1 and 2 Kings were probably completed in their final form between 560 and 538 B.C.

The Books of 1 and 2 Kings were written to record history but, more importantly, to teach the lessons of history.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.

David began to reign as king at age thirty. 2 Sam 5:4

He reigned 40 years. 1 Kings 2:11

Seventy years old at this time.

1 Kings 1 1 Now King David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

His health had failed at age 70.David had lived a hard life, and it showed.

At the relatively young age of 70, he was dying.

2 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.

No matter how much cover they put over him, David was still shivering with the cold.

They found a solution that would please most men.

3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.

Abishag was young and beautiful; she cared for David and was his nurse;

She lay in his bed to keep him warm, but David was too old and sickly for sex.

5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king:

2 Samuel 3 1 Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. 2 And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

3 And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4 And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5 And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron.

Six sons by six women; And there were many more wives and children

as the years went by.

Each of these women would have had ambitions for her son, and taught them to her son.

10

Here we find the source of many of David’s family problems.

Multiple wives

17 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

In Deuteronomy God laid down the law for kings.

5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

Luke 14 11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

6 And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man (purty feller); and his mother bare him after Absalom. (TLB) 6 Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time -- not so much as by a single scolding! He was a very handsome man and was Absalom’s younger brother.

Fifty year old spoiled brat

13

Ephesians 6 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

David was a great king, and “a man after God’s own heart”.

But he failed his children in many ways.

Nurture includes cultivate, cherish, encourage, and support.

We must discipline and even rebuke our children, but never

harshly; always in love.

7 And he (Adonijah) conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

Joab was David’s nephew and had been commander-in-chief of his army.

He should have been loyal to David.

David had protected Abiathar and had done him nothing but good.

Disloyal

Page 15: 1 kings 1 david is dying

15

Good and loyal men

8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

Remember, Nathan was the prophet who rebuked David for his sins of adultery and murder.

Proverbs 27 5 Open rebuke is better than secret love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Page 16: 1 kings 1 david is dying

16

Loyalty is an essential trait of love.1 Corinthians 13:7 (TLB) If you love someone,

you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. …

David had some good and loyal men, who stood by him in his hours of weakness.

9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants: 10 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.

He threw a big party, but didn’t invite anyone who would stand against him.

Very near the king’s palace.

11 Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not? 12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.

Nathan knew of Adonijah’s treachery.

Maybe he had spies, maybe he could hear it, or maybe The Lord told him, but he knew all. Nathan wanted God’s Will done, and would help.
