Project Goal The goal of my capstone project is to raise awareness about male breast cancer. Although male breast cancer is rare, lack of awareness causes the disease to be diagnosed later in men than in women; the key for men is early detection. There are currently many excellent websites about male breast cancer that are medical in nature: focusing on the disease and risks; my site will instead focus on raising awareness through edutainment. 1.3. To learn to combine the skills I have gained while at Harvard Extension School in order create a website that tells a story. 1.4. Target Audience Surveys and focus groups performed during my DGMD E-55 class (Designing Educational Media); revealed that my target audience is adult women. Men and women who participated in my focus groups and responded to my surveys tended to feel that women are more interested in learning about medical issues. By targeting women, they can then share the information with the men in their lives, by sharing the site, sending a link to the video or by sending them the pdf poster of symptoms. Based on those surveys and focus groups; my initial target audience will be adult women. Additionally, many members of my focus groups recommended a site based on edutainment as the topic of cancer can be scary. Using a respectful but slightly less serious tone might reach some people that can be put off by clinical, technical information. Using the free marketing tools available from Similar Web (similarweb.com), I discovered that less than 5,000 people per month worldwide search for information on male breast cancer via the internet. Most of the web traffic going to the two most popular sites solely dedicated to male breast cancer (hisbreastcancer.org andmalebreastcancer.org) are getting 50% of their traffic from social media, the other from internet searches. My goal will be to reach approximately 500 people per month. In order to achieve that target, I will use social media (Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest to start), to attempt to gain an audience. I will also explore using paid ads via Facebook to raise awareness.

DGMD E-598 Digital Media Design Capstone Tutorial Final Proposal Template - Summer 2019

1. Project Scope

1.1 Project Title I Didn’t Think It Could Happen To Me: A Website and Animations to Raise Awareness About Male Breast Cancer

1.2. Project Goal

The goal of my capstone project is to raise awareness about male breast cancer.

1.3. Learning Goals

• To learn more about the WordPress content management system and its modules. • To increase my skills with the Dragon Frame stop motion software. • To learn to combine the skills I have gained while at Harvard Extension School in

order create a website that tells a story.

1.4. Target Audience

Surveys and focus groups performed during my DGMD E-55 class (Designing Educational Media); revealed that my target audience is adult women.

1.5. Elevator Pitch

Men can get breast cancer. Let that sink in a moment, because it’s something that many men are not aware of. My project is aimed at raising awareness about the risks of male breast cancer. Existing sites are excellent sources of medical information, but my site will focus on raising awareness through edutainment. Using WordPress as the platform, the site will include information about the risks, links to medical sites, downloadable posters to raise awareness, and a shareable short stop motion video where we will follow the main character as he is diagnosed with breast cancer and receives treatment.

1.7. Life of the project beyond capstone Does this project exist beyond completing the capstone course? My plan is to continue running this website well after the completion of this capstone course. I feel very strongly about the importance of raising awareness of male breast cancer. Will it help you get a job, get a promotion, create a portfolio, or launch a business? As I near retirement, I have begun to think about what I would like to do in this next stage of life. I am originally from a small town in Michigan, and would like to return to my home state. Many of the smaller, rural towns have community colleges, and it is my goal to teach at one of these rural community colleges. Access to technology training is often lacking in rural areas, and I would like to be able to offer students the opportunity to learn the same skills students in larger areas have. Will your capstone be used or experienced by your target audience after this class? It is my hope that the website will continue, as I strongly believe in the importance of raising awareness about male breast cancer.

2. Competitor review

Review 1: His Breast Cancer (https://www.hisbreastcancer.org/) Description: His Breast Cancer is a website aimed at raising awareness of Male Breast Cancer. It features many pages dealing with diagnosis, prevention, awareness, videos about male breast cancer, and self-examinations. There is even a section with downloadable brochures. A blog is featured, and there is a shopping button, where items about male breast cancer are sold in order to support the site. The site has links to several social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest), as well as an RSS feed. Advantages: This is a very comprehensive site with a great deal of up to date medical information. The site has an entire section focused on BRCA genetics and its link to breast cancer in men and women. The main information on the site appears to be geared toward someone that already has a diagnosis, and contains much useful information on what to expect during treatment. Limitations: While this site contains a great deal of information, the material presented is very dry and clinical in nature. In addition because the site also raises money, there are ads for items used to fund the site (a link to their Amazon Smile account, a link to their book, as well as paid advertisements which detract from the design of the site). The site has an overall unprofessional feel, the design and color choices seem to be dated, the logo is rather busy, and the site has an overall feel of unpolished business. Lastly, while the site is responsive, testing of the site on a cell phone yielded slow download times of images.

Review 2: Times Like These: A trailer (https://vimeo.com/73274666) Description: “Times Like These” is a trailer for a full length documentary of the same name. The documentary is not yet complete, and the trailer is part of a website (https://www.timeslikethesefilm.org/) devoted to raising awareness about male breast cancer and raising additional funding so that they can complete their project. While the video reviewed is only 3 minutes long, the message is powerful: two men talk about their breast cancer diagnosis and the bond they form over their mutual diagnosis and their treatment. Advantages: A beautifully filmed professional video. Despite being only a 3 minute trailer, the viewer is made aware of the disease, and the treatments. A very emotionally powerful video, and does a good job of pointing out the lack of awareness about the disease as well as lack of information about male specific treatments for breast cancer. Limitations: While a very potent video, and a wonderful story; this video may not be for everyone. The topic can be frightening for some, and the serious tone of the movie might not be to everyone’s taste.

Review 3: Bladder Cancer Awareness Network (https://www.bcan.org/) Description: While not about male breast cancer, this site is dedicated to raising awareness about a another kind of cancer. It is well organized and well designed. The site features information about this disease, clinical trials, research, and ways to get involved. Advantages: The color palette is eye catching without being too bright. The donation button is tastefully placed in the upper corner where it does not detract from the information presented. Sponsor and partner logos are discretely placed at the bottom of the page where they do not distract. The site features social media links, and contact information. The information in the site is well organized, featuring information about the disease and links to additional information. Information is well presented, designed for the layperson with explanations that are thorough yet not too technical. There are additionally downloadable fact sheets and brochures. Limitations: While the site is well organized, and contains much useful information; it is presented in such a way as to be rather dry. Most of the information is text based, with some photos and links to webinars, but an embedded video might help reach some users that prefer their learning to be visual.

3. Technology requirements The following represents the list of tools and equipment that will be used for this project, alternatives considered and the courses that I learned the technology in:

3.1 Website

WordPress WordPress is an open source content management system (CMS) based on PhP. Currently, WordPress is used on almost 60% of websites worldwide, and has a large number of themes, plugins and widgets available. I will be using the skills and knowledge gained for the Website portion of the project from these classes:

• CSCI E-15: Dynamic Web Applications: installing and hardening the site, as well as user security, and any PhP used on the site:

• CSCI E-3: Web Programming/JavaScript: for any JavaScript: • CSCI E-12 Fundamentals of Website Development: HTML/CSS skills will draw on the

course • DGMD E-20: Modern, Mobile Front-End Design: Ensuring that the site is

responsive, and accessible as well as editing the HTML5/CSS:

Page 11: 1. Project Scopenrtcapstoneproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Taylor-Nancy_Final... · Page 1 of 33. DGMD E-598 Digital Media Design Capstone Tutorial . Final Proposal Template

• DGMD E-50: Introduction to Visual Communication Design: For the design and artwork for the site:

• Lynda.Com: In addition, I will be using the Lynda.com to install, configure and administer this website.

Several different options were considered for the site:

• Bootstrap framework site utilizing HTML/CSS • Laravel Framework • Drupal CMS

A content management system seemed the best fit for project for several reasons:

• Because of the way a CMS is organized, all assets (data, account information, images) are stored in a database. Any future updates or design changes would not affect the core information.

• In the future, should additional administrators of the site become necessary, granting access will be a simple process

• Future administrators and contributor would not need to have access to editing software like Dreamweaver, nor would they need to have coding knowledge in order to contribute to the site.

Since I have experience with Drupal at my current position, I had decided on that CMS for this project. However, when discussing my project and future goals for my degree with Professor Jen Kramer she recommended I use WordPress for several reasons:

• One future goal is to teach at the community college level. Because WordPress is more widely used, having this skillset will allow my future students to learn a skill that could help them with their career goals.

• Because WordPress is the most widely used (at this time) CMS, there are more add-ons, plugins and instruction available for the platform.

• Learning WordPress will help me at my current position: by having another platform in my tool belt.

3.2 Video

Filming Technology: Dragonframe Dragonframe is an application created specifically for the filming of stop motion video. The application is used to control the camera directly allowing for very fine grained adjustments. The application also features a usb controller designed specifically for controlling the camera during filming. This software is used commercially, and has been

Page 12: 1. Project Scopenrtcapstoneproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Taylor-Nancy_Final... · Page 1 of 33. DGMD E-598 Digital Media Design Capstone Tutorial . Final Proposal Template

used on films such as Frankenweenie, Coraline and Star Wars: The force Awakens (holochess scene), as well as the Shaun the Sheep television show. While creating this video, I will be relying heavily on the skills I gained in the following courses:

• DGMD E-30 Video Field Production : Lighting, camera techniques (panning/tilting/etc.), audio recording and editing:

• DGMD E-35 Video Editing and Design : Editing of video and audio, adding special effects:

• DGMD E-55 Designing Instructional Media: Editing and manipulating of photographs:

• For the photography portion of the stop motion video, I will also be relying on my experience in my job where I have experience as a photographer, videographer and animator. Additionally, I have taken a one-year course in photography at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska, and will using the skills gained in that course as well.

When considering how to make the video for this site, I considered other alternatives:

• Hiring actual actors for a live action film • Creating an animated video

Stop Motion was the best choice for this project for the following reasons:

• A live action film would require hiring of actors. Because the area I live in has a smaller population, finding talent would be challenging.

• A live action production would require the renting of equipment that I do not have, and could be expensive to acquire in this region.

• A fully animated video would require a level of artistic ability that I do not feel that I have.

• A Stop Motion would allow me to utilize equipment I already own, or could easily acquire; and allow me a diverse cast of characters as the Barbie line of fashion dolls now comes in dolls of all ages, sizes, races and abilities.

Editing: Technology: Adobe Creative Suite The Adobe Creative suite includes applications for editing, and manipulating audio, video and still images. Because of the design, each application works seamlessly with the other applications in the suite, including editing from within other applications (editing the audio files from the video editing application for example). I will be using the following apps from the Adobe Creative Suite for the editing portion of the video:

Page 13: 1. Project Scopenrtcapstoneproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Taylor-Nancy_Final... · Page 1 of 33. DGMD E-598 Digital Media Design Capstone Tutorial . Final Proposal Template

After Effects: Titling and Special Effects Audition: Editing sound files Illustrator: All artwork for the site Lightroom: Management of photographs used Photoshop: Editing of photographs used on the site. Premiere Pro: although the stop motion portion of the video will be filmed using Dragonframe, the editing of the film will all be done in Adobe Premiere Pro I will be utilizing the editing skills I gained in the following courses for the editing portion of the video:

• DGMD E-30 Video Field Production • DGMD E-35 Video Editing and Design • DGMD E-55 Designing Instructional Media

The only other alternative I considered was Final Cut Pro, however only Adobe Creative Suite has the entire collection of applications needed for this project, and only Adobe Creative Suite is designed to allow the individual applications to work together seamlessly

4.1 Video I Didn’t Think It Could Happen to Me will be an HD video of approximately five minutes shot in HD format using the stop motion technique. The video will tell the story of Ken, whose wife Barbie, discovers a lump on his chest. The viewer will follow Ken as he is diagnosed and receives treatment. During the video, Ken will learn about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and be directed toward learning tools for learning about how to perform a self-examination. Ken will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer, require a mastectomy, radiation therapy, and follow up physical therapy. Ken will have a good outcome, and the final scene will be of Ken and Barbie years later reflecting on their life together and being glad that Ken is still healthy. The video will be shot entirely by me and will require no additional crew. Voiceover actors will be hired through Fiverr.com and supply audio files that will be incorporated into the film during the editing process. The video will be shot using Mattel Ken and Barbie fashion dolls. The dolls will be of varying ages from infant through senior citizen, and feature a cast of diverse characters of different races and abilities. The main characters will be special articulated dolls that have additional joint articulations allowing the dolls to bend at the ankles, knees, hips, waist, shoulders, elbows and wrists. Other characters will be standard dolls without the specialized articulation.

Props will consist of specialized and often bespoke items such as furniture, home furnishings, office equipment, clothing and vehicles created on a 1:6 scale. While many items are produced by the Mattel Company for this line of doll, those items are often made of brightly colored plastics in primary colors and will be used sparingly and only when no other alternative exists to make the sets appear as realistic as possible. For some of the more technical scenes – such as surgery and radiation treatment, Ken will enter the room and scene will fade as I do not have the medical expertise nor can I acquire to-scale props to create those scenes accurately. The video will be hosted on YouTube, with privacy set to allow anyone to view the video, share or embed it. I have not yet decided on allowing comments, as my concern is that opening the comments will have the potential for trolls. The description of the video will include links to all sites and information included in the video.
