1 Volume 36 Number 7 July/August 2015 Punta Gorda, Florida Elks Lodge #2606 The Tale As we move into summer, many of our members find this is the ideal time to visit the Lodge. We still have the same great food and entertainment without the crowds and we defi- nitely need your support during the summer months. We are the only Lodge in our district – and many other districts- who are open and serve meals every day. We are so fortunate to have this beautiful location and we have lots planned for your enjoyment. Please check your calendar so you don’t miss anything. Again this July, we are planning to have the $1.00 application fee. In order to take ad- vantage of this special fee, you must make application in July, attend Investigation- Orientation on August 11 and be initiated on August 18. There are no exceptions. Please call or visit the Lodge Secretary's office if you are interested and would like more information. Our 4 th of July Party is the kick-off of our Veterans Victory Park project. This is a very ambitious project to beautify our waterfront and Tiki area. We need lots of volunteers and donations but know the final outcome will be something we will all enjoy and be proud of. Watch for information posted around the Lodge to see how you can get involved. A special thank you to Ambrose Yelovich. Ambrose has been our Lodge Chaplain for eleven years. He has also headed up the Blood Bank for 7 years. Now he comes out every Tuesday with another member, Joe Smigel, and does yard work even in the blistering Punta Gorda heat. He has also been submitting articles to the National Elks Magazine for our Lodge. Ambrose is a very active volunteer and I thank him for all he does. When you see him, please say a big thank you for his service. As you may know, our Treasurer, Bob Hahn, is retiring at the end of this Lodge year-March 2016. Bob has been Treasurer for the last four years and is responsible for the excellent financial condition of our Lodge. Now we need someone who has the knowledge and is willing to step up and help out. This is a paid position but as you may have guessed, the pay is not high. If you are qualified, please consider applying for this position. Still looking for VOLUNTEERS! This time Carl Parsons is asking for your help. Carl is the Chairman of Wings & Rings on Sunday afternoons. This event has become very popular and is offered most Sunday’s. Problem is: Alt- hough many people want to eat Wings & Rings not too many want to work. Can you help once a month? Please call me at the Lodge 637-2606 x 405 and I’ll pass your name along to Carl. Let's keep the good food going. And speaking of the Lodge, I'm sure you have noticed the work being done on the parking lot. There were lots of complaints about the holes and standing water. So now the grassy area has been filled, sodded and roped off for the summer. The next step will be to fill the holes in the asphalt and to resurface and stripe the parking lot at the end of the rainy season. This is work that needs to be done but is inconvenient for everyone. Your patience will be appre- ciated. Paul and I will be attending the Elks National Convention in Indianapolis from July 5-9 and then traveling to Michigan to visit our son and his family. From there we're going to South Carolina to visit our daughter and her family and then back home to Punta Gorda. I'm sorry that we will miss the 4 th of July party here at the Lodge but that's when Grand Lodge schedules the convention. I hope everyone has an enjoyable summer. Be safe and I'll see you back at the Lodge. Julie Avers, ER (941) 637-2606 X405 [email protected]

The Punta Gorda Elks Lodge 2606 is planning their “Summer 2015 Project - The Veterans Victory Park.”

The Park will be located at our Lodge along the banks of the Peace River.

Our project kicks off with our annual 4th of July Celebration and will hopefully be completed by the start of

2016. This is a very ambitious project and we hope you will support our efforts to give recognition to our

local veterans.

We have already received huge commitments of time and labor from many of our members; however, we

are still in need of donated materials including lumber for the projects being built by volunteers as well

as brick pavers and sand, plant materials, and various building materials.

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is a national fraternal organization dedicated to serving the

community through its charitable works. Our emphasis is on conducting youth programs, serving our vet-

erans, and doing charitable work in the community in which we live and work.

Can you help so we can continue our charitable work with veterans and kids?

Thank you

Julie Avers

Weather report for July and August, HOT HOT HOT!!! Be sure to wear a hat, light clothing, drink plenty of water and don't forget the sunscreen!!!!

On May 26th, Mary Kay Newman attended an

assembly at the High School where she presented three stu-

dents with scholarship checks from the Elkettes.

June was an exciting month! We attended the Flag ceremony with the Elks at the Douglas T Jacobsen Veterans Home on June 14th. Thank you, Elkettes, for participating in this moving ceremony.

On June 21st, Joan Cromeenes and I escorted our campers to the Elks camp in Umatilla, Florida. They were all excited and looking forward to new experi-ences. Returnees assured the newbies that they would have a great time.

Your last opportunity to purchase tickets for the beach cooler is coming to an end. The winner will be picked on July 4th!

Upcoming events for the Elkettes include our annual conference in September and a Fashion Show and Si-lent Auction in November. We thank you for support-ing us when you purchase raffle chances and attend our events. Remember, the money raised supports our many charities, scholarships, campers, and physi-cal therapy services to name a few.

Have a great summer!
