Island Trees Community Tribune Graduates Receive Awards SuPt's Secretary Retires The following awards and scholarships were presented to students of the class of 1977 at the twenty-first annual com mencement held on June 26, at the Island Trees High School. The Board of Education presented five Key Awards and Five Certificate Awards to the top ten students, as follows: KEY AWARDS - David Balton, Dorothy Costa, Francis Molano, Anthony Petracca, Rick Shan- sky; CERTIFICATE AWARDS - Brien Barton, Michael Coyle, Robert Dering, Maureen Kenney, Debra Lehat. The Island Trees PTA Council This year the student council organization presented service awards to Steven Pico and Francis Molano. The Music department presented two awards to students who achieved the highest stan dard of musicianship. The recipients were Brien Barton and Francis Molano. The National Honor Society awarded fine arts awards to Louis Camerlengo and Judith Wirkula. Brien Barton and Rick Shansky were named as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The following presented the Evelyn Boisvert students scored just below Memorial Scholarship and the “ Finalist” and received Letters Scholarship to PTA Council Laura Milstein The Bethpage Rotary Club presented the following: Ted Abbene Memorial Scholarship - Lilliane Turchetto, Hy Weiner Memorial Scholarship - Donna Taranto, Howard A. Palestine Memorial Scholarship-Dominick Terrasi Frank Lurrey Memorial Scholarship - Steven Pico. The Karopczyc-Gallow PTA presented a scholarship to Roy Pedersen. The Michael F. Stokes School Faculty Scholarship was awarded to Joseph Evangelista and Robert Wilpan. RE-5-4636 The following 1977 graduates of the Island Trees High School were not mentioned in the Tribune’s graduation issue: Class Officers - President, Dominick Guy Macchia, Vice- President, Edward Patrick McAuliffe, Secretary, Kathryn O’Brien, Treasurer, Maureen Frances Kenney. To these students and to all the graduates the staff of the Tribune wishes you continued success. Island Trees Soccer Scores By Midge Finck Most of the standings in the girls and boys divisions have been given but the Girls Division and Juvenile Girls Divisions still had play-off Championship games to be played. The Girls Division play-off was between two Island Trees teams.' The Bulldogs coached by Vinnie LoBianco vs. the Lyres coached by Ken Granelli. The score ended up Lyres 2 Bulldogs 1, this was reached after two five minute overtimes and a face-off against each goalie. One team had to be the winner, but the feeling by all after these two teams played was Island Trees has two first place teams. Congratulations to both teams and coaches. The other Championship play off was in the Juvenile Girls Division. The Island Trees Rebels coached by John Lively vs. E,M. Arapahoe. Island Trees came through again and won the Championship game 3-2. Congratulations to all. At his time I want to, thank the Bethpage Tribune on behalf of the Island Trees Soccer Club for their cooperation in printing this column. Biding 25 Years Of Service H I - :§„\ Margaret Staley takes time out from her busy schedule as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools to pose for a picture. Margaret Staley, retiring Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools in Island Trees, has been employed since 1952 when she was hired as secretary to then District Principal, Louis A. Blodgett. She continued in that position until Mr. Blodgett’s retirement. In July 1953 when Harold S. Ferguson joined the staff as High School Principal Mrs. Staley became his “ Girl Friday” and continued in that capacity through his appointment as District Principal, and later as Superintendent in 1963, to his retirement in June of 1968. Since that time, Margaret has worked with seven other superin tendents, including Waif Oglesby who currently holds that office, and she has adapted easily to the change of reins with each one. They all agree that her dedication and expertise have made her an outstanding em ployee, and a pleasure to work with. Margaret, with her husband Ed, moved to Long Island from Queens in 1949 to become one of the “ original” Levitt homeowners. Their two young children were registered at the one room schoolhouse on Hemp stead Turnpike, and were bused to Farmingdale where they at tended school in a rented American Legion Hall until the Farmedge (now Karopczyc) School was built. Son, Edmund, now living in Arizona with his wife and two children is a bank vice president, and daughter, Maureen, is a physical education teacher in the Brentwood school system. The Staleys look forward to a retirement home in Florida - with plenty of time for golf. Margaret’s keen sense of humor and cheerful personality have endeared her to co-workers one and all. She will be sorely missed and no one will take her place. The following awards and scholarships were presented to students of the class of 1977 at the twenty-first annual com­mencement held on June 26, at the Island Trees High School.

Island Trees Soccer Scores
