Broadcast TV Provides Indoor, Urban Visibility

• Vertical Signals

• Low Power

• High Frequency

• Narrow Spectrum

Advantages of TV over GPS:

• High Power 1MW ERP typical (1000x GPS)• Low Frequency

50-750 MHz (stronger indoor signals)

• Horizontal Signals Less attenuation from walls than roofs

• Frequency Diversity Clear 6MHz channels, multiple channels per tower

~40 dB (10,000X) indoor power advantage

Terrestrial TV coverage provides a pre-built positioning infrastructure

• Terrestrial broadcast TV infrastructure is highly correlated with centers of population and commerce.

• In the US, 2800 towers broadcast more than 4500 analog and digital TV signals.

How TV-Positioning Works

5) Location Server computes position

Regional Monitor Unit covers 50-100km radius; sees same signals as mobile

device

3) Device passes information to Location Server

4) Aiding data

2) Rosum-enabled device receives TV signals and computes pseudoranges

1) Broadcasts contain synchronization information which can be used to measure timing.

Rosum vs. High-Sensitivity A-GPS

Rosum @ San Mateo County Parking GarageRosum @ Fisherman’s Wharf Parking Deck

High-sensitivity A-GPS device taken outside to open-sky area for five minutes and allowed to acquiresatellites, ephemeris data. Then the device was taken into the test area beside the Rosum devicewhere it lost the ability to tracking all satellites within 1 minute. Rosum was e9-1-1 compliant.

Mobile TV → Indoor Location

• ABI, Informa predict ~155M TV-tuner enabled mobile devices in 2010.

• TV tuner enables Rosum Software-only solution for the location of mobile devices

• Mobile TV transmitters (DVB-H, FLO, etc) can enhance existing TV coverage, further improving reliability, accuracy
