ALL ARE WELCOME to a Discussion on the

Value & Future of Catholic Education

We can only become stronger through enriched dialogue of our strengths and opportunities.

Dear Colleagues and Partners in Catholic Education: The Institute for Catholic Education (ICE) hosted a symposium in November regarding Catholic Education - Navigating through Turbulent Waters. As a result of this gathering of Catholic stakeholders, each Catholic Board in the Province of Ontario was asked to host discussion sessions with their communities on the value and future of Catholic education.

We at the TCDSB have organized three centrally located sessions in the hopes of providing ample opportunity for everyone who has an interest in Catholic Education to engage in the following five (5) discussion items:

1. The Distinctiveness of Catholic Schools 2. The Value of Catholic School 3. Our hopes for Catholic Schools 4. Major Issues Facing Catholic Schools Now and in the Future 5. Promoting and Protecting Catholic Education for the Future

Sessions are being hosted for students by our Student Trustee as well as some by our Employee Unions and Associations.

All parishioners, clergy, parents, students, staff and all who have an interest in Catholic education are most welcome to attend one of the following central, west or east locations. All sessions commence at 7:00 p.m. at the following locations:

WEST Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Tuesday, February 27th Catholic Secondary School - Library 1515 Bloor Street West, Toronto (Underground Parking is Available off of Bloor St. or Access from the Dundas West Subway Station)

EAST Pope John Paul II Catholic Tuesday, February 27th Secondary School - Library 685 Military Trail, Scarborough (Parking is Available in the School Lot)

CENTRAL Catholic Education Centre Thursday, March 1st 80 Sheppard Avenue East 2nd floor – Atrium (Underground Parking is Available or Access from the Sheppard Subway Station) NOTE Archbishop Thomas Collins has kindly accepted our invitation to be present at the March 1st session.

Please take the opportunity to dialogue about the richness of our system and the challenges. We welcome your active participation and valuable in-put. Kevin Kobus Director of Education

SEARCH FOR PARTICIPANTS SOCIAL WORK DEPARTMENT VIDEO PROJECT

The Social Work department is engaged in a video project entitled Stand Up – Be the Change. The video will encourage students to take responsibility for themselves, their school and their communities through three objectives:

1. Celebrating the differences in themselves and their peers; 2. Speaking up and standing up together for others in need and; 3. Focusing on the positive impact they can make on others.

It's with this last objective that we are seeking participation. Many adults reflect on their past and can identify an experience where another person said or did something simple, that in the end, had a tremendous impact on their lives. Perhaps it was a coach encouraging a young player to work hard, a teacher making a comment that motivated a student throughout their academic career or a friend showing support that changed the direction of person's life.

Grade 10 drama students from Cardinal Carter Academy are featured throughout the video. We are now searching for teachers, parents, support staff and any other adult individuals who would volunteer to offer a short comment or story addressing the power of being positive and impact an individual can make on another person with a simple gesture. Our videographer, Jeff Dobbin would film selected participants for approximately ten minutes.

If interested, please e-mail a brief description of your story to John Wilhelm, Chief Social Worker by March 2, 2007 to: [email protected] .

TCDSB GOES GREEN!

Earth Day = April 22, 2007! – Spring Cleanup!

Time to start thinking of all the environmental things that you have been doing throughout the year, and reflect and those accomplishments. Use Earth Day, April 22 or the week leading up to it, to promote your

environmental projects/programs/initiatives. Don’t forget to look out for the City of Toronto 20-minute make-over enrol, which TCDSB schools have

a history of participation! Hopefully we can make this year another great year for cleaning up the city, and bring awareness to the amount of waste that we produce, and recklessly throw away.

Take a clear bag along for recyclables! The forms should be available in the next couple of weeks.

“We Do Not Inherit The Earth From Our Ancestors, We Borrow It From

Our Children”

Minimize Waste! TCDSB current recycles computers, but is investigating expanding the program

to all IT equipment. Make sure your Computer Equipment gets recycled!

Conserve Energy! Make sure your computer, monitor

and all peripherals (printers, scanners, etc) are turned off at the

end of the day or for long durations.

Set in the doctor's lounge of a London hospital three days before Christmas, the staff is preparing the annual holiday show. But that is only the sideshow. The real business is a conference of neurosurgeons. As Dr. David Mortimore is preparing his lecture that should guarantee him a knighthood and the hospital some badly needed funds, a former nurse bursts in with the news that their fling some 18 years and 9 months ago made Mortimore a father. The boy is downstairs desperate to meet his long lost Dad. In true farce style, lies pile on lies, as the doctor enlists his colleagues to deceive his wife, his boss, a police sergeant and even his newfound son.

Don’t miss the fun! February 23, 24 & March 2, 3

Local schools host Arctic Games this month CYNTHIA REASON, Etobicoke, The Guardian 02/06/07 Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School will be one of four GTA schools taking advantage of the frigid weather to host the second Annual Arctic Games this month. Linda Preston, a physical education teacher, said about 400 kids from local elementary schools will partake in activities as varied as spear throwing, seal crawling, snowshoeing and sledge jumping at the Feb. 26 event. "All students will gain a valuable experience in learning traditional Inuit games, an appreciation for learning about other cultures and traditions, and experience it through participation," she said.

Preston said she and fellow organizing committee members Julia McNamara and Liz Petrini, are currently in the process of recruiting and training 70 Grade 11 and 12 students at Michael Power/St. Joseph's (MPSJ) to run the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. slate of activities and to welcome and guide the elementary student participants. "We are so fortunate to have great leaders at MPSJ, especially in the physical education department, where we get most of our students," she said.

The Arctic Games were the brainchild of Patrick Keyes, the principal of Holy Spirit Catholic School in Scarborough. He said the idea for the event stemmed from Lt.-Gov. James K. Bartleman's initiative to twin schools in Nunavut with schools in Ontario. "From that came the idea that we should hold Arctic Games to celebrate and learn about the culture of the Arctic," he said.

While the inaugural games last year were confined to one site, this year's event has expanded to four different Toronto Catholic District School Board schools across the GTA. Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton School in Bloor West Village, Brebeuf College in North York and Pope John Paul II School in Scarborough have also signed on to host events in their regions from Feb. 12 to March 2. A total of 1,200 elementary students will take part.

Keyes said the authenticity of the Arctic Games will be given a boost by visiting Inuit students from Algonquin College's Nunavut Sivunilsavut program. Eighteen students from that leadership program will go on a week-long tour of schools in the Catholic board, demonstrating throat singing and traditional games, as well as speaking to students about critical issues such as climate change in the Arctic.

"We have a lot to learn from the Inuit, this is a culture that has thrived in a hostile environment for 3,000 years. There is a wisdom to the Inuit that can help us all," Keyes said, adding that climate change is a particularly important topic. "The Inuit are acting as important guides in our journey toward a sustainable society that is in harmony with the natural world." Keyes said he also sees the Arctic Games as a starting point for a dialogue between northern and southern youth, one which will open the door to understanding the challenges faced by the Inuit. "The importance of cultivating community is vital. We see this as bringing together school communities in a positive, collaborative way," he said.

George Shields from the Harmonize for Speech Fund visits the Kindergarten Language Program at St. Mary School

On January 25th, George Shields from the Barbershoppers Harmonize for Speech Fund visited the Kindergarten Language Program (KLP) at St. Mary School. A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to George Shields and the Barbershoppers in recognition of the contribution of $1,000 to the KLP to purchase theme related snacks to enhance the program. The Kindergarten Language Program (KLP) is an early intervention program for SK students with language and literacy needs. The program is preventative, with a focus on oral language as the foundation for literacy and social development. Students attend the KLP program in groups of 8 for two half days a week in addition to the regular SK program. Currently, there are 8 KLP programs in TCDSB. Each program is co-instructed by a Teacher and Speech-Language Pathologist. Coordinated through the Speech and Language Department, this is the 10th year for the KLP program in TCDSB. Teacher Michelle Barrett and Speech-Language Pathologist Marieke Favrod involved George Shields in the activities of the KLP at St. Mary. He joined with the KLP students in learning about pigs, rhyming words that go with pig, drawing pictures of pigs, and finally helping the KLP students make the snack ‘pigs in a blanket’. His passion for students with communication needs was evident in his interactions with the KLP children. Thanks to Principal Laurie Levay and the staff of St. Mary for welcoming George Shields to the school.

Winter may be a season of dormancy – but not in Ontario’s Catholic Education community. The recent ICE Symposium has inspired teams of parents, teacher, students, administrators and parish teams to sit down and clarify their vision for the future of Catholic Education The more certain we are of our vision, our gifts and strengths the more successful we will be in preserving Catholic Education. Discerning our gifts can reduce our vulnerability to external forces. Henri Nouwen once mused that, “to the degree that we have lost our dependencies on this world, whatever world means … we can form a community of faith in which there is little to defend and much to share. Because as a community of faith, we take the world seriously but not too seriously.”* A prayer for Catholic education might be that defenses come down in favour of a generous sharing of gifts.

Listen to two dynamic presenters: Myrtle Power and Fr. Michael Crosby. Registration deadline is March 8th, 2007. Registration information can be found at www.carfleo.org Recognizing Excellence in Religious Education and Family Life Education It has been the tradition in past years to present the Archbishop Pocock Award for Religious Education at the CARFLEO Conference in April, and the Fr. Angus MacDougall Award for Family Life at “When Faith Meets Pedagogy” in October. After a good bit of discussion within the CARFLEO executive, the decision has been made to “bring home” the Fr. Angus MacDougall Award, and present both at the CARFLEO Conference in April (see below). Archbishop Philip Pocock Award for outstanding contributions in the field of Catholic Religious Education will be presented at the CARFLEO Conference. Complete the attached nomination form and email to Les Miller at [email protected] by February 21st. Fr. Angus MacDougall Award Excellence in Family Life Education will be awarded at the CARFLEO Conference. Complete the attached nomination form and email to Les Miller at [email protected] by February 21st. HRE 3 / 4 U C E ICE will be sending a letter to all Catholic boards with further instructions regarding HRE 3 and HRE 4 - the advice will be to retain HRE3/4 M/O for the 2007/2008 school year. ICE is reviewing the new Council of Colleges and Universities policy guidelines for 2008 to clarify next steps. Local boards do have the option of applying for Locally Developed Optional Course status for their HRE 3E and HRE 4E courses using the criteria and rationale in the ICE Policy Document. Ministry contacts indicate that this would typically be successful and would happen in time for Sept 2007. C

For more information, contact Forum Coordinator John Quinn at 905-934-9115 or [email protected] NORE News The National Office of Religious Education (NORE) is in the midst of becoming the National Office for Evangelization and Catechesis (NOEC). The main work of the office will be to prepare a National Catechetical Syllabus. This will serve as a sort of National 'policy document' of expectations in religious education. Special Needs Religious Education Joanne Chafe of NORE noted in a recent teleconference with the CARFLEO Executive Committee that students of all abilities will be living and function to some extent in the world beyond school. Therefore, students with special needs should have some exposure to the content of the core religious education programs to the extent that they are able. The Bishops typically reject any proposals for 'parallel programs' that deviate completely from any of the expectations of the core Religious Education programs K-12.
