked him to give himself (andhis family) two years. If, at the end of the twoyears, he felt the same way, they would find away to let him go

But as Reeve ‘s rehabilitation began, surrounded

by his very loving and supportive family andfriends, he started to attach a totally differentmeaning to his disability. He began to see that he(because of his fame) could become an inspirationand symbol to all those who are suffering fromvarious disabilities, and who have lost hope.

The meaning he gave to his experience put him in

a resourceful state. As he continued to bear hismassive disability stoically and improve, bit by bit,he started to write what went to become a best-selling book called ‘Nothing is Impossible’ .

Though imprisoned in his body, Reeve gave hun-dreds of moving speeches and inspiring seminars;he even directed a movie and won an academyaward.Millions around the world have been in-spired by Reeve indomitable spirit and he hasraised millions through the Christopher Reeve foundation.
