The concept is thought to have
originated in the United States.
Today, National Spelling Beecompetitions for English are held in
the United States, United Kingdom,
Australia, New Zealand, Canada,
Indonesia, and now in Mexico
among others.
What is a Spelling Bee?
A spelling Bee is a competition where participants,
are asked to spell words in English.
The Spelling Bee Contest is the first Interscholastic
Spelling Bee Competition in English taking place in
Mexico D.F. in official schools (SEP DF). This
initiative is of interest to show aspects of Anglo-
Saxon cultures, linked to the vocation of our
teachers teaching the subject of a foreign language,
since the spelling is one of the most complicated
and difficult skills to master in learning English.
Objective: To motivate and encouragestudents of English to the practical application
of spelling rules and vocabulary knowledge
through learning the language and spelling of
words that enable them to strengthen and
apply their knowledge.

school.
SEP DF Spelling Bee Contest is an oral competition, and

Once in the contest, the participant in turn will be asked to spell the corresponding word
The participant will have the opportunity to ask for the word to be repeated; if in doubt,
he or she may ask for the definition of the word; and finally, if necessary, he or she may ask to
have the word used in a sentence
Words will be pronounced according to the phonetic markings in the Webster’s Dictionary, from which the pronouncer can select the definition or definitions that he/she will give, if
needed. The pronouncer may give a fuller explanation of the meaning of a word, to
supplement the dictionary definitions quoted.
This means that if a contestant has any doubts about the word he/she has to spell,
he/she may ask for a sentence or definition before spelling the word . It is not
permitted to ask for a sentence or definition after each word

1. The participant says the word as an indication that he or she has started; then, he or she starts
the actual spelling; and when finished, he or she says the word again as an indication that it is
finished.
Moderator: antiseptic
Participant: antiseptic / / antiseptic
2. Participants have to say the word before and after spelling it; if they fail to do so, they will be
eliminated from the contest.
The process of the spelling should be as follows:

3. Having started spelling a word, a speller may stop and start over, retracing the spelling
from the beginning, but in retracing there can be NO change of letters or their sequence
from those first pronounced. If letters or their sequence are changed in the re-spelling, the
speller will be eliminated. In other words, a speller cannot correct himself. This can be done
no more than two times.
4. Upon missing the spelling of a word, the participant will immediately be stopped from
taking part in the rest of the rounds in the contest. Then a new word will be given to the next
contestant.
5. The contest shall be conducted in rounds. Each speller remaining in the spelling bee at
the start of a round shall spell one word in the round, except when there are two spellers
remaining.

6. When the participants are reduced to two, the elimination procedure changes. At this point, if
one of the participants misspells a word, the other one is given an opportunity to spell the same
word. If the second participant spells the word correctly and he/she spells the next word given to
him/her correctly as well, he /she will be declared the winner.
If the second participant misspells the new word, then this word is referred to the first participant,
who has to spell it. If he/she spells this word correctly, plus a new word he/she will be the winner.
IMPORTANT: Any questions related to the spelling of a word should be referred to the designated
Moderator immediately. No complaints will be accepted after a new word has been given to
another participant. If there are any problems or doubts, the External Moderator will decide what
to do. His/Her decision is conclusive.
