The Queen of Sheba came to visit Solomon to hear the Wisdom of God from his lips.

They exchanged gifts worth millions of dollars.

1 Kings 10:11 And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones. 12 And the king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD, and for the king's house, harps also and psalteries for singers: there came no such almug trees, nor were seen unto this day.

They also began trade with one another.

Almugwood is strong, beautiful (black outside, ruby red inside), and long-lasting. Solomon used it in the temple steps (cf. 2 Chron. 9:11) as well as for the other purposes mentioned here.

13 And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

The giving was not just one way; it was mutual.

And the trade continued.

14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold,

666 talents = 25 tons of gold.

Per year

15 Beside that he had of the merchantmen, and of the traffic of the spice merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia, and of the governors of the country. 16 And king Solomon made two hundred targets (shields) of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of gold went to one target.

(TLB) Solomon had some of the gold beaten into two hundred pieces of armor (gold worth $6,000 went into each piece)

17 And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pound of gold went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

(TLB) and three hundred shields ( $1,800 worth of gold in each). And he kept them in his palace in the Hall of the Forest of Lebanon.

These gold shields would have been for show on the parade ground.

Gold is too soft for use in battle.

18 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the best gold. 19 The throne had six steps, and the top of the throne was round behind: and there were stays on either side on the place of the seat, and two lions stood beside the stays.

Extravagant demonstration

of wealth.

Page 12: 1 kings 10b riches of solomon

12

20 And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps: there was not the like made in any kingdom. 21 And all king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.

So much gold made silver of little value.

Page 13: 1 kings 10b riches of solomon

13

22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks. 23 So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. 24 And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

Not the wisdom of man, but The

Wisdom of God.

14

25 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and armor, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year. 26

And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem.

Page 15: 1 kings 10b riches of solomon

15

27 And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore trees that are in the vale, for abundance. 28 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price. 29 And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.

He sold chariots to the Hittites and Syrians.

16

Solomon increased his wealth. Silver was nothing accounted of. Such is the nature of worldly wealth, plenty of it makes it the less valuable; much more should the enjoyment of spiritual riches lessen our esteem of all earthly possessions. If gold in abundance makes silver to be despised, shall not wisdom, and grace, and the foretastes of Heaven, which are far better than gold, make gold to be lightly esteemed?

Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.

17

Ecclesiastes 2 4-11 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards: I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees: I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

Page 18: 1 kings 10b riches of solomon

18

I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labor: and this was my portion of all my labor.

Page 19: 1 kings 10b riches of solomon

19

11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do: and, behold, all was vanity (empty; unsatisfactory)

and vexation of spirit (annoying; trouble), and there was no profit under the sun.

Solomon strayed far from God in his middle age.

He was not careful to obey God’s Laws.

His life became empty, vexing, and he was never satisfied in his heart.

Page 20: 1 kings 10b riches of solomon

20

He was rich in worldly possessions and pleasures, but poverty stricken in his heart and mind.

The things of this world will never bring contentment for very long.

Seek God and His Righteousness. He will supply all that we need and fill our hearts

with love, joy, peace, and contentment.

That is abundant life.
