While pursuing his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Toronto, he taught visual arts and art history in MSSB high schools. His passion for art was well known and inspired many art students. In 1983, he became art consultant for the Board, becoming a mentor to many art teachers. In the mid 1990's he was appointed superintendent of education with the TCDSB and held that position until his death. Mario is remembered for his love of art, his breadth of knowledge, his high standards, and his generous manner with students and teachers alike.

Inspiring Initiative Gives Jane & Finch Elementary School A Facelift Saturday April 28, 2007 www.citynews.ca
For a tree to grow, seeds need to be planted, and that's kind of what happened at St. Charles Garnier Catholic School Saturday afternoon.A facelift and some new additions were the plan, when hundreds of volunteers descended on the Jane and Finch-area elementary school for a massive overhaul that should make a major impact on the students and extremely multi-cultural school community. For years the busy school's existed with no playground or field to speak of, but on Saturday that all changed.Roughly 600 volunteers took part, including Ryan McDonnell, whose high school class collected books for the multi-faceted project.
"Our grand total was just short of 3,000 books," McDonnell boasted. In addition to the books, St. Charles also got 40 new computers, two playgrounds and a soccer field. Students and parents alike are hoping it all ads up to one big change for the better."If our school changed I think the students can change too," said hopeful eighth grader Jessica Carrera. The initiative comes with a price tag of approximately $250,000, but the looks on the children's faces when everything's unveiled Monday morning will likely be proof enough that it's worth every penny.

Speeders trade fine for lecture May 01, 2007www.torontopolice.on.ca
Schoolchildren who snared speeders steaming past their school last week meted out a form of punishment they’ve become accustomed to – a stern lecture. For the second consecutive year, Grade 5 and 6 students from St. Luke Catholic Elementary School, along with officers from 14 Division, pulled over drivers along the 40km/h school zone on Ossington Ave. just north of College St. but gave them a rare opportunity to get out of a speeding ticket by opting for a firm lecture about road safety instead. “No one ever takes a ticket,” said Sgt. Bernie MacDonald, although one man hesitated after seeing the gauntlet of media he would have to contend with along with a child’s lecture to avoid the fine. “It’s a good chance to
lecture adults without getting into trouble,” said Laura Henrique, 11, who relished the opportunity to let drivers know that speed kills. The yellow ticket details the fine, demerit points and probability of death of a child struck by the car. Students use a mathematical formula to judge the probability of death, measuring the speed and calculating the impact on the spot with aid of a laptop computer while officers used radar. “I’m a little embarrassed so I guess you guys did your job,” said motorist Mark Sheehan. “It’s better than getting a ticket or hurting someone.” Sheehan said he learned his lesson. “I’ll never speed on this road again.” MacDonald said offending drivers take heed, but it’s still too easy to find speeders, clocking drivers at 51 to 67 km/h that day in the school zone. “It impacts the speed of cars on this road,” said MacDonald, who initiated the program last year in 14 Division. “We try and drive it home that speeding is serious.” He bemoans the fact that despite the numerous onlookers and police presence gathered on the side of the road on April 27, most of drivers didn’t slow down. School teacher Nelia Victorino said traffic safety is an important issue on the stretch of Ossington Ave. where three schools populate a few blocks. She said her students have learned that many different people speed and that the consequences are dire.

Bishop Allen Exchange with Nunavut School Fourteen students and three teachers from Bishop Allen Academy travelled to Rankin Inlet, Nunavut from April 19th to the 26th. For all of us this has been an experience that has opened our eyes to the larger reality of Canada and our place in this country.
The Inuit introduced us to their love of the land and to the intimacy of their community. We had to learn how to communicate afresh. We love to use words - they speak through silences. One of our group asked an Inuit boy the same question over and over and was frustrated at not receiving a reply. The southerner had to be told that in fact a reply had been given. "Yes" is indicated by a slight raising of the eyebrow. This is just one example of the unique quality of the Inuit culture.
Our young people participated in drum-dancing; they shared in a pukaluk, a traditional Inuit meal of raw caribou, whale and seal; and they sat and listened to the wisdom of an eighty year old elder who shared his experience of living as a nomad on the tundra for over forty years. We marvelled at the beauty of this wild and magnificent landscape of snow, ice and rock. We discovered that something could be so stark and so beautiful at the same time. We visited the local elementary school where our students and the Rankin Inlet High School students worked together on a literacy project with the grade three students. We realized that as many differences that there are between our two cultures, there are as many if not more ways in which we are the same.
We look forward to our friends from Nunavut visiting us in mid May so that we can share with them our stories and our province. Submitted by: Don Walker, Bishop Allen Academy
