If you see the serial number from a d Hawkins’ epilog eclipse, it reads 00014. as in the fourteenth eclipse laser epilog ever produced.

The year was 1991 – the first year Epilog began showcasing equipment on the tradeshow circuit – and as a d and adela Hawkins perused the epilog booth, they knew this revolutionary technology was a necessity for their business.

“small lasers were very new to the market in 1991, so selecting a manufacturer seemed like risky business,” a d tells us. “We primarily made our decisions based off the first impressions we got from the principals of the company – turns out we made the right decision with epilog.”

In 1991, a d and adela were already in the awards business, selling manufactured laser plaques in their shop, trophy Works, located in Modesto, California.

“It didn’t take a lot of foresight to see where the industry was headed,” a d said. “We prided our shop on being the most professional and tech-savvy – Epilog’s equipment just fit our business. they helped take us from a trophy building business to a higher level of award services. they helped us maintain our competitive edge.”

“also, their competitive pricing was an important part in the decision-making process,” adela mentioned.

as in most every other industries, cutting-edge innovations often come with their share of challenges.

“Initially, we had some difficulties with our first Eclipse,” A D said. “But Epilog and its tech support team were right there with us, troubleshooting, sending parts and warranty items at no charge – their priority was to make sure we got everything we needed to keep our business running.” continuted on next page...

In fact, epilog’s responsiveness and commitment prompted the Hawkins to purchase their second machine, a previously used epilog system, from another awards dealer. turns out that was a good business decision also.

“It was a deal we couldn’t resist,” a d said. “the second machine doubled our production capabilities and was as reliable as the first.”

Many things have changed over the last 17 years – new technologies have been developed and competition in the laser engraving industry has increased – but both of a d and adela’s eclipses are still up and running.

“We’ve since purchased a Mini 24,” a d explains. “Its speed and quality puts us in another class of production, but we still use the eclipses for routine jobs including woods and plastics on a regular basis. With regular, simple maintenance, we’ve kept both eclipses in very good working condition.”

A D tells us the rotating fixtures on the Mini 24 have allowed them to do more intricate glass work on a variety of types, but even with eclipse, the duo managed to work well with regular glass.

“after all these years we still have some of our initial work samples from the eclipse featured on our display boards. Whether I’m working with an Eclipse or the Mini, I still find myself staring into the machine while it is running and marveling at what we do.”

When asked what’s helped keep is business going all these years, a d tells us “Like other businesses out there, we do make mistakes. but what makes us unique is that we consistently produce quality work – every time and we guarantee it. We’re are not afraid to try new and difficult jobs, even though sometimes we end up pulling our hair out while doing them.”

sample Club: slate Cocktail CoastersCheck out these fun and funky slate coasters featuring the recipes of classic cocktails. A sturdy design and contemporary look make these ideal for parties or everyday use!

Materials: 4-inch by 4-inch slate coasters - we purchased a 4-pack from WestPort Style at www.westportstyle.com To download the files needed for this sample club visit www.epiloglaser.com/sc_slate_coasters.htm The Epilog system used for this project was a 45 watt Helix. Place your first slate coaster in the machine. First, open the file sc_coaster_marg.cdr.NOTE: Depending on the size and manufacturer of your slate coasters, we recommend drawing a vector box around the design and running the job with the lid open to ensure proper placement. On a 45-watt Helix, we used the following settings for each 4-inch by 4-inch coaster:RASTER SPEED: 100%RASTER POWER: 30%Resolution: 600 DPI

Repeat the steps for the other 3 downloaded files.

tech Library: single Line Fonts in CoreldraW X4 Single-line fonts are in high demand by traditional engravers. Corel has recently attempted to meet that demand by creating a set a of new fonts that emulate the single-line effect.

While they are not true single-line fonts, CorelDRAW X4 has created 10 fonts that they call “Engraver’s Fonts”. These fonts emulate the look of traditional engraving fonts, but like all of the fonts you use in Corel they do have outlines and fills associated with them.

These fonts can be found on the Corel X4 DVD. Please note: Corel has changed the disc format they use for X4. Prior to X4 all Corel versions came on CD format. X4 now comes on DVD format. If you only have a CD player on your computer you will not be able to load X4 from the DVD disc.

Corel has grouped these fonts together alphabetically with a “Gxx” prefix so they can be easily located. The font names are listed below:

• G1L D01 Deko• G1L S06 Sans Machine Cond Italic• G1L SC01 Script English• G1L SC02 Script American• G1L SL01 Memphis• G4L A01 Garamond Italic• G4L A02 Century• G4L A03 Nimbus Roman• G4L A07 Souvenir• G4L S14 Fette Din Mittel

Once they are loaded onto your computer, you can use them with any version of Corel.

These 10 engraving fonts will not load automatically from the CorelDRAW X4 DVD – they must be loaded manually.

To load them, use Bitstream Font Navigator (or your favorite font installation tool) and follow the path: DVD Drive | Extras | Content | Fonts | True Type – Engraver. Please note: Bitstream Font Navigator crashed when we tried installing the G1L S06 Sans Machine Cond Italic font. You can use Bitstream Font Navigator to load the other fonts, but we recommend you deselect G1L S06 Sans Machine Cond Italic to avoid difficulty. We expect that Corel with resolve this issue at some point in the future so that Bitstream Font Navigator can be used to install this font. I in the meantime, an alternate method for installing fonts is to use the Font folder in the Windows Control Panel.

Zing Laser release epilog recently launched the Zing Laser, the newest addition to the company’s product line. the Zing Laser was featured at the recent ara show in Las vegas, nevada.

“We’re extremely happy with the response so far,” said Mike dean, director of sales and marketing for epilog.

“the goal was to create an entry-level machine that is both affordable and functional, and I think we met that goal with the Zing Laser.”

as with epilog’s entire product line, top-notch performance and quality results are of the highest importance. the Zing Laser allows for 1000 dpI engraving; the full power of a 25-watt laser tube; and features an all-new custom Laser dashboard™ that allows users to print directly from many of the Windows® based software programs they already use.

“the laser tube is paramount,” dean said. “Other low-cost systems use disposable, water-cooled, glass laser tubes. the new Zing Laser uses an air-cooled metal Waveguide laser tube with power guaranteed at 25 watts or more.” “additionally, the Zing’s high-speed engraving results in detailed photographs and crisp grayscale images that just cannot be produced by other low-cost machines,” dean said.

delivery of the Zing Laser will start in the second quarter of 2008, but you can purchase yours now. For more informationvisit www.zinglaser.com.
