Andrt'na a!it"n,r, Smith.
St. John'>. Bluff. \lr. \'iereck sent a speues of the 7/·,rdta//drena group
from G eorgia, which was taken for alt<'!!tT. hut the true <litoltl is quite different
and apparently should be referred to the /',i/,nlilr.·n,r group. Its distinctive c haracters, in compuison with the (~eorgia :.pecies, are as follows:
L arger; fimbria lighter and redder; hair-hands very distinct on segments 2
to 4· but broadly interrupted on~: hind mugins of abdominal segments strongly
ye llowish; punctures of abdomen much les~ ~trong and distinct, especially 011
fi rs t segment; area of metathnra:-.. tri:tngubr, delic:ltely lnntJ7't'rsdy striate, not
a t al l longitudinally ridged, nut hounded by an ele\·ated rim; wings practically clear; tegulae small, dark reddish, con\'ex, extremely shiny; mesothorax
shining; tibiae and tarsi dark, nowhere :.trongly reddened: f.lcial fo\'eae prac
tica ll y obsolete (a short area without punctun·;, or pubescence adjacent to
upper part of eye); hair at sides of face \'ery white; a strong raised line from
middle ocellus to level of antennae antenna] joint.) :llJOut as long as 4'5;
eyes converging below; stigma narrow, clark reddish, the parts before and behind
the ma rginal n~rvure ahnut equal; tirst recurrent nervure joining second sub
ma rg in al cell at or almost at its milldle: m.trginal cell narrow, its tip distinctly
away fr om costa; outer scopa of hind tibiae \·ery long. somewhat dusky, espec
iall y tow a rds base, and \'cry strongly plumose. .\!together, this is a remark
able species.
\ l r. Viereck sent for comparison a presumed fr([:id,r from Seattll', \\'ash.
Compa t ison with the type showed that they had the ;-.une gener.tl .tppearance,
pubescen ce, etc. but althou~h \'ery closely allied, they :ne not the ~:11m· species.
The tyne fr!~ida differed as follows· stigm:1 lighter .1nd yellown; second sub
margi nal cell larger, and basal nervure meeting tran~n·rse-medial; abdomen
bro :Hler; . .i nd margins of abdominal st"gments dark reddi~h: third antenna]
joint longer tha :1 4 -t- 5; facial fovea broad, dark purple-brown (black in Seattle
insect); lateral hairs of f.lce, O\Trbpping fove.l, black; pn>t-ess of l.tlnum all sh iny, narrowly ~ubmarginat,·ly trunc.lte, with ~loping ~Hie:-. (in the Seattle insect
with a dull apical protuber.1nt an.:a.)

A111lrena moesta, Smi th A Corvallis, Oregon, speci men regarded as m oesta was sent by .:--Ir. Viereck.
Compared with the type, I fou nd the following resemblances and differences : t ype has ou ter margin of third submarginal cell much more curved, and a light amber stigma (stigma is dark brown in the Corvallis species): both have the same black facial fovea, the sa me pubescence, etc., and the abdomen is the same in both; type has fourth and base of fifth antenna! joint s reddish beneath, but thi s is not ve1 y conspicuous; tegulae of type are d istincly reddish behind.
The male type of moesta has long and blcate mand ib les, without any tooth b c: neat h or at base ; cheeks produced to an a ngle behind.
The <' or vallis insect probably should stand as a subspecies. It is recorded by Vie reck in C.nwd. J~·llft>!ll. 1 CJO-J, p. z:q .

The type, compared with a supposed mira11da sent by l\lr. Viereck, differed thus:-Riclges of metathoracic enclosure stronger, the surbce more shining between; scutellu m more densely (though irregularly) pun ctured, and th e pun ctures larger : when the thorax is viewed from above, t he hair. of tubercles, e tc. in front of the wings, is seen to be strongly ye ll owish ; facial foveae inclining to yellowi sh grey; an extre mely narrow line between bcial foyeae a nd eye (a narrow hut much broader area in the supposed miralldtr ); punctures of clypeus apparently rath er larger; t hird submarginal cell much more narrowed above, narrower above tha n second. The type has the tibiae and tarsi dark red; it has 11ot t he margin s of the abdominal segmen ts testaceou~. or it would see m to run to da)·to11ia1' in 1\.obe rt son's tables.
Smit h 's male mira11da appears to run in Robertson's ta bles t o marial', or it mig ht be held to run to dtrytollirre. The abdo men is more or less reddish -brown. By t he lig hter stigma, much less strongly punctu re d abdomen, e tc. it appears not to belong to the sa me species as the ? t) pe .

'? Th e t ype is very like ..!. <li;(<'IIIOllis, Ckll.; it d i ffe rs by having more black on abdomen, onl y the second segment bei ng entirely reel, or more red than black. The process of labrum is narrower; ape x of wings not so dark ; first abdominal segment b roader. A. ,u:r;ono11is is an id iumorph offt~ slllt>S tl .
