Did you know that the Sea of Galilee is Israel’s largest fresh- water lake, about 53 kilometers around, about 21 kilometers long, 13 kilometers wide, and has a depth of about 43 meters? At 209 meters below sea level, it is the lowest lake in the world after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake. The lake is also known on modern maps as Lake Galilee or Lake Tiberias, in the region of Galilee. It has also been called the Lake of Gennesaret or the Sea of Gennesaret (Luke 5:1) after the name of a small fruit- ful plain on its western side. Its main source is the Jordan River, which flows through it from north to south. Due to its low-lying position in a valley, surrounded by hills, the sea can get sudden violent storms. A main feature of the lake seems to be that it is always changing. It is still famous, just as in New Testament times, for having plenty of fish, and in today’s restaurants, “St. Peter’s Fish” (tilapia) is very popular. If you didn’t already know...now you do! HOLY COMMUNION G od feeds and renews us with the presence of Jesus Christ. In Christ’s body and blood given to us, God forgives us and nourishes us for mission. In response to the Lord’s invitation I come - confessing my sin, trusting that the Lord is truly present, believing that to receive Him is to receive forgiveness - to partake of the Lord’s Supper. People of all ages and faith communities are welcome. Holy Communion is served in a continuous format unless announced otherwise. Participants are asked to fill out a registration card, available in the pews or at both entrances, and place them in the baskets at the entrances, or in the offering plates. Ushers will direct you toward the aisle to come forward to the serving stations. If you desire to commune, extend your hand to the server who will place a wafer in your hand. If you prefer a gluten-free wafer, simply say “gluten-free” to the server. Wine is served from the chalice or individual cups; white grape juice is served from individual cups. Come and hold in your hand and taste on your lips the love we cannot comprehend. www.luthersem.edu/godpause WORSHIP NOTES Children in Worship: We welcome and encourage children to share in worship. Even very young children see faith in action as we pray and sing and commune together. Children’s lessons are available at both entrances, or by checking with any of the ushers. Hearing Assistance: Devices are available at the sound booth. Cell phones and pagers should be turned to silent. Washrooms: located in the narthex and Education Wing, upstairs and down. Elevator: located next to the church office. 1 Kings 19:9-18 Have you ever crawled into a cave? Elijah felt like a total failure. The weight and responsibilities of his task overwhelmed him. Filled with discouragement, he cried out, "I alone am left!" Almost all of us have times of crushing stress and anxiety, darkness and despair. There are times when we just want to crawl into a cave, curl up and lick our wounds. In Jesus and the cross, God is there, present with us in our darkness. You are important to God. You do matter. Be assured, God is with you. Yet, there also comes the time when God speaks a strong word, "Go out." It's not easy. It's a real struggle to move out of our cave. Elijah waited through wind-splitting rocks, earthquake and fire, still no God. Finally, Elijah heard the sheer silence. Bliss. In the silence God whispers, "What are you doing here?" Here's the good news: "God so loved the world." You're not the only one left. Now that is a gospel that frees. You can let go now and let God. It's time to leave the cave, step out into the light and live again. Forgive me, Lord, for forgetting I'm not the only one. Free me from this dark place and bring me into the light of your love, so I might reach out and trust others. Amen. David P. Grant, '80 Interim Pastor, East Union Lutheran Church, Carver, Minn.

GOD’S WORD: Reader Lorna Khan

FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 19:9-18

9 At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 10He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’ 11 He said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 14He answered, ‘I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.’ 15Then the LORD said to him, ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as

king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. 18Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.’ HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22-33

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dis-missed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. 26But when the disciples saw him walk-ing on the lake, they were terrified, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’ 28 Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’ 29He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. 30But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ 32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God.’
