The PMI Leadership Institute Meeting and Global Congress
The PMI Leadership Institute Meeting and Global Congress were held consecutively in Vancouver, Canada in October of 2012.
PMI Houston sent eleven board members and subcommittee members to the Leadership Institute Meeting to increase their
skills on communications, conference management, marketing, membership retention, and sponsorship. Beyond having over
47 countries represented, 859 volunteer leaders thirsty for new knowledge, and 183 chapters present, the LIM represented
different perspectives on how to run a successful chapter.
The conference technology was top notch as PDU’s were submitted electronically after scanning attendee’s nametags at the
entrance to each program. The phone app, which was free to download, revealed a directory of attendees and the potential to
email other attendees to obtain their full contact information. Registration for the Global Congress breakout sessions was also
mandatory in order to track PDU’s and the demand for speakers. Breakout sessions scheduling could be altered onsite through
a bank of computers. The quality of the conferences exemplified PMI’s commitment in educating its members on the
importance of project management, worldwide.
One of PMI’s missions is to educate firms about the value of Project Management. Although some organizations find it hard to
measure the value of Project Management, all speakers touched on topics that were important to adding value to an
organization. Below are some of the top topics that were touched on at this event.
1) What are your leadership challenges? We all know the challenges Rudy Giuliani faced after 9/11, but he focused on
one thing, survivors, not on the body count or on the blame game. He kept everybody focused and working together.
Ed Tate proved how most leadership challenges are with soft skills by writing down all the issues attendees yelled out in
the session (Emotional Intelligence, Culture Change, Virtual Teams, Politics, and Enthusiasm). Ed Tate will be speaking
at the Houston Conference in June.
2) “All project problems are people problems” from Samad Aidane speaking on Neuroscience of emotions. Samad looks
at a project as a social experience which helps in understanding why we make the decisions we do. There are a number
of emotional triggers that lead us into or away from danger. Sustaining positive emotions and your resiliency to
negative triggers are great things to know about your team when running through the stress of a project.
3) Dub McNamara stated four reasons why it is tough to get project approval. Usually the scope is poorly defined or too
broad. Without a clear definition of direction, how do you know you are going the right way? Here are some of the
heavy hitting topics from his session: The goals of the project are not aligned with the goals of the organization. The
benefits of the project are not clearly and credibly defined. The project presentation was not effectively presented and
sold. The most important statement was to always treat your proposal like a project.
In June the PMI Houston Conference & Expo also has a great line up of subject matter
experts. The Leadership Institute Meeting and Global Congress will be held in New
Orleans in October this year.

PMI Houston Corporate Outreach - May 2013
Hello from PMI Houston Corporate Outreach Desk,
Hope you are all enjoying this wonderful weather in Houston as we get ready for summer. I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on
the new happenings in the world of Corporate Outreach.
One of the initiatives of the PMI Houston Outreach this year is to start lunch hour Monthly Brown Bags with Houston area corporations. We
understand that due to family or other personal commitments, it is not always feasible for members to attend PMI Monthly evening meetings
after work. We do not want this to be the reason that PMI Members and those interested in becoming members to not attend monthly
meetings. Hence, we have decided to start PMI Monthly Brown Bags during lunch hour. What better way to spend lunch than to learn
something new in your field of interest and earn PDUs while doing so!!!
After few months of careful planning and collaboration, we are pleased to inform the starting of two lunch hour Brown Bags in Greater Houston
area in June right after our Annual Conference.
Greenway Plaza Brown Bag will be open to all PMI members as well as non-members and Stewart is presently for Stewart Company
Employees.
Greenway Plaza Brown Bag (Open to all)
Enaxis Consulting will be the host for Greenway Plaza Monthly lunch hour Brown Bags. Enaxis Consulting is an IT Consulting Firm specializing
in Oil and Gas Industry. Enaxis has a wonderful facility on the 30th Floor of Greenway Plaza. This brown bag is open to all employees of greater
Houston area companies. PMI members and non-members are welcome to attend. PMI Member PMPs will earn I PDU for attending Brown
Bags. Just to sweeten the deal, lunch will be served and parking at Greenway Plaza validated if you plan on attending.
Stewart Companies (Stewart Employees Only)
Stewart Companies will be starting a Monthly Brown Bag for Stewart Employees in June as well. At present this is open to Stewart Company
employees only, but this may change as we get the program going. At present, the facility has just enough space to hold all the Stewart
Companies Project Managers.
We are in the midst of an ongoing conversation to start lunch hour Brown Bags with several other Houston area corporations. We are keen on
starting Brown Bags in Houston Downtown, Southwest Houston, Woodlands/North Houston, and Houston Energy Corridor. Let us know if you
are keen on starting a Brown Bag at your company? We would love to engage with you or your PMO office on creating a Brown Bag that fits
the bill.
We feel strongly that schedule constraints must not prevent our beloved members and those interested in becoming a member from missing
out on invaluable source of information and ability to collaborate with your colleagues. Let us meet for lunch and nourish our minds. Welcome
to the world of Brown Bags!!!!
For all inquiries pertaining to Houston area Brown Bags, please send your questions, suggestions, or comments to Perry Mehta, PMI Houston
Director of Corporate Outreach, via email to [email protected]
Thank You,
Perry Mehta
