ABOUT STANZE

It is said that in 1992 when the BBC Radio 3 broadcasted Stanze in the harp version, the phones of the radio station were buzzing with callers asking for the name of the composer. Since then the fame of Stanze and of Ludovico Einaudi has continued to grow.

This is not surprising if we consider the appeal and communicative spirit of these pieces. Even today they represent a model for the post-classic genre, still loved and imitated, which Einaudi - uncontested maestro - was able to imprint with an all Italian original and refined tenor.

After 25 years from the first recording, I present Stanze, here for the first time, in the original piano version composed by Einaudi himself. The score, published by Ricordi in 1992, is made up of 14 numbers: two less than the 16 of the harp recording. Calmo and Attesa are in fact missing. All the other ones are almost the same, just a few changes due to the dissimilar techniques of the two instruments. Only one, Moto perpetuo, in the piano version is so completely dif-ferent and much longer (12 pages versus 4 of the harp), as to be considered a new one.

Stanze was the ancient name of the strofe in the Canzone, the first Italian poetic form. Stanza means room. Dante Alighieri defined the poetic meaning of stanza as “dimora capace e ricettacolo di tutta l’arte” [a capacious storehouse or receptacle for the art in its entirety], suggesting the place, real or unreal, where the artist isolates himself to think, to collect strength and find the words (or notes) to create.

Actually we all have a stanza where we easily find our inner self. It can be a place in our home where, alas at the end of the day, we retire to listen to some music or read a book; it could be our car cabin, or a train compartment, where, while the landscape flies past, we think back on the past, dream of our future: it can even be just a space in our head, a place not in a place, where we stand alone in front of ourselves.

Even though, as the composer affirms, there is not a general idea that unifes the pieces of this album, they are all conceived in the same stanza, in that unique place which offers to the artist the peace of loneliness and meditation.

Einaudi’s quote “A tutti quelli che continuano a tenere il fuoco acceso” [to all those who continue to keep the fire burning] as the dedication of the work, sug-gests the idea of something that must not be lost: as delicate as it is important.

If I should sum up in one word the whole essence of Stanze I would say fragil-ity. Pieces as Calore, Onda, Cadenza or Ritorno, frail blades of grass, newly blossomed flowers, are composed by a handful of notes. But these are for me the most fascinating and immediate. Topical is in fact the concept of vulnerability, in a world marked by an ever more compromised ecological, socio-political and human balance.

These pieces lead us to open up and live the stanze of our personal fragilities, to feel and therefore understand the vulnerability of the world in which we live.

A PROPOSITO DI STANZE

Si narra che quando nel 1992 il Terzo Canale Radio della BBC mandò in onda Stanze nella versione per arpa, le linee telefoniche dell’emittente inglese furono prese d’assalto dai radioascoltatori, che chiedevano chi ne fosse l’autore. Da allora la fama di Stanze e di Ludovico Einaudi, non ha mai smesso di crescere.

Ciò non sorprende se si considera il fascino e la comunicativa di questi brani. Ancora oggi rappresentano un modello per quel genere di musica post-classica, tuttora molto amato e imitato, al quale Einaudi - maestro indiscusso - ha saputo imprimere un’impronta di originalità e raffinatezza tutta italiana.

A 25 anni dalla prima incisione, presento Stanze, qui per la prima volta, nella versione originale per pianoforte, approntata dallo stesso Einaudi. Lo spartito, pubblicato da Ricordi nel 1992, consta di 14 numeri: due in meno rispetto ai 16 dell’incisione per arpa. Mancano infatti Calmo e Attesa. Tutti gli altri brani sono pressoché identici, se non per piccole varianti dovute alle differenti tec-niche dei due strumenti. Soltanto uno, Moto perpetuo, nella versione per piano-forte è radicalmente diverso e assai più lungo (12 pagine, contro le 4 per arpa), tanto da poter essere considerato del tutto nuovo.

Stanze: così si chiamavano anticamente le strofe della Canzone, la prima forma poetica italiana. Stanza significa room. Dante Alighieri definì il signifi-cato poetico di stanza come "dimora capace e ricettacolo di tutta l'arte", allu-dendo ad un luogo, reale o ideale, dove l’artista si isola per pensare, raccogliere le forze, trovare le parole (o le note) per creare.

In realtà tutti abbiamo una stanza in cui ritroviamo più facilmente noi stessi. Può essere un ambiente della propria casa dove, magari a fine giornata, ci ritiri-amo ad ascoltare un po’ di musica o a leggere un libro; può essere l’abitacolo della propria auto, o lo scomparto di un treno, dove, mentre il paesaggio sfila fuori dal finestrino, ripensiamo al passato, immaginiamo il futuro; può essere nient’altro che uno spazio mentale, un luogo-non luogo, dove essere soli di fronte a sé stessi.

Se, come afferma l’autore, non esiste un’idea unitaria che leghi i brani di questo album, essi sono stati tutti concepiti nella stessa stanza, in quel luogo unico che offre all’artista il conforto della solitudine e della meditazione.

La frase scelta da Einaudi - “A tutti quelli che continuano a tenere il fuoco acceso” – quale dedica della composizione, suggerisce l’idea di qualcosa che non deve andare perduto: tanto delicato, quanto importante. Se dovessi racchiudere in una parola l’essenza di Stanze, direi fragilità. Brani come Calore, Onda, Cadenza o Ritorno, esilissimi fili d’erba, fiori appena sbocciati, sono composti da una manciata di note. Ma sono questi a mio avviso i numeri più affascinanti ed attuali. Attualissimo infatti è il concetto di fragilità, in un mondo segnato da un equilibrio - ecologico, socio-politico e umano in genere - sempre più compro-messo.

Questi brani ci inducono ad aprirci e ad abitare le stanze delle fragilità per-sonali, e a sentire, e dunque a capire, la fragilità del mondo in cui viviamo.

The Italian pianist Olivia Belli has always been interested in contemporary music and all kinds of relationship between different arts. She and her husband founded the festival “Perpianosolo Meeting” where they could enjoy many pro-jects: the recording (for Wergo) of the Makrokosmos by George Crumb together with famous masterpieces of the classic repertoire; shows in collaboration with dancers, actors, photographers, video makers, painters… shows where the piano had the main role.

She got close to the world of the sountracks when she met the composer Fabio Vacchi, well-known for having scored some of Ermanno Olmi’s and Patrice Chéreau’s films. Olivia premiered his piano work “Echi d’Ombre” recorded for the RAI (the national broadcast).

She has just released her album “My piano dolce vita”: a journey across some of the best soundtracks of outstanding movies, all written by Italian or Italian-American composers among which Ennio Morricone, Ludovico Einaudi, Marco Beltrami, Dario Marianelli, Michael Giacchino, Nicola Piovani, Nino Rota etc. all played on the piano.

And now she premieres the original piano version of Stanze by Ludovico Einaudi.

Olivia Belli è da sempre interessata alla musica contemporanea e all’abbinamento tra forme artistiche diverse. Ha fondato il Festival “Perpiano-solo Meeting” dove, insieme a suo marito, ha realizzato numerosi spettacoli in collaborazione con ballerini, fotografi, video-maker, pittori, in cui il pianoforte manteneva il ruolo principale. Ha inoltre registrato per Wergo i Makrokosmos di George Crumb, abbinati a capolavori del repertorio classico.

Si avvicina al mondo delle colonne sonore quando incontra il compositore Fabio Vacchi, noto per le musiche di alcuni film di Ermanno Olmi e Patrice Chéreau. Di Fabio Vacchi esegue la premiere di “Echi d’ombre”, brano registrato per la RAI.

Recentemente è uscito il suo album “My piano dolce vita”: un viaggio attra-verso alcune delle più belle colonne sonore scritte da compositori italiani o italo-americani, tra cui Ennio Morricone, Ludovico Einaudi, Marco Beltrami, Dario Marianelli, Michael Giacchino, Henry Mancini, Nicola Piovani, Nino Rota...

Olivia presenta ora in prima assoluta la registrazione della versione originale per pianoforte dell’album Stanze di Ludovico Einaudi.
