PROJECT OUTLINE
SituationMobile phones and their related products are becoming one of the biggest growing industries of today. Most people own a mobile phone and use them daily. It has revolutionised the telecommunications industry. The intended market for mobile phones and their related products now seem to be targeting the younger aged customer.
TaskAs a product designer it is your task to design and manufacture a holder for a mobile phone aimed at the teenage market. Not only will this product hold the mobile phone it will also emit a small amount of light to show the phones location at night when it’s dark. You will use a low level light source in the form of a light emitting diode (LED), in a simple circuit and fluorescent acrylic to maximise the small light source.
Page 2
TechnologyMeasurementIt is important that the mobile phone fits into the holder correctly in order to fulfil it’s intended function. Therefore you need to make sure you know the dimensions of the phone you will be making the holder for.
TaskUsing correct techniques shown to you by your subject tutor please mark on the correct dimensions for the overall length, width and thickness of your mobile phone. Show this on the drawing above.Scale: Mark on the drawing the actual dimensions is to show the measurement as a scale of 1: 1.What do you think the scale of 1:2 means? Therefore what does a scale of 2:1 mean?
Show the correct measurements for the following:
a) 200 x 400 at a scale of 2:1 = 400 x 800b) 100 x 200 at a scale of 1:2 = 50 x 100c) 300 x 200 at a scale of 1:2 =d) 500 x 1000 at a scale of 1:4 =e) 25 x 60 at a scale of 4:1 =
It is important that you remember the ratios the correct way round. Try writing them as fractions to help you when you are working with scale

TechnologySpecificationNow we have the correct sizes of your mobile phone, we need to look at what we will actually make. We are going to change the basic shapes of some of the parts to make them look better, but before we can do this, we need to write out a specification.A specification gives us guidance as to what we are expecting when the item will be finished. It is normally based on your research and general knowledge. It is a list that once produced, we must stick to. We will return to it at the end of our project.Mind-map some of the topics and issues that you think will need to cover in your specification
