To be able to answer future needs… in a
secure way
Future proof / Security• IPv6 native• 128-bit PSK Authentication and ciphering CCM at MAC layer• Ability to download firmware over the power line• Ability to accommodate future applications over IPv6• Compliant with IoT (Internet of Things)
Multisourcing for better competitiveness
Interoperability• G3-PLC is an international standard available for free at http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-G.9903• G3-PLC Alliance ensures a large number of solutions served by a community of silicon and meter vendors
Minimum Installation efforts
Minimal maintenance costs
Simplicity• Plug and Play (Stateless Address Self configuration embedded)• Statistics available
To be able to operate with clusters from 2 to
1500 meters
Scalability• Support up to 2000 nodes• Mesh network with route is self-reconstructing when a link is broken without impacting the whole cluster
DSOs Requirements and G3-PLC Answers

Meters communicating directly with the Data Concentrator
The routing algorithm allows the communication with this meter using an intermediate node chosen regarding an optimized metric
A routing node
If the route gets impassable…
… a new route is automatically created

EU Regulation of high-speed narrowband Powerline Communication in the spectrum 150-500 kHz
41
Standardization and Regulation
42
Market access is granted, if products are compliant with the EMC regulation.
Directive 2004/108/EC:
a manufacturer is allowed to assess the EMC of its products
either by compliance with a European Harmonized Standard• EN 50065 in 3-148,5 kHz• EN50561-1 in 1.8-30 MHz (only applicable for in-house PLC)
or by doing an EMC assessment based on own procedures and methods • devolo sold over 27 Million PLC adapters by doing so!• EMC limits in 150-500 kHz are defined as recommendation in IEEE standard.
Product compliance with all applicable directives (e.g. safety etc.)

G3-PLC Field Trial in Hamburg, Germany
Vattenfall Europe Metering GmbH with devolo AG
Goal:
Evaluate the performance of devolo's PLC technology in the access area PLC
Location:
Hamburg, Bramfeld: Typical environment of urban grid
Result: All measurement points were reliably connected. There data rates up to 60 kbps net payload UDP have been
achieved. Project completion was in the spring of 2013.
Next Goal:
Evaluation of G3-PLC behavior in difficult scenarios

Goal:
Evaluation of G3-PLC in the difficult network scenarios
Locations:
Berlin, Märkisches Viertel: a large number of Households Berlin, Hohenschönhausen: High-rise buildings Berlin, Kaulsdorf: Overhead lines at low voltage
Results:
All measurement points were reliably connected, except the ones with overhead lines at low voltage(Overhead line Area: problem with the overvoltage protective device from DDR time)
There data rates up to 60 kbps net payload UDP has been achieved. Project completion was in December 2013.
