System Overview

• The main components of the MAVEN GSE will be:

– MAVEN Instrument Simulator GSE (MISG) – Instrument Operations GSE (IOG)– Spacecraft Simulator GSE (SSG)– GSE Support Components

System Overview - MISG

• MAVEN Instrument Simulator GSE (MISG)– ZestET1 off-the-shelf module

• High-speed Ethernet (TCP/IP Offload) engine (TOE) • Configurable (Xilinx) FPGA

– Instrument/PFDPU interfaces, along with the data flow and control are implemented in the FPGA, which interacts with the TOE to transfer data to/from the Host Computer

– Base (Interface) Board connects to the Zest-ET1 FPGA• Provides buffers and connectors that match the MAVEN-PFDPU

flight configuration• Houses the Actuator Control circuitry, controlled and monitored by

the Zest-ET1 FPGA– Whenever possible, the MISG uses the actual flight design,

assuring that the simulated interfaces match the flight hardware (The interface between the PFDPU and Instruments is a clocked serial bit-stream)

– Communicates with IOG via TCP/IP

System Overview - MISG

• MAVEN Instrument Simulator GSE (MISG)– PFDPU test interface for instrument bench level testing

• Sends commands to and receives telemetry from the Instrument under test

• Provides an independent but synchronous “high-speed” (8.34MHz) clock for those instruments that require it and a power-supply synch signal

– Instrument test interface for PFDPU testing• MISG receives commands from and sends telemetry to the PFDPU

under test• Simulated instrumenst include SEP, SWEA, SWIA, STATIC (1 and

2), MAG (1 and 2), and LPW instruments• MISG telemetry production is impartial with respect to the

instruments; each of the nine units simulated is personalized via its loaded pattern and operates synchronously to its own dedicated clock supplied by the PFDPU. (In practice, these clocks are 1.048MHz, derived from the PFDPU Master clock.)

System Overview - IOG

• Instrument Operations GSE (IOG)– PC laptop running Windows 7 OS– Telemetry and Command (T&C) control software using off the

shelf software GSEOS• Operation is managed through the use of configuration files and the

Python scripting language• UCB will make use of in-house development already done for the

RBSP and CINEMA projects. In particular, Python modules developed for these projects will be used to:

– Ingest the Command and Telemetry Definition Document (CTM), an excel spreadsheet, and convert it into all of the necessary GSEOS command and telemetry definition files, telemetry limit files, conversion formula definition files, and other GSEOS configuration files

– Supply a scripting interface for closed loop instrument control– Additional advanced plotting capabilities using LabWindows/CVI

and/or IDL applications

System Overview - SSG

• Spacecraft Simulator GSE (SSG)– Hardware/Software that will simulate the spacecraft computer to

PFDPU serial interface protocol (RS422) – Communicates with the IOG over a RS232 serial connection– LabWindows (C) program running on IOG controls hardware

and will relay T&C control with GSEOS via TCP/IP

Test Scenarios

• The MAVEN GSE will support 3 main test scenarios for the PFP before it’s shipped off to the spacecraft manufacturer for mission level I&T– Instrument Bench– PFDPU Bench– PFP I&T

Test Network Design

• A generic “Test Network” will be developed with all of the major components listed sitting behind a router

• GSE Software (GSEOS, python scripts, Labwindows applications, IDL code, etc.) will be under version control (SVN) and the main repository will be accessible via an http server on the lab network

• Data collected during tests will be uploaded from the IOG to a data server/archive also on the lab network
