The Infant Jesus Homes and Children’s Centres (IJHCC) was established from the very beginning

to reach out to the most vulnerable children in need of protection and care. We marked a

significant new milestone in our history with the opening of the new IJ Village in September 2013,

a complete renovation of the building which housed the former IJ Home at 503 Ang Mo Kio

Street 13. Despite the delay caused by the need to strengthen many parts of the old building

structure, the appointed architectural / engineering consultants and the building contractor

worked tirelessly to resolve the many technical problems encountered during the course of work.

The Occupation Permit was finally given by the authorities in August 2013. Our elderly ladies who

were living in a HDB flat in Woodlands during the renovation period finally returned to settle

down in their new home in September 2013.

The newly refurbished IJ Village has two distinct areas of operations – one building to continue

housing the four elderly ladies while the three-storey convent (former residential home to the

sisters) has been completely converted into a children’s centre to provide residential and day

care learning support for children and youth from our IJ Schools as well as needy children from

the Ang Mo Kio vicinity.

We are truly grateful to all our generous donors and supporters, and to all those who have

worked tirelessly to help us raise funds for this project.

The Provincial introduced several new members into the Management Committee which will

enhance and strengthen the financial and legal obligations of the organisation especially with

respect to its relationship with the Charity Council and government authorities.

I wish to thank all our loyal staff members for the unwavering love and care they have shown to

our beneficiaries throughout the years and their utmost dedication towards the call of the IJ

Mission. Of course we must also place on record our deep appreciation to all our volunteers and

generous donors – their continuing support have been a great source of inspiration and comfort

to IJHCC.

God Bless All,

Francis Yip

Chairman

An intimate Thanksgiving Mass for the return to IJ Village was organised on October 20,

attended by the IJ Sisters and a small group of invited guests.

One of the first major event held at the IJ Village was Kem Kawan Kawan, or more

fondly known as ‘KKK’. First organised in 2007, it brings together disadvantaged

children from neighbouring countries, to learn about each other’s unique culture.

In 2013, KKK was held at IJ Village, from December 2 -12. A concert was held towards

the end of the camp showcasing the participants` efforts as well as the richness of

the various cultural heritage through ethnic songs and dances.

The performances, held on the grounds of the IJ Village, were

well-received by the audiences. Community performances were

also organised at local hospitals like Tan Tock Seng Hospital

and Assisi Hospice.

KKK helped to forge new friendships and strengthened the old.

It also challenged the children and volunteers in the discovery

of their individual gifts and talents.

Towards Christmas, another Mass and reception was

organised and well-attended by guests which included

our donors, sponsors, volunteers and other supporters.

Completed in September 2013, the IJ Village focuses on helping school-going children and youth, who might

otherwise be deprived of the opportunity to make the most of their talents.

Programmes are offered to help them in their development and growth in motivation and self-confidence.

Programmes and situational opportunities which support character formation and the acquisition of values

are used to help the children and youth develop positive behaviour and social responsibility. A choice of

value-added programmes inclusive of Art and Craft, Music and Dance, Drama, Gardening and Sports, are

available. These, apart from offering scope for talent and youthful energy, provide outlets for those whose

gifts are best expressed in ‘doing things’.

IJ Village is also a Residential Home to a small group of ladies who were once received as babies at the Gate

of Hope, and are now as adults provided with a pleasant, supportive environment which allows them to live

out their old age in simple comfort and dignity.

Galilee Centre is a children's learning support centre for children and youths from disadvantaged family

backgrounds, namely in the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood. Established in 1982, Galilee Centre offers a "safe

space" for these children who may come from families facing financial and other difficulties, single parent

households or are victims of family violence. Children from such family backgrounds are not adequately

provided with the nurturing environment or necessary skills to cope with the challenges in life due to

poverty, illiteracy and other difficulties.

At the centre, the children are closely supervised in their homework and provided with academic support

and assistance, which most of them lack from home. A wide range of programmes and activities are offered

to these children to support and nurture their social, physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth.

With such services and care, it is hoped that the children will be able to develop their talents and potentials,

promoting their self-esteem and confidence as well.

Various programmes are offered at the centre for children between 2.5 to 12 years of age.

HEADSTART PROGRAMME

Montessori programme is taught in class with emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and

respect for a child’s natural psychological development.

The Nursery to Pre-school Programme for children from 2-1/2 to 6 years old includes….

Reading / Writing

Language & Maths

Music & Movement

Art and Craft

Outdoor Play

Moral Education

Character Development

Excursions and camps

LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Primary school children from 7 to 12 years are offered the following:

Homework supervision

Academic Support (English, Maths, Mother Tongue Language & Science)

Reading / Writing

Computer skills

Character Development

Music and Movement

Art and Craft

Moral Education

Excursions and camps

Recreation and sports activities

We provide personalized services to the individual child to help him/her gain confidence and strive to

excel in his/her studies. The individualized support the child receives helps him/her to progress at his/her

own pace. A holistic approach is adopted by staff and volunteers to maximize each child’s potential.

Past beneficiaries who are presently studying in secondary schools still return to Galilee Centre on

weekends and participate in tuition or music programmes. This small group of youth are encouraged and

empowered to participate actively in events and programmes especially during the school holidays.

Opportunities may be created for these youth to be leaders and mentors as they are involved in

planning, organizing and executing events and activities for the younger cohort.

Located in the heart of Clementi, the Infant Jesus Centre (IJ Centre) provides children from

disadvantaged and challenged backgrounds with a nurturing, caring, secure and educative

environment where life skills are taught and character building emphasized. It aims to serve children

from disadvantaged background, and in facilitating, supporting and nurturing the Physical, Social,

Intellectual, Emotional and Spiritual growth of each child.

Set within a ‘homely’ environment, we provide Residential Care and ‘Out-of-School Hours’

Programmes for the children at-risk.

RESIDENTIAL CARE PROGRAMME

Children, between the ages of 2 and 12 years, who are from challenged family backgrounds are

accepted if they meet the eligibility criteria of low income, and/or are in situations of need for care

and protection.

With a conducive ‘home’ environment, these children receive the much-needed care, attention and

support while they learn to build their confidence as well as internalize positive values and life skills.

We also provide the children with programmes that promote their social and emotional well-being

and develop their self-help skills.

Services provided in the home include school work supervision, social and life skills training, small

group care and counselling as well as the provision of self-development and sporting/recreational

activities. Where applicable, we also assist the families by referring them to specialized care

programmes/services.

OASIS OUT-OF-SCHOOL PROGRAMME

The Oasis programme provides afterschool care and academic support for the students from low

income families, namely those attending Clementi Primary School. Support is also given to children

from families, where parent or guardian may be single, of lower educational level, suffering from

physical or mental disabilities, or facing emotional and social problems.

Besides providing supervision and mentoring, a range of activities are offered to develop and enrich

these students during the school holidays.

Oasis provides a safe environment where children can learn and play despite coming from

disadvantaged family environment. It also helps to support the students socially, emotionally and

academically during the important phase of their growth and development. Oasis welcomes these

children so that they will not be deprived of an opportunity to learn.
