Demolition causes heartache

NOW OPEN

By Glenise DreaverRobin Mitchell can look at the gap at 10 Wynen

Street where their family sports shop stood for fifty years and sum up the last three months in two words.

“Interesting and traumatic.” The earthquakes brought forward their move from

the old building to a new site near the Post Office. “It was the right thing to do, for our staff and customers - and the community,” he says.

It was not the shift of Mitchell Sports’ vast amount of specialised stock that proved traumatic. It took one weekend, with the support of family, staff and the Marlborough Boys’ Hockey representative team.

But the demolition has brought huge unexpected stress and financial burden to the family.

The decision was made because the building was not suitable for strengthening. “It would have cost $500,000 and still been an old building,” Robin said.

Continued from page 1It came through the 6.7 quakes well,

but in a 7.5 to 8, with vertical uplift as in Christchurch, they would be in trouble.

However, a six figure gap between the estimate and the final demolition has been compounded by issues with a shared wall where work dated back to 1908.

This has happened in a market with competition at the top from the Internet and from “big box” stores at the bottom.

“That leaves a pretty skinny middle.”Giving up is not an option he says of the

business that is now, with his son Michael involved, a third generation one. He knows however, that in many family busi-nesses, the financial burden and threats to health would have seen others walk away.

The store’s reputation is so good, especially in Robin’s specialty area of footwear, that each year they have shoes running in the London, New York,

Boston, Paris and Australian marathons. “Mainly people with a Blenheim con-nection.”

Michael may develop an internet focus, but that is both time consuming and expensive.

What does rankle is that there is no help from any source. “The Government may come in later, but right now there is nothing. I will be visiting (MP) Colin King to talk to him about it.”

Demolition causes heartache

By Adam PoulopoulosStuart Smith’s desire to cham-

pion Kaikoura’s primary indus-tries in Parliament is behind his decision to challenge for the seat in the next election.

Mr Smith announced he hopes to be National’s candidate for the Kaikoura electorate on Wednesday.

The seat has been filled by National MP Colin King since 2005.

Mr Smith, a fourth-generation South Island farmer, has been building his campaign for nearly two years.

The former New Zealand Winegrowers Chairman said he was buoyed by the support he has received.

“I’ve been encouraged by people of great standing in the community from the bottom to the top of the electorate.”

Mr Smith said there were opportunities for growth in Kai-koura’s vital primary industries sector.

He has pushed for a local ship-ping service to call at Picton, with the hope it reduces costs for goods shipped to Nelson by groups like grape-growers and

sawmillers. He also said moving Devon-

port naval base to Picton would not only complement Kaik-oura’s Woodbourne air force base, but also provide housing land for Auckland.

Mr Smith’s experience in the region is varied.

He has been and continues to be involved in groups like Save our Services and the Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme.

“Irrigation is a big opportunity for the region,” she said.

Mr Smith was inducted as

a wine Industry fellow two months ago.

He said all of these these expe-riences held him in good stead.

“I believe Kaikoura needs a strong advocate for the elector-ate and I have a background in advocating.”

In repsonse, Mr King said he was looking to continue in the seat.

“With any public office one has to reapply every three years, so having a challenger focuses the attention.

“I’m very proud of my achieve-

ments and I have the passion and enthusiasm to continue.

“One’s always aiming to do better, but I’m very proud of my record.”

The election is set to take place late next year.

The Kaikoura electorate stretches down the east coast of the South Island, from Cook Strait to the Ashley River.

Nominations for the National party candidate are now open and closes on the 15th of No-vember.

Smith challenges King

Kaikoura MP Colin King will be challenged by Stuart Smith at the next election.

The second of two men con-victed over the beating to death of 23 fur seals on the Kaikoura coast has been sentenced to eight months’ home detention and 200 hours’ community service.

Jemaal Large, 38, had pleaded not guilty but after a court hear-ing was last month convicted in Blenheim District Court on two charges of wilful ill-treatment of animals relating to 13 female and two bull seals.

He was found not guilty on a third charge relating to the deaths of eight seal pups.

The seals were beaten to death with galvanised steel pipe at the Ohau Point seal colony in late 2010.

The other man involved in the attack, Jason Godsiff was convicted in 2011 after pleading

guilty to a charge of wilful ill-treatment of animals.

He was initially sentenced to two years’ imprisonment but this was reduced on appeal to eight months’ home detention.

Department of Conservation spokesperson Dave Hayes said he was pleased the two men had been held to account for their actions with significant legal consequences.

“This was a callous attack that was particularly shocking for the large number of seals involved,” Mr Hayes said.

“It drew widespread public con-demnation and we are grateful for the public support we received.

“We thank the police and Crown Prosecutor for their work in ensuring those who committed the attack were prosecuted and convicted.

“We take very seriously attacks on seals and other legally-protect-ed marine mammals and look to prosecute anyone harming them.”

Under recent changes to the

Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 anyone harming or killing seals could face up to two years’ imprisonment or a $250,000 fine or both.

“Thankfully most people re-spect seals and value being able to see them on our coasts,” said Mr Hayes.

“Kaikoura is internationally-renowned for its marine wildlife tourism with seal viewing one of its significant drawcards.”

More than 40,000 visitors a year are attracted to seeing seal pups playing in the Ohau Stream waterfall near the Ohau Point seal colony, he said.

“We greatly appreciate the help of Ohau Seal volunteers who educate visitors about seals and keep an eye on the seals in that area.”

Mayor fights back tearsBy Glenise Dreaver

Visibly emotional, Mayor Alistair Sowman yesterday thanked Marlborough District Councillor Jenny Andrews as she ended her nine years in the role of deputy Mayor.

At the first meeting of the new Marlborough District Council in the coun-cil chambers, Mr Sowman announced that Clr Terry Sloan would be his deputy.

Mr Sowman presented Clr Andrews with flowers, saying that during their three terms, she had performed admi-rably. “I know we had been called the ‘dream team’,” he said, adding that the relationship had lasted longer than some marriages.

He said that Clr Andrews had worried about getting emotional at that moment. “I told her ‘Be strong’”

But, he said, it was he who had given way to emotion.

Mr Sowman said he had been looking at the issue of leadership succession and

Jenny was clear that she would not stand for the mayoralty.

“And she has indicated this may be her last term.”

They had agreed it was appropriate that someone younger be appointed.

He said he was looking for loyalty, support and positivity and Clr Sloan had shown those attributes. Mr Sowman used his new legal powers to change the com-mittee structures, removing community and financial planning from the Assets and Services Committee chaired by Clr Sloan.

Clr John Leggett chairs the newly-created Community and Finance Com-mittee, with Jamie Arbuckle as deputy. The Regional Planning And Development Committee will be chaired by Clr Trevor Hook.

Clr Peter Jerram is to chair the Environ-ment Committee and Clr David Oddie has been appointed as chair of the Resource Hearing Committee.

Former deputy mayor Jenny andrews presented with a bouquet by an emotional mayor sowman.

Two of Marlborough’s most popular events will fall on the same night, but organisers have made sure patrons can easily go to both.

A bus will be provided on Saturday, Novem-ber 9 at 8pm to take guests from the Nelmac Marlborough Garden Party to the Marlborough Wine Show dinner.

Event Co-ordinators Monique Fouwler and Belinda Jackson said they aimed to work together to allow patrons to attend both events.

ASB award students

AsB staff chris Mitchell and Hillary Hicks presented Marlborough Girls’ college students Gabby Mark, Elizah Hudson, Katie Pagan and sarah Laybourn with 2013 AsB community Bursary Awards on Wednesday.

Photo by Celeste LodewykOn Wednesday four Marlborough Girls’ College

received recognition for their community service by being awarded with 2013 ASB Community Bursary Awards.

Year 13 students Gabby Mark, Elizah Hudson, Katie Pagan and Sarah Laybourn were treated to a lunch by Blenheim branch manager Chris Mitchell and staff member Hillary Hicks before being pre-sented with a certificate, ASB flash drive key ring and a $150 voucher.

“The ASB Community Bursary Awards are in their 53rd year and for the last three years have been nationwide. The students that received the awards have been nominated by Marlborough Girls College due to their valuable contributions to the local community.

“They don’t shy away from volunteering to help out when school is over for the day or when they are needed on the weekend,” Chris said.

MGC deputy principal Jo Chamberlain said the students were very deserving of their awards.

“These girls are givers, doers and great leaders and I hope they continue to do well in their future endeavours,” she said.

By Kristy MartinAfter 18 months of renovation work, the new-look

Blenheim Farmers store celebrated its grand opening yesterday.

A breakfast was put on in-store for all the Farmers staff, builders, contractors and tradespeople involved in transforming the Market St department store into the “world class retail outlet” it is today.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman cut the cake and the ribbon to signal the official opening, which will be followed by a storewide sale throughout the long weekend.

He said Farmers employed so many people that Blenheim would not be the same without it.

Farmers regional manager for the South Island Brett Shea described the renovations as a “positive and forward thinking” move, particularly in today’s economic climate.

Before construction began, in May 2012, there were two separate stores with a mall running through the middle and a notoriously leaky roof.

Store manager Karen Stevenson said the staff had put up with a lot during the refurbishment.

“It has been a long journey for this magnificent store to get here today,” she said.

“The staff have remained very positive through-out.”

Michael Hill Jeweller is moving into a shiny new store - and the shift is a matter of days away.

They will move down the street to a bigger, refurbished corner store at 43 Market St in the next two weeks.

The new premises will host an opening event and sale to celebrate.

The move comes after a decade at number 80.

Trying to balance sales with pack-

ing, store manager Gareth Jenkins said several factors had contributed to the move.

“It’s perfect timing, with Christ-mas around the corner, and sum-mer’s always the busiest time of year.

“Retail figures show business in Blenheim is picking up across the board...we’re definitely getting busier after a tough last few years.”

Fri 25/10/13. If the out of date WOF and / or REG is out of date for a period of time longer than 28 days when found by authorised enforcement agents those supervisors have no authority to exercise a waiver on the tickets issued at the time the work was completed and the vehicle after such work, parked on the road. It would seem to be unfortunate that the repairer was not also an authorised agent to also issue WOF although it is accepted that a recheck has to be carried out by the agent Initially failing the vehicle. While many folk are going through difficult economic times at present, if one can not afford to keep the vehicle in a state compliant with WOF & REG requirements one can not afford to run it no matter how harsh that sounds. Q What is your favourite food?

Q What makes you smile?

My wife and daughters ( well most of the time...) Seeing people happy and positive. Also people achieving the goals they have set them-selves.

Q What’s your pet hate?

Negative people, or people who say why it can’t be done rather than how can we do this?

Q Your favoured holiday destination?

Wanaka, Central Otago in summer.

Q What’s your favourite music?

Wide range from ACDC to Katy Perry, but especially like music from the 80’s .

Q What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you?

Am totally afraid of heights and hate flying.

Q What’s next on your wish list?

To get my 1969 Valiant Regal that has sat in the shed for the last 8 years running so I can sell it!!!

Q A saying you like to live by?

Look forward not back. We can’t change what happened yesterday but we are in charge of what will happen tomorrow.

Any fresh seafood. Espe-cially paua and raw bluff oysters.

Nelson Mandela, Greg Mur-phy, Elle McPherson and Richie McCaw to keep my wife happy.

Who would you invite to dinner?

Blenheim Family Planning nurse Rachel Chapman-Munro (left) has been teaching people how to put on condoms for 32 years. She is now leaving the practice and will be replaced by Rachell Webb (right).

By Kristy MartinNot many people can say they’ve

had to dress up as a giant condom, but for sexual health nurse Rachel Chapman-Munro it was a career highlight.

Ms Chapman-Munro this week completed her final shift at Blen-heim’s Family Planning Clinic after 32 years and was reminiscing about some of the more unusual aspects of her job.

She is an expert at putting on condoms, as she has had to dem-onstrate the process to thousands of teenagers and adults, and she has also performed over 300 cervical

smears a year since co-piloting the national screening programme in Marlborough in 1989.

Oh, and of course there was the famous condom costume.

“I dressed as a human condom at the Wine and Food Festival in 35 degree heat and I had to walk up to people and say ‘Do you know what I am?’,” Ms Chapman-Munro laughs.

“You do have to have a certain quirky sense of humour in this job.”

She has worked as a nurse for 41 years, since the tender age of 17, and was one of the original nurses

at Family Planning.“In those days we were more like

handmaidens to the male doctors,” she recalls.

Ms Chapman-Munro is now re-locating to Nelson for her husband Wayne’s work.

“It’s very sad, as it has been my passion.”

Her replacement is Rachell Webb, a Blenheim local with a nursing career of 10 years.

Ms Webb admits it is rather “daunting” stepping into the role of her predecessor.

“But at least people don’t have to learn a different name,” she joked.

Showcasing the best of the ‘50’s, ‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’sOmaka Classic Cars

Open daily from 10am – 4pm. $10 entry, kids go free!*

Aerodrome Road, Omaka. Phone 577 9419. (*up to two kids free (under 13) with every paying adult)

Over 50 cars on display at any one time, from a collection of 120 plus motorbikes and other memorabilia.

By Belinda JacksonWhen it comes to classic cars, there’s no

one in Marlborough more on the case than Jeff Grant.

Jeff looks after all the cars that form the Omaka Classic Car collection and that’s pretty much a full time job.

Jeff starts about 8am polishing both the cars and the venue ready for days’ visitors when the display opens to the public at 10am.

Jeff’s first car was a 1958 Austin A35, which was followed by a 1964 Mini.

Then, while all his mates were cruising around in six-cylinder MKI Zephyrs and Vauxhalls, Jeff bought a 1958 Renault Dauphine – a tiny car by comparison but according to Jeff, it kept up well!

Jeff’s next car, a 1964 MG 1100 was sold to pay for his wedding to Jennifer and they then bought a 1952 Morris Minor.

Soon after, a larger car was needed to accommodate the pram and various other child-paraphernalia – this came in the form of a 1957 Humber 80 and then a 1964 Nissan Cedric – the first Japanese car Jeff owned.

The couple moved to Blenheim in 1979 before crossing over to Wellington a couple of years later.

Jennifer managed to total the Cedric as its vicious brakes locked up on the wet roads and planted the car firmly into the back of an Austin Princess.

It didn’t end too badly though as they received $500 from the insurance company and then managed to sell the car for another $500 at auction!

A 1978 Mazda 323 was the next car pur-chase along with driving a works vehicle – a 1982 Nissan Bluebird.

When Jeff and Jennifer settled back into Blenheim, Jeff was heavily into jet-boating so needed a vehicle to tow the boat.

A 1964 long wheel-base Land Rover was just the thing until traded in for a 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser.

At this time, Jennifer opened ‘Little Angels Boutique’ on the site where Ken Ham’s music store is now and Jeff went to work for Talleys.

Jeff has fond memories of a Holden FX from Jennifer’s father’s farm, which they

still own. He rescued it from the farm and started

restoring it in 2000 – although the panel beater had it for five years so it wasn’t back on the road until 2007!

Another car Jeff remembers well is the 1979 Yugo – a Yugoslavian car that he bought for $250 and sold for $250 sometime later!

In 1997 Jeff and Jennifer invested in a 1980 Jaguar Series III from the UK.

Bought on Autotrader ‘sight unseen’ Jeff was more than a little disappointed at the amount of rust that it had.

“It looked a whole lot better than it was!”

He remembers. While getting a crack in the windscreen re-

paired, they decided to bite the bullet and get the rust fixed – needless to say they received a much larger bill than was anticipated!

Jeff and Jennifer’s current range of cars still include the Series III Jaguar and the Holden FX, along with a 1982 VN Holden Commodore, a Renault Dauphine and a Renault Fuego (quite THE car when launched in the 1980’s!) and another Jaguar, this time a 1987 XJ40.

Jeff happily shares his love and understand-ing of classic cars with visitors to Omaka

Classic Cars. He clearly remembers delighting in getting

all the cars out from their various storage spots around Blenheim and bringing them together to form the display.

He enjoys meeting great people and loves to read the comments they write in the visitor’s book.

If you’d like to know more about Omaka Classic Cars or perhaps even become a volunteer, you can call Jeff on 577 9419.

By Kristy Martin The Linkwater School will get an extra

teacher, build a new storeroom and be able to lease laptop computers for its classrooms after raising $18,000 at the weekend’s Fine Art Auction and Fun Day.

Fun Day organiser Barbara Faulls said $12,700 was raised during Sunday’s event, which was the school’s major fundraiser for the year.

Combine this with the $20,700 generated by Saturday night’s Fine Art Auction and it was a major cash injection for the school.

“Once you deduct the costs of the Fun Day and the artists’ commissions, we will probably clear about $18,000 which is what we were hoping to achieve,” Ms Faulls said.

“There’s a very positive buzz at the school at the moment.”

A major drawcard for the Fun Day was a performance by popular band Little Oceans, who are all former students.

“We were very lucky to have Little Oceans come and play for us,” Ms Faulls said.

An estimated 500-plus people attended the Fun Day, with visitors coming from Picton, Blenheim, Nelson and even Christchurch.

“It was quite windy so we were a bit concerned that would affect the crowds but it turned out to be a fantastic time.”

Groups such as the Havelock Lions and Rural Women had also supported the day.

“It was a real community effort,” said Ms Faulls.

As of today it is now man-datory for children to be cor-rectly secured in an approved carseat restraint until their seventh birthday.

The change in law sees the age raised from five to seven, news which has been welcomed by Plunket.

“Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers to New Zea-land children. We have one of the highest child road fatality rates in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. “Around five children are killed or injured every week on this country’s roads. Today’s law change is a positive step towards reducing this number – it means that five and six year olds will be better protected,” said Plunket’s national child safety advisor Sue Campbell.

“The simple truth is that car seats and boosters seats save

lives.“Adult seatbelts are de-

signed for adults – they don’t fit children properly until they are at least 148cm tall (4’10”).

“Without a booster seat, an adult seatbelt sits too high on a child. The lap part of

the belt rides up over their tummy and the sash part lies across the neck. In a crash this can result in serious head and spinal cord injuries and horrific injuries to the abdomen including ruptured livers and spleens.

“What booster seats do is raise children up and position them so that they get the full safety benefit of the adult seatbelt”.

“Plunket and other agencies will continue to promote the use of booster seats well beyond the 7th birthday but these latest changes are a positive step towards keeping older kids safer in vehicles.”

The new law will be en-forced by NZ Transport Agency and drivers who don’t comply could face an infringement fee of $150 or a fine anywhere up to $1000.

By Adam PoulopoulosDHL Saloon Speedweek is

still over a month away, but for Blenheim’s Paddy North, preparation and workplace banter has already begun.

Usually found behind the wheel of a 700 horsepower super saloon, 39-year-old North has powered down to a regular saloon to compete in a competi-tion that has as much of a focus on endurance as speed.

Speedweek begins on Friday December 6 at Eastern States in Blenheim.

The circuit moves up and down the South Island as 23 drivers from around the coun-try meet seven times in nine days.

The final race is in Ashburton on Saturday, December 14.

North’s car, a 400 horsepower saloon based on a late-model Ford Mustang, is a far cry from his usual vehicle.

The owner of several local businesses, he says the change has not been lost on his col-leagues.

“I’m usually a Chevy driver

so I’ll get a bit of flak for that. “I’ve already had some stick

from workmates.”Each meet consists of two

heats, two-car saloon shootouts and the main race.

All up, drivers can expect to complete about seventy laps in about four hours at speeds of around 120km/h.

With this in mind, North has started planning how to maintain his vehicle during the meet.

“It’s about trying to win the series, not one race.

“I wouldn’t say I’ll be holding back, but it’s also important not to go too hard and crash.”

He says his personal condi-tioning, and the energy levels of his ten-strong crew, are also important to consider.

“There’s a lot to it. There’s my fitness and mental preparation, which involves my nutrition and taking lots of fluids.

“Then there’s the logistics and the planning, so we can make sure everyone gets a rest.

“It’s about putting all that together.”

Bruises, big hits and bigger scores were the order of the long weekend at last weekend’s Derby Royale national roller derby tournament at Palmerston North.

Three Blenheim Boomtown Brawlettes skaters attended, repre-senting the Hawke’s Bay at the very physical two day tournament.

Jenner ‘Krowbar’ Halcrow, chair-person of the Boomtown Brawlettes, described the tournament as, “ex-hausting, but a barrel of fun”.

“It was a great learning experience. “I definitely want to be involved

again next year, hopefully with our own team, the Brawlettes.”

The Pirate City Rollers All Scars and ARDL, Auckland Roller Derby League, both Auckland teams, bat-tled it out in the final for the Winners Cup, the All Scars pulling ahead early in the first half and winning

decisively 279-120.In third place was Richter City,

Wellington, beating the hosts Swamp City of Palmerston North, 99-42.

Local referee and Black Skate, Matt ‘Mow Down’ Brown also got game time in a black v white exhibition game.

“It was absolute madness, bodies flying everywhere!

“The girls make it look so graceful.“When the guys have a go, we

may get a bit carried away with the blocking.

“I had a blast though, everyone should give it a crack!”

The black team took the win over white 154-145.

For more information on roller derby, or if you want to play, contact the Brawlettes on their facebook page.

Kiwi plays in nBaAt the time of writing, Steven

Adams was making his competi-tive debut for the Oklahoma City Thunder as another NBA season tipped off in the US.

Rotorua-born and educated in Wellington, 20-year-old Adams suited up on the Thunder bench as they opened their season away at the Utah Jazz.

In June, Adams became the first Kiwi taken in the first round of the draft at a glitzy ceremony.

After a positive pre-season, it seems Adams has secured a perma-nent spot in the Thunder rotation.

On Wednesday, the Indiana Pac-ers and Miami Heat began with victories, while the Lakers beat the Clippers 116-103 in the Los Angeles Derby

By Adam PoulopoulosTasman’s championship-winning run has led

to several representative call-ups, but one senior member is facing an unexpected summer at home.

Hooker Quentin MacDonald unexpectedly missed out on selection for the New Zealand Maori squad, and was also released from his super 15 contract by the Auckland Blues.

The 25-year-old Marlborough Boy’s College old boy said he was looking forward to some home comforts.

“I’m excited to get back home to Blenheim, maybe play some touch.

“I’ll definitely be back for Tasman next year.” MacDonald had been in contact with overseas

teams with a view to playing in the New Zealand off-season, although nothing had been finalised.

He said the snubs were just a part of rugby. “I was pretty happy with our season and how

I played. “I probably played the best I ever have but it’s

funny how it works out sometimes.“It’s a little setback but I’m still relatively young,

especially for the position.” He said he was delighted to see other players

make the step up.

Captain Shane Christie, lock Joe Wheeler and loose forward Liam Squire all made the NZ Maori touring party, while Squire, first-five Marty Banks and others will all make their first foray into super rugby next season.

Tasman coach Kieran Keane said MacDonald had improved mentally, physically and as a leader.

“He’s had an outstanding year, and made some really big shifts.

“He’s performed and led the team on and off the field and I was terribly disappointed he wasn’t picked up.

“All you can do is play to the best of your ability and I think he did that.”

He said with an unprecedented group of Makos players in super rugby, there was a chance for Tasman to push on in the premiership.

“We’ve set new goals, and the whole union needs to realise there’s an op-portunity here to continue getting stronger.

“We hope Tasman can become a place you can kickstart your career.”

HoCKEy tEaMs winThe New Zealand men’s and

women’s hockey teams began with victories on Wednesday in the Oce-ania Cup at Stratford in Taranaki.

The women beat Australia 3-2 in a thrilling game after the men demolished Papua New Guinea 18-0 earlier in the day.

The two were back in action last night. The tournament fetaures mens’ and womens’ teams from New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Samoa.
