Holotype. "TYPE, Hy/1850, A.A.Girault", "Syntomosphyrum [OH]Queensland Museum. Epentastichus flavus,". On the last label all after "QueenslandMuseum." are in a hand similar to MrsGirault's.NOTES: In his unpublished manuscriptGirault places this species inSyntomosphyrum hence his annotation onthe slide label. I was unable to locate thecard-mounted body of the Holotype underany of the possible generic and specificnames. In his unpublished manuscriptGirault says, "The type tag was not reseenbut some annotations upon what remainedof the type were made..." which indicatesthat it was missing at that point in time. The combination Quadrastichodes flavuswas never formalised in the literaturetherefore Epentastichus flavus is not a newcombination. Contrary to what Giraultbelieved, Epentastichus flavus is a valid, available, nominal species and was made soby the 1913 description. His action inproposing the new name Epentastichusflavella for it is therefore invalid. In sayingthis I am assuming that no homonymy isinvolved with the same name by anotherauthor. Girault's literature and hisunpublished manuscript give no indicationthat the name change was prompted byhomonymy.

DATA specifiesfour females. Girault frequently selected ashis types only some of the specimensavailable when describing a taxon. In hisunpublished manuscript he mentions twomales with the four females bred outtogether and his labels on these specimensclearly say "d 4 Types". I therefore regardall of the QM specimens as the remains ofhis Syntypes. The specimens in DPIQappear to have Syntype-status since theyhave data matching the PUBL. DATA forthis species. However, they are notmentioned in his unpublished manuscriptand from this I assume that the DPIQspecimens were not available to him at thetime of the description. The QueenslandMuseum register numbers for the Syntypesof this species are T.8892-8895.

PUBL. DATA: One female, sweeping inforest, November 6, 1913. Ayr,Queensland. Type Hy 1821, QueenslandMuseum, the above specimen on a tag, thehead on a slide (and a tag with the varietypurpurus [= purpureus]). A second femalecaptured at the same time differed in beingdark metallic purple. I name it the varietypurpureus and deposit it with the type ofthis species; a second female of the varietyhad the groove of the scutum only at adistal fourth!QM: 4 cards on separate pins and 2 slides.Three of the cards are labelled "Type" byGirault but his identification label does notspecify which is his Holotype ofEpitetrastichus fulvipostscutellum or whichare his Syntypes of the variety purpureus. Ileave this for the first reviser to sort out.Card 1 - 1 4 minus head and part of leftwings. "Pentastichodes [NOMEN NUDUM][= Epitetrastichus] fulvipostscutellum Gir.,Type [OH]".Card 2 - 1 minus head. "Epitetrastichus fulvipostscutellumGirault, [GH] Ent. Div. Dep. Helabelled his specimens before deciding notto describe the genus Pentastichodes andomitted to change his labels. The spelling purpurus of the variety namewas obviously a printer's error and thename is correctly spelt purpureus a fewlines after the mis-spelling in the originaldescription. On checking Slide 1 with Slide2 and the slide-mounted parts ofEpitetrastichus flavipostscutellum I findthat Girault has mis-labelled Slide 1 asflavipostscutellum instead offulvipostscutellum. The antennae of thesetwo species are quite different and those onSlide 1 closely match those on Slide 2. Ileave it for the first reviser to confirm myfindings.

PUBL. DATA: One female mounted inbalsam, captured from a window at Nelson[ = Gordonvale], N.Q., March 20, 1913.Type [Hy.1828], Queensland Museum, theabove specimen on a slide.QM: Slide (badly cracked and glued toanother slide) - 1 cracked, almost completecoverslip containing the Holotype 9 of 1 ofthe species as per label; 2 empty coverslipfragments. "Hy/1830. QueenslandMuseum. TYPE, Epichrysocharis fusca,Gr., 4. From window, Nelson [=Gordonvale], N.Q., 20.3.1913". On thislabel "1521" is crossed out and "1830"substituted. "Queensland Museum. TYPE,Neomphaloides fusca, Gr.,". This label hasHy/1522 crossed out. On both labels allexcept "Queensland Museum. TYPE" arein a hand similar to Mrs Girault's.

NOTES: The PUBL. DATA with thedescription of Neomphaloides fusca Giraultstate that the Holotype 9 is on a slide withthe Holotype of Epichrysocharis fusca. In aletter to the Queensland Museum datedAugust 31, 1913 Girault says, "The type ofEpichrysocharis [fusca] came, I am sorry tosay, all smashed up (the box was weak) butfortunately both insects on the slide wereuninjured and can be remounted". There isonly 1 specimen remaining on the originalsmashed slide and I suspect it is theHolotype female of Neomphaloides fusca(later Neomphaloidella fusca). The crossedout number Hy.1521 on the first label isthe duplicate Queensland Museum registernumber for Epichrysocharis fusca and thesubstituted number 1830 is the publishedQueensland Museum register number forNeomphaloides fusca Girault. The numberHy.1522 crossed out on the second label isa duplicate Queensland Museum registernumber for Neomphaloides fusca. I wasunable to locate the Holotype 4 ofEpichrysocharis fusca under thiscombination or Quadrastichus fusca(Girault). In his unpublished manuscriptGirault places Neomphaloides fusca andEpichrysocharis fusca as junior subjective

synonyms of Tetrastichodes morum Girault(1913). He also says of Neomphaloidesfusca, "This species was at first describedas an Omphaline but in the samepublication (1913 g, p. 38) and on nearlythe same pages as a Tetrastichine, asNeomphaloides fusca ... The originaldescription as Epichrysocharis fusca iscorrect (that is, as to the insect itself) but itis the second funicle segment which is theshortest ... The description asNeomphaloides fusca is all wrong ..." Atthe end of this section under the headingTetrastichodes morum Girault says, "Thespecies is somewhat variable but evidentlywas poorly described at first whereas itsgeneric position was long a question".Both 1913 papers issued in December ofthat year. The Bull. Wis. nat. Hist. Soc.(N.S.) paper was undoubtedly written firstand as a standard I am accepting it as thereference for this nominal species. Hy.1521is a duplicate Queensland Museum registernumber for the Holotype of this speciesand has been cancelled. Similarly theduplicate number Hy. 1522 forNeomphaloides fusca has also beencancelled.

Type Hy2620, Queensland Museum, the female on atag; head on a slide.QM: Slide - 1 coverslip fragmentcontaining a head (in 3 pieces, antennaeattached to 2).
