    General guide to NMMU

Message from the How2@nmmu orientation teamDear new Madibaz

Welcome to Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity (NMMU)!

Coming to university for the first time is often anexciting, life-changing experience. However, it canalso be challenging and stressful. The transitionoften involves major changes, like leaving friends

and family for the first time, coming to grips with anew course and independent study, discovering newways of doing things and facing new expectations.

It is normal to experience some diffi culties whileadjusting to your new life at university. Our goal is toget you off to a good start in adjusting successfullyto the demands of higher education.

We have spent a great deal of time preparing foryour arrival. The orientation programme for first-years is called How2@nmmu: how2 do things at

NMMU, how2 succeed at university, and so on. Wehave academic, wellness, career, social, culturaland sports events planned for you, some to helpyou understand how you can study and learn in auniversity setting, and some just to have fun andmeet new people. This is an important kick-off foryou and it is compulsory to attend all AcademicOrientation events, some of the Wellness eventsand the Byways to Highways (Societies, Sport andSupport Services Expo).

    Your How2 orientation leader (How2 Buddy), a

senior student doing the same course as you, willguide you through a programme of academicorientation prepared by the Student Counsellingdepartment. You will meet your lecturers and fellowstudents who will be studying the same course. The buddies will be easily identifiable by theirblue T-shirts and willing and ready to answer anyquestions you may have. It is our aim to ensurethat you have a positive experience during yourorientation.

The programme is only the start of activities designedto assist you in adjusting successfully to university.Your How2 orientation leader will buddy you forthe first term to support you in the challenges youmay face along the way.

Attending orientation will give you a head start inmeeting new friends and staff and becoming familiarwith what is expected of you. Studies have shownthat students who attend orientation adjust with fargreater ease and have a better chance of success. If you miss orientation you will be at a distinctdisadvantage! See you there!

    Warm regardsThe O-Team

Welcome from the Dean ofTeaching and Learning

A warm welcome to students in the Class of 2016.

You have every reason to feel proud of the fact thatyou are one of only a few young adults in your agegroup that has the opportunity to study at university. However, very soon you will discover that theres abig jump from being a learner in Grade 12 to beinga student at NMMU. One of the most importantchallenges you will have to master is adjusting tohow learning works at university and the greaterindependence that is required of you, which comes

along with the responsibility to exercise yourfreedom of choice wisely.

First-year students tell me that the orientationprogramme that we offer before lectures start reallyhelped them to settle into their academic studiesand to become part of our campus communities. So, choose to participate in orientation activitiesrather than not to. Also, as you progress throughyour studies, grab hold of opportunities to developyourself holistically both in your learning programmeas well as in co-curricular activities outside of the

classroom (e.g. get involved in student societies, leadership development, being a peer learningfacilitator, community projects, and so on).

You are at the start of a very exciting moment inyour lifes journey. Good luck and make the most ofit.

It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one

    person from another.- Nelson Mandela

Guidelines from theOrientation TeamHow to help your son or daughter succeed

Here are specific things you can do to help your son or daughter achieve academic success:

}Encourage them to attend the first-year orientation programme. Events in this programme provide acritical link between high school and first-year university and are designed to help first-year students builda support network, access campus resources and understand the intellectual expectations of university.Research indicates that students who participate in orientation programmes settle into university life morequickly than those who dont.

}Encourage them to treat academic efforts like a full-time job.If a full-time student can commit to a 35 to40-hour academic week (hours in class and hours spent studying), he/she increases his/her likelihood ofbeing successful. Research has shown that students who see university as a part-time job do not fare as

well.}Share the idea that intellectual work can be fun.University is a major responsibility, but it is also an

exciting opportunity for students to experience new ideas. Encourage your son/daughter to take coursesthat interest him/her. Lecturers and student counsellors can assist in finding courses that both fulfil therequirements for the degree/diploma and spark the students intellectual curiosity.

}Share that attending class is the first and most important component of student success.Irrespective ofwhether or not a lecturer has an attendance policy, it is of vital importance that all lectures are attended. Some courses have very specific attendance requirements that affect the students year mark. University isexpensive and students should strive to get their moneys worth from the experience.

}Encourage him/her to get involved in campus activitiessince this helps them to network, build relationshipsand develop leadership skills. This also improves their marketability in terms of future employment.

}Encourage him/her to develop an attitude for success. A positive attitude will add considerably to thestudents success. Parents have significant influence over the new university students sense of self-confidence and self-worth. To maintain your sons/daughters confidence, your communications with him/her should always be encouraging.

}Encourage him/her to seek help from the Financial Aid offi ceshould additional finance for studies berequired.

}Encourage him/her to identify problem areas at an early stage and to seek help to overcome them.Typical examples of problems are:

Stress experienced from feeling overwhelmed Adapting to a new learning and living environment

Homesickness Feeling lonely before friendships and activities become established Diffi culty managing money The challenge of dealing with new-found freedom

Remind your son/daughter about the importance of attending orientation!

First-Year Success ProgrammeNMMU is deeply committed to equity and redressin terms of access to university studies and equity

of outcomes. As a result, NMMU has adopted anaccess for success approach and has a numberof mechanisms in place to broaden access andenhance success. NMMUs approach to studentsuccess has its roots in a student lifecycle approach.

Consequently, student support and development islinked to the main stages of the student lifecycle, namely:

    1. Pre-entry advice and career/programmeguidance

    2. Admissions, registration and orientation3. Negotiating the first year of studies4. Progressing and thriving through the study

programme5. Preparing for the world of work and life in the

    21st century

While a number of development and enrichmentopportunities, activities and programmes areprovided to students, NMMU wants to moreintentionally focus on growing the success of first-years. So, starting in 2016, NMMU is phasing in a

First-Year Success (FYS) programme to facilitate theholistic development of first-time entering studentsto enable them to successfully transition andintegrate into NMMU.

For you to derive maximum benefit from FYS, youneed to play an active role by:1. Taking responsibility and being accountable2. Attaining a sense of belonging to the NMMU

community/communities3. Being open to personal growth and purpose

development4. Contributing to dynamic learning opportunities5. Navigating your learning

In turn, we have put together a range of activitiesstarting with Orientation, continuing each term inclass as well as in curricular learning opportunities(e.g., participating in societies, sport, leadershipdevelopment, community outreach, mentoringfellow students) and online learning activities. Forexample, after the How2 orientation programme, interm 1 we will assist you to focus on:

} Clarifying expectations,} How to get the most out of lectures, note-

taking, and academic integrity,} How to access and use the Moodle-based LMS,etc.

You will be alerted to key activities at specificmoments during your first year via email, Facebookand Twitter as well as in class and at co-curricularsessions.

To assist you to connect the dots related to thevarious things that you are learning about beinga successful student during your first year, we are

going to give you a quote from Nelson Mandelafrom which we have posed some big questions. In developing your responses to these questionsthroughout the year, you will be able to bringtogether what you have been learning from variouscontexts, texts, fellow students, etc. in a focusedway. Throughout the year youll get a chance toshare your thoughts, dialogue with other studentsabout how they are grappling with trying to findanswers to the questions, and depict your learningin various ways (in writing, visually, via drama andpoetry, etc.).

So, heres the quote and big questions that we wantyou to grapple with throughout the 2016 academicyear:

    Nelson Mandela said

Education is the most powerful weaponwe can use to change the world

As you think about this quote:} What was the context in which Mandela

said these words? How might this add to themeaning of what he said? Can his words applyequally well in the context of NMMU, SouthAfrica and the world in 2016?

} How do we make sure that education reallydoes change the world? What aspects ofeducation need to change to make its role insociety more powerful?

} What are you doing as a first-year NMMUstudent that leads to the powerful change roleof education being achieved?

} How to log onto your e-mail, using the studentportal and finding your notes online

} Your timetable} Challenges you may face in this course and how

    to overcome them

Your How2 Buddy will buddy you for the firstterm, helping you to make a smooth transitionto university. You will meet informally once everyfortnight over lunch or coffee to chat about yourconcerns and challenges. Your How2 Buddy willalso be available to you via e-mail, Facebook, BBMor Whatsapp to find out how you are doing, and tosupport you in any way.

HOW2@NMMU: STUDENT - STAFF FUN EVENTAt this event you will have some fun with your

lecturers and get to know them better, so thatyou will find it not such a daunting task to consultwith them about your studies. It will also help youdevelop a sense of belonging. For most faculties thiswill follow immediately after your Connect with yourLecturers meeting (check your timetable for whenthis event will take place).

HOW2@NMMU: ACADEMIC SESSIONSThese sessions will be offered by your lecturersin the first term and will help you further in youradjustment to university and making a success of

    your studies.

NOTE-TAKING SESSIONSIn these sessions you will learn how to take notessuccessfully in class (when you get home you makenotes and summaries of the lecture). If you thinkyou are going to remember everything the lecturersaid, you are making a mistake! Lecturers giveimportant explanations of complex concepts andprocesses you need to take notes in the lecture but you cannot write down every word the lecturersays. This session will help you be better prepared to

take accurate notes from day one.

INTRODUCTION TO REFERENCING & PLAGIARISMWhen you write assignments and essays atuniversity, you have to acknowledge where youget your information from you have to say whoseideas you are using. Taking other peoples work andpretending it is your own is called plagiarism andis a serious offence! In this session you will receivesome more information in this regard.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF LECTURESIt is not enough to simply get the notes off the net.You have to attend the lecture! But merely sittingthere like a zombie will not help you much either. This is a wonderful session to help you make the

lecture work for you! It is vital to your success atuniversity.

LECTURE AND E-MAIL ETIQUETTEThere is a required protocol for lecture behaviourand writing e-mails to staff. A huge part of receivinga higher education is to develop yourself holistically.Learning about etiquette is an important part of thisdevelopment. Having good lecture etiquette willmake your life and that of your lecturer and class-mates better. Being considerate will assist everyonein their success.

Remember: It is important to consult with your lec-turers to get clarity on assignments, to gain a clearerunderstanding of the content and requirements ofthe course and also to develop your intellectual abil-ity. Lecturers have consultation hours, usually postedon their offi ce doors. They want you to do well. Donot hesitate to make an appointment, and have yourquestions ready. Your Buddy will tell you more.

CAREER PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT(PART OF HOW2@NMMU: THRIVE)

Here you will be shown the importance ofdeveloping your career portfolio, and how to startdeveloping it. Just obtaining a qualification is notenough you need to develop yourself holisticallyand be a well-rounded student. You can do thisby joining one of the many societies or leadershipprogrammes on the campus, and/or finding a part-time job. The need to develop your personal, socialand academic skills has become imperative (theseskills are what employers are looking for they areinterested in a good qualification and in the skillsmentioned). It is important that you start early on in

your university career. Waiting until your final yearjust before your first big job interview is too late!

HOW2@NMMU: MATHS REFRESHER(for all BSc and BSc Mechatronics students only)Given the challenges of the new school curriculum, the Maths Refresher will provide you with agood start to the Maths module in these courses, refreshing Matric Maths and bridging the gapbetween high school Maths and first-year universityMaths.

RANDS AND SENSE (PART OF HOW2@NMMU:THRIVE)Your How2 Buddy will share important informationabout bursaries and scholarships available to you. They will also help you with ideas on how to budgetwell. Some students receive bursaries, and for many, being away from home means running their ownbudgets for the first time this can be disastrousin terms of misspending and running out of money. It could mean the difference between leavinguniversity prematurely or graduating successfully.

students to further develop and refine their naturalhelping skills. Students (peer helpers) are trainedand supervised to provide listening, understandingand support to fellow students (their peers) andto refer them to available resources. They are alsoprovided with opportunities to put this trainingto practice by assisting other students in decision-making on matters such as life-style enhancement, career development and employability, as well aslearning and academic skills. Peer helpers can alsoassist and empower students to deal with issuesrelated to loneliness, problem relationships and

health (such as HIV/Aids). The ultimate aim of peerhelping is to assist students in creating beneficialliving and learning environments, making theiruniversity life as meaningful and enjoyable as it ismeant to be!
