It seems no time since I was writing the last report, how time flies!

On the home front the wet weather has caused the milk cows to be housed much earlier than normal, at least the fodder situation is plentiful.

The harvest this year has proved very trying, the autumn sowing is

only 50% complete when normally it is completed by the end of October.

We have recently calved some really nice Lyner Oblique focus calves using the 4M sexed semen, surely this is the way forward?

In September we welcomed Alan Timbrell as the new Breed Manager, he has certainly hit the ground running.

The UK Dairy Day was next on the agenda, congratulations to the Tomlinson family, what a marvellous show season they are having and what a fantastic heifer Allstar Triclo Joybell is, now VG89. Thanks once again to the Young Breeders for their help preparing and presenting the animals for the show ring.

I attended the Calf Show at Peterborough, well done to all the prize winners and everyone for taking part. It was a pleasure to meet the six guests from six different countries. The World Federation International Youth Tour of the UK has been a great success thanks to Alan and all the host farms.

By the time you are reading this I will have ticked a few more club meetings and visits to breeders off my list. We are looking forward to going to the Australia World Federation conference in January which is extremely well supported by UK Ayrshire Breeders.

Angie and I would like to wish all Ayrshire people a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Finally we look forward to hosting the 2020 Conference in May, booking forms are included in the journal.

The saying must be true “time flies when you are having fun” where has the year gone, it doesn’t seem five minutes since the beginning of 2019!

It was a pleasure to meet up with the World Ayrshire Federation International Youth visitors when they visited High Mark farm where John & David gave an interesting talk and tour. The feedback from the delegates has been nothing

but positive and I must thank everyone involved in making such a memorable time for this great group of Ayrshire enthusiasts from around the world. A highlight for many was seeing Alan on the high ropes course in the Lake District, we can safely say he passed his Cumbria initiation ceremony with flying colours!!

Presidents and the new 2019/20 council met on 7th & 8th November in Garstang with a good discussion taking place on what the role of a council member involves. Council nomination forms for 2020/2021 are enclosed within the journal. Please return to the office by 23rd March 2020.

The all Britain and Ireland photographic competition is now open, please send entries to [email protected] including the date which the photograph was taken. Closing date for submitting entries is Friday 31st January.

The Presidents committee would like to remind members that the nomination of someone to receive a lifetime achievement award can be made by anyone via their club secretary. Any nominations and supporting information will be reviewed and the final decision made by the president’s committee.

As agreed at the 2018 May council meeting I will be attending the World Ayrshire Federation Conference in January 2020. I have also taken on the role of executive secretary on a temporary basis until the end of the conference after which time Alan Timbrell will take over. In addition to myself there are many delegates from the UK attending and our representatives for voting purposes will be Arthur Lawrie, Steve Bailey (in place of Colin Christophers) and Michael Howie (in place of UK breed manager). We will be nominating our next world federation representatives at our 2020 AGM.

E T Tomlinson & Son and their Sandyford herd from Loughborough are the winners of the award for 2018 and they were presented with the Haresfoot Vase at the 2019 National Ayrshire Show. A significant success in itself, however the dedication to showing from Blaise, Deborah, Evie, Millie and Annabell has meant they are the worthy recip-ients for the second consecutive year. Huge congratulations to everyone involved at Sandyford on such an achievement. Also for the second consecutive year we must commend the runners up of this prestigious award, John and Michael Hunter from Ardmore, Northern Ireland.

The Ayrshire Journal7

On a dark December day last year a group of Ayrshire breeders, some retired some just tired, met for one of their regular reunions. Although this very social ensemble gathered for a weekend of fine dining and a theatre visit, the most pressing item on the agenda was to decide on a date when the group would convene to holiday in celebration of the formation of a “syndicate” 25 years ago.

This group came about at the 1994 Conference Sale at Ewloe when seven ladies at table no.5 contributed to a fund to purchase Changue Celandine 34, a 16 month old heif-er. The founding members were Margaret Adamson (Swaites), Margaret Barr (Clochkeil), Rosemary Dickie (Knockenjig), Muriel Parker (Meikle Laught), Margaret Templeton (Car-nell), Ann Whiteford (Middle) & Barbara Young (Waterside).

The plan was to flush the animal in the hope of starting a new line in each of the herds. Although the route has deviated from the first plan, a considerable number of animals have been registered with the Society that have a direct connection with the venture. This does not include over 450 regis-tered progeny of the proven Celandine First Lord that is a product of the operation. Even after over 20 years First Lord could potentially continue to have an impact on the breed for years to come as one of his sons, Sandyford Time Lord has joined a recent list of “Future Sires”.

The Rosemary family at Knockenjig produced nine registrations and bred Raider by Dilham Dougal that boasted an impressive milk proof. The most prolific product has been at Swaites where the Margaret Ann line has now registered a 29th member. Over half of the mature descendants have classified between VG85 and EX93(2). A calf show champion and a reserve as well as a 60,000kgs cow are among them.

The Celandine Ann family at Middle now has 18 members. Some of the participants have been unable to perpetuate their seed from the exercise while good fortune has smiled more favourably on others. Although the Barbara line at Waterside, Meggie at Pocknave, Margaret at Clochkeil and Muriel at Meikle Laught left no succession all have had a tangible involvement.

The partners greatly appreciate the assistance given to the syndicate by Celandine’s breeder, Robert Stevenson. His co-operation in the early stages of this venture by allowing the heifer to join his flushing programme at Changue, and his continued interest and support were invaluable.

No one has dared to count the cost but the benefits of 25 years of fun and friendship far out-weigh the financial consideration. It surprised us all that the “silver” milestone bringing us to this Glasgow rendezvous arrived so quickly.

At the bedroom drinks party on arrival, members were invited to fill in a 2019 year planner with the dates which were inconvenient for them to be away from home. With seven couples having to be accommodated it was still somewhat of a surprise that the exercise produced only one window in early September that was suitable.

This enabled our regular Travel Consultant to be contacted while we were convened in order to ascertain which choices might fit in with our restricted timing. The option which found most favour was a Viking River Cruise from Bordeaux and the booking was duly made. Surrounding countryside in the area through which we would travel was not likely to feature any Ayrshire cows. In fact we caught sight of only a few Limousin cattle one day when we were heading into our third winery. At least we thought that was the

breed but clarity of vision was not at the optimum. However we felt sure that we would be able to consume quantities of another white liquid produced in that region and perhaps even more of a red variety.

Sadly a few days before our departure David and Rosemary Dickie had a family bereavement which prevented them from travelling. Despite the heavy hearts the group set off from Glasgow and landed in Bordeaux to experience one of the most horrendous rainstorms imaginable. Luggage was drenched resulting in some of the case contents getting wet.Within half an hour the sun came out and shone continuously for the whole trip with the temperature rising to almost 30 degrees by the end of week. During the voyage many sights were seen, many fun moments were experienced and many glasses of wine were consumed.

It has always been Syndicate policy that before the current get together finishes that the next meeting is scheduled. By the time this is being read the next meeting will have come and gone and the following one will be in the diary when we’ll drink a toast to Celandine once again.

One more incidence of the Ayrshire cow bringing people together.

equines and their germinal products.

To allow Ayrshire Cattle Society to remain a recognised breed society, we have had to adhere to these new legislations. It is also not only countries within the EU that have had to adapt to the changes in legislation, but also all countries which wish to trade their animals or germinal products with the EU. ACS have been working closely with the NBDC to fully understand the impact of the changes. We have also been working with DEFRA to ensure everything has been adhered to, whilst also making them aware of the challenges this provides.

The main changes you will notice will be:

- New double-sided certificate, one side landscape the other portrait

- A consistent layout and numbering system for the portrait side of certificates for animals in and coming into the EU

- Removal of classification stamps on certificates

- Removal of sales and transfer section on the reverse along with on-farm identification

With all this in mind NBDC has alerted the Society that there will be a price rise to registrations of £1.20, but the Council have decided to phase this rise in over the next three years with 40p to be added every year. This will

start on the 1st of January 2020 so if you need to catch up registrations and you need some help please shout.

GENOMICSAHDB are happy for us to restart our female and male testing program on Animals that are 87.5% Ayrshire and above as the base reliability is now in place

I would like to start off by saying many thanks for all the kind words of support shown to me since taking on the role of Breed Manager. I would also like to thank Claire and Lesley for their guidance in bringing me up to speed with all that happens in the office and registration

side of the Society and last but not least Duncan who has given me a lot of support and advice on some challenging matters.

Since taking over on the 1st of September its been pretty full on with the National Show and International Ayrshire Youth Tour as well as the National All Breeds All Britain Calf Show. I have visited some area’s already and hope to cover many more in the coming months and try to visit as many of your herds as possible.

JUDGING SEMINARThe next judging seminar will take place during the Society Conference by kind invitation of our President Michael Howie on Tuesday the 12th May at Morwick Farm, Acklington, Morpeth, NE65 9DG. It was decided at council to revert back to a single master judge for each ring at this event from the consensus system that has been used over the last few years. There will also be a workshop on judging calves for all who would like to join in.

NEW REGISTRATION CERTIFICATESLast year the EU bought in new legislation (EU Regulations 2016/1012 and 2017/717) regarding the standards for animal registration. This also included the roll-out of a consistent format for registration certificates and export documents, to create clearer understanding. The new legislation not only impacts on cattle, but also pig, sheep and goats,

as long as it is done with a 50K or more chip. Duncan revealed last spring in the Journal it is our advice that you use Cogent/ST Genetics to do your testing as they use a 70K chip so this will also help with the information we can gain. It may cost a little more than others but the information you will receive back will be easier for you to understand. The cost of each sample will be £29 and the Allflex Starter kit cost is £48 which includes an Applicator +10 x TSU Vials. This price excludes VAT.

CLASSIFICATIONClassification results have been on par with other years in numbers and we have seen a slight rise in scores which shows the Breed on an improving path. We are also meeting with NBDC for a workshop to look at the scoring system. Just recently we had our first VG89 scored heifer for a few years. It was our National show Champion Allstar Triclo Joybell VG89 3yrs. To my knowledge there has only been four 89-point heifers.

WORLD CONFERENCE JAN 2020Claire will be heading to Australia for the World Ayrshire Conference and has been asked to give a report on how we as a Country use our Youngsters to promote the Breed. She will be accompanied by 22 delegates from the UK and I’m sure they will have a great time and we will look forward to their feedback on their return.

BREED HERITAGEThere was a conference call earlier this year and we will be scheduling more calls through the coming months. There have been some new cows identified as for the Breed Heritage watch list. Sanderson White Rose 445 and her Skyfall daughter tracing bank to the Waxham herd and two half-sisters from the Troutbeck Burdette Jess family have been added. We know need people to Genomic test their best females to help the breed built a more reliable database for Genomic results. The more

information we can gain the higher the reliability will be. Another great Breed Heritage Mating is about to reach your Ai tanks.

BIDDESDEN HECTORBiddesden Hector enters Cattle Services from a mating that was done through Breed Heritage after Breeders asked us to supply a sire that was from trusted genetics, that was especially for a grazing system and Hector in our eyes fits this remit and will be available in sexed 4m semen. He looks a very exciting prospect with having no Nelson, Reality, Burdette, or Oblique blood in his pedigree. He is a 100% Ayrshire with a very strong cow family behind him on both sides of his pedigree.

His Dam is Baillifcourt Hortense 267 Ex93 2E by Horseclose Jubilee a son of Horseclose Einstein needs very little introduction. Hortense 267 who has been admired by many people is a very milky cow with high fat and protein averaging over 10 lactations 9,450kgs at 4.41bf and 3.45 pro and an average production index of 131 on 10 lactations which is in the top 1% of the breed. This was all achieved on a low input system which shows the quality of this animal. She was also shown very successfully in the North East of England and won many prizes at shows and in herd competitions.

His Sire is Stretton Triple Prime a Meikle Laught Triple Crown son with a very strong cow family with the last 5 generations being VG or Ex with a mixture of North American and British genetics and to top it off breeding very strong milky daughters with excellent health traits. Triple Prime’s maternal line average 11 lactation on his last four maternal generations.

When you look at Hectors pedigree the Sire and Dam are full of outstanding blood of the Ayrshire Breed and you can be sure that you will get longevity and milk from this outstanding Young Sire.

The Ayrshire Journal13

Hello everyone, Let me introduce myself to anyone who doesn’t know me. I’m Annabell Armstrong and live at Plaskettlands on the beautiful Cumbrian Solway coast. I was born and bred on dairy farm not too far away from here, and spent my youth supporting the local Young Farmers Club. My first dairy stock judging was held at The

Whitefords, Middle Farm at the age of 13. Who knew then what a huge part Ayrshire cows were to play in my later life? I met Rodney through the club and the rest as they say is history. We have been married almost 30 years and have three grown up children; Michael is 27 and works at home on the farm, he is now engaged to Megan with a wedding set for autumn of next year. Laura is 25 and works as an Occupational Therapist in Carlisle, Laura and fiancé Joe are also busy planning as they get married in May 2021. Amy is now 21, she works at Aspatria Farmers our local agricultural supplier. Her partner in crime is Jake Sayer who many of you will know from Denmans Ayrshires. They met through the Young Breeders program, attending the Young breeders gathering and Dairy Day at Telford. They are currently making plans for a visit to Australia and New Zealand in the New Year. Joe and Kathleen who many of you will know are also here with us at Plaskettlands. Always ready with advice and keen to keep us on our toes!

The family, then Strickland, founded the herd in 1938 and came to Plaskettlands in 1942. We now farm 230 acres in total. We have 85 milk cows plus followers, all calves are reared with bulls left entire and sold in the fat ring.

We don’t have our own sheep now, Geoff a local farmer will bring his sheep to winter here. He is only a mile away from us but on low lying ground that gets very wet. We are just that bit higher up and our sandy land is welcome pasture for the winter months. We still grow 5 acres of potatoes and 1 acre of vegetables that are sold on local markets and at the farm gate. 4 markets a week are done through the summer months and only 2 from November

onwards. We also advertise on Facebook and last year the week before Christmas we were busy little elves with over 100 4 stone bags to deliver to customers in the local towns.

We do a couple of shows a year. In August our local show is the Cockermouth Show, Just half an hour away from home. The exhibitors include ourselves, the Sandersons and Mattinsons. The Ayrshire Classes are the best supported dairy classes at the show. We also attend The Westmorland County Show in Kendal. The show is the biggest one day show in the country and well worth a visit if you get the chance. Just a couple of hours after leaving home we can be there with the cattle washed and settled. It’s a brilliant set up for washing and milking your cattle. All with a viewing area for inquisitive members of the public. It’s surprising how many adults have never seen a cow being milked. We even manage to draw Christine (The Westmorland Agricultural Societies Chief Executive) out of her office at midnight for a very sociable glass of port with cheese and biscuits before a couple of hours sleep before show day begins.

Spring was kind to us this year and the crops went in well, the ground was in good condition following the dry summer the year before. First job is always to get the potatoes in. We like to have the first earlies planted by the middle of March if possible. We get the seed from JBA Seed potatoes in Annan. Robert and Iain Barbour are always on hand to offer advice when needed. They quite often say that we are some of their longest standing customers having bought seed potatoes from them for a number of years. The first seed will be collected in early January then ‘Chitted’ before planting to encourage good early growth. We started selling new potatoes from the first week of June this year. All picked by hand for freshness and quality.

In the middle of October the Cumberland Club helped to host the International Youth Visit. We were asked to provide three herd visits to the Troutbeck, Sanderson and Plaskett Herds. We were very lucky with the weather with 2 dry days for the visit. The herds visits were held on the first day with lunch in the local auction which included Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding. This was enjoyed by all once we had explained what a Yorkshire pud was! We turned a few heads when we arrived in the beef selling ring but didn’t distract from the business of the day. The second day the club arranged a visit to Go Ape in Whinlatter Forest in the Lake District. The Tree Top adventure was enjoyed by all the delegates and some of our younger Cumberland Club members, some who took to it like a duck to water and for others it was a bit more challenging. We then headed off into Keswick for traditional Fish and Chips for lunch before the delegates travelled through the Lake District to Lancashire. Thank you to Lachlan, Corey, Olivia, Gabby, Julie and Iida for visiting us and of course to Alan Timbrell for being the tour guide for the week. We hope they all enjoyed their time in Cumbria and saw some memorable cows and scenery.

We usually try to get away for a few days towards the end of October once the tatties are all in and the winter barley is sown. This year we went with friends to Krakow in Poland, The trip didn’t get off to a very good start with a delay leaving Manchester then unable to land due to fog at Krakow. Flight diversion and a two and a half hour bus ride we finally checked in to our hotel. Krakow is a beautiful city and we enjoyed doing all the touristy things it had to offer. Home time and our flight was cancelled due to fog. So we ended up spending another two nights and three days in the city waiting for the next flight home. Better luck next time!

So that will bring us round to the end of 2019, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Achieving A Calf’s Genetic Potential Starts With Colostrum Management Evine Van Riemsdijk head of SCCL Europe

Mother nAture’S PerfeCt foodIt can’t be stressed enough: colostrum is mother nature’s perfect food for a calf’s best start in life. It is dense in nutritional and health supporting factors allowing the new born calf to adapt to a challeng-ing environment and to start developing into your future top producer:

• Colostral fat – the main energy source for a new born calf to generate body heath immediately after birth.• Colostral proteins – a unique source of health support to optimise the calf’s capability to perform to its best in a challenging environment. • Growth factors – the nutritional source required by a calf to start growing and developing.

ColoStruM MAnAGeMent: tArGetS And ProtoColSIn the first hours after birth it is critical that the calf receives at least 2 feedings of colostrum. Assure every calf gets what it deserves by setting targets and describing the required procedures in protocols which can be followed by the staff. Main-taining calf sheets with records on colostrum aspects can help you evaluate calf performance and discuss if targets are met or if protocols should change.

The following targets are important:

TYPE OF SYSTEM AND A SHORT BRIEF OF YOUR BUSINESS Michael - 150 Ayrshires 50 Holsteins under Brundcliffe prefix, milk recorded separately, 245 acres all grass, paddock/strip grazed weather permitting April/May to October semi TMR winter, all year round calving milk sold to Muller on liquid contract. Biomass boiler heats three houses also hot water.

Richard - We started milking in 2013. Cows came from Castern, Willhome, Stamford and Pylon mainly. We farm 1000 acres, roughly 300 acres grass the rest arable, we lamb 150 ewes in January for the Easter trade, we also run a herd of pedigree Limousins, Saltbrook.

Peter - The farm is located at over 1,000 feet above sea level and is all down to grass. Cows are grazed day and night 6 months of the year and cubicle housed during the winter. Milking is through an 8/16 herringbone parlour. Cows are trough fed silage with concentrates through the parlour, with no TMR Herd average is just over 8,000 litres from an almost 100% Ayrshire herd. Surplus stock is sold either through Leek market or direct from the farm.

Jo - We run an organic enterprise consisting of 130 pedigree pure Ayrshires, finishing 80% Ayrshire bull calves, 100 pedigree dorsets and grow approx. 40 acres of crops.

MOST CONSISTENT COW FAMILY IN YOUR HERD AND WHY? Michael - The Nellie family originating from the Stantondale herd, daughter of Stantondale King of Hearts was purchased at Uttoxeter carrying a Pant Graceful Air daughter and the family has flourished from there excelling in type, production, fertility and index.

Richard - Our most consistent cow family is the Flash Girls which originate from Stamford Ayrshires. Also the Linnets from Stamford have bred fairly consistently.

Peter - Two families stand out over the years being the Winsomes and the Ovoids. Winsomes have bred a number of high scored EX cows with great longevity and have produced a number of very successful bulls. Ovoid’s have consistently produced high type showy kinds of cows and have generated many heifer calves with now over 420 registered!

Jo - That’s a tricky one! the Ayrshire cow is so diverse...the cow family most picked out by people looking at the herd is Apple Blossoms...for the show ring its always been Cherryshines or more recently Buttermilks......for the get up and get on with the job type of cow it’s our Butterpuffs.

SIRE WHICH HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN YOUR HERD AND WHY ?Michael - In the early days of the herd Wheatrig Lena’s Commander left a lot of tremendous cows and latterly a lot of good young cows from Nellie 38 son Whitecroft Furtado having 657kg milk and a PLI 377.

Richard - The bull we have used who has the made biggest impact on our herd is Wroughton Lord Winston. Edward from Cattle Services advised us to use him when we were getting started so he has to take some of the credit for that.

Peter - Heydale Wilderness, a bull just used to run with heifers for 2 years but his daughters have excelled in both production and type. Of every heifer of his that calved they scored 100% GP or better, with 7 going EX His figures show he still has a PLI of 233 with a plus of over 700 for milk. Quite a number have already reached 60 tonne lifetime yield! Palmyra Tri Star Burdette has left a large number of very good daughters in the herd too breeding a very consistent type of cow. Duo Star Gentleman is the 3rd sire I would mention as the current crop of heifers contain a large number of standout daughters.

Jo - We have proper cows in there 8/9 lactations by Waxham each Way cows I love. Our Dudley Wood Major Daughters are proving to be hard wearing types with frame, great udder attachments and sound feet. At the younger end it’s the Devas Maverick daughters with some fantastic 2nd calvers and some just as promising heifers calved this summer. Alot of the back pedigrees go back to Killoch Propeller, Newton Grange High Noon and East Church Ambition.

AI SIRES CURRENTLY BEING USED?Michael - Sandyford Time Lord, Pam Ayrs Hawaiian, Biddesden Hector all sexed. Whitecroft Panel, Changue Furlong and natural service Whitecroft Annan.

Richard - Lyner Oblique Focus, Sandyford Time Lord, De La Plaine Blink, Swaites Dermott and Stewartry Royal Secret.

Peter - Heydale White Willow, Heydale Windstar, Whitecroft Nectar, Swaites Nickle, Sandyford Supreme, Palmyra Reagan and Remsburg. Recently Biddesden Hector and Pam Ayrs Hawaiian.

Jo - Ravenhill Victory, Whitecroft Nectar, Swaites Nickle, Lyner Oblique Focus with some Biddesden Hector and Heydale White Willow.

I have been a ruminant nutritionist for more years than I care to remember but have believed there is always something new to learn every day not just in feeding and managing dairy cows but life in general. For example I recently finished reading a book about the relationship between genetics and political beliefs where it was reported 40 % of the difference in political beliefs (eg liberal versus conservative) was down to genetics

which may seem surprising to some but if I asked a similar question to dairy farmers as to what was their best estimate of the proportion of cow performance that was down to genetics they would probably come up with a similar number !

So if we assume 40 % of cows performance is down to genetics what accounts for the other 60 %? I would love to claim it was all down to nutrition but a large proportion will be down the environment in which the cows are reared and housed and the management and stockmanship skills of the farm staff.

So a well bred Ayrshire, managed by good staff, in a well designed building has the potential to really respond to improved nutrition and I intend to focus this article on feeding for compositional yield, not just milk yield or compositional quality but both since more milk companies are tending to bias their payments towards volume and quality.

Let’s start with some general principals. Whilst we all believe that cows have a requirement for certain nutrients at specific levels of performance we also need to understand how cows respond to a change in nutrient supply not just yield alone but also milk composition. Is it economic to feed the next 1 kg of concentrates? The attached graph shows how cows typically respond to increasing concentrate supplementation – there is a positive response to yield, milk protein yield and butterfat yield but at higher levels of concentrate inputs the response in butterfat yield tapers off sooner that the other two. The shadowed in areas of the graphs indicate a range in response, so at the same level of concentrate supplementation performance can be manipulated by changing specific nutrients or nutrient balances.

Forage quality is the foundation to achieving high compositional yields, both protein and butterfat, economically. Grass silage ideally should be 70 D Value with a low acid loading. If dry it must be precision chopped, not like long chop forage wagon silage as it depresses forage dry matter intake. Longer chop silage is fine for high D, wetter silage.

We must keep in the back of our minds that cows evolved to eat grass, and unlike fermented silage, has a naturally high sugar content and no lactic acid. The Dutch make the best silage dry, high D and high in sugar but weather in the UK makes this very difficult and as we try and cut sooner for high D it can end up too wet and acidic.

Wet acidic silage is a nightmare to balance and whilst I would normally aim to supply high levels of fermentable carbohydrates in the form of

starch, in particular, I am conscious of the need to be very careful to avoid acidosis. In these more difficult circumstances I would favour maize grain over wheat, use caustic treated wheat over rolled cereals, use a buffer salt ( eg AcidBuf) and a yeast ( eg Actisaf ) and advise the feeding of some hay or chopped straw. If the farm is lucky enough to have two forage crops then partly replacing the grass silage with dryish 45 + % DM wholecrop may help solve the problem but so can purchasing in dried lucerne (eg Rumiplus).

MY THOUGHTS ON IMPROVING BUTTERFAT PRODUCTION:1. High intakes of quality silage providing plenty of effective NDF is the best starting point - high D, dryish grass silage does a great job.

2. As yields rise one has to provide more fermentable carbohydrates but the balance of starch, sugar and digestible fibre needs to alter as more concentrates are fed avoiding the oversupply of too much rapidly fermented carbohydrates. So at high feed rates one has to move from all cereals to also include some soya hulls or sugar beet feed. Fodder beet is a very useful carbohydrate source – if clean!

3. Avoid wet acidic moist feeds such as Trafford gold if the grass silage is already wet and acidic.

4. If needed reduce the acid loading by adding a live yeast and a buffer salt.

5. Fat level and type in the overall diet matter as supplementary feed levels rise – feeds that are high in unsaturated fats such as distillers grains, rape expellers and even grazed grass progressively

depress butterfat’s as more are fed.

6. The most expensive tool in the armoury, but sometimes necessary, is the use of high C 16 supplementary fats – typically fed at 250 g Butterfat Extra per day increasing butterfat percentage by up to 0.25 %

FEEDING FOR MILK PROTEIN PRODUCTION :1. If you want a one liner : Energy, energy, energy, energy source, protein quality

2. Prevent cows losing excess bodyweight. Typically herds with the highest milk protein yields have the “best” average condition score (close to 2.5) compared to those with cows that are either too thin or very variable.

3. The first group to focus on are the dry cows ideally managed in two groups - a far off and a close up group. The key task here is to maintain high dry matter intakes without oversupplying energy especially in the far off group. In the close up group the base forage diet should be topped up with 2 to 3 Kg concentrates that provide all the essential, vitamins, minerals and trace elements and also increase overall energy supply to 120 Mj per day. I want to particularly highlight the importance protein supply to the close up group and I have had some excellent responses to increasing rumen by pass protein supply and also feeding of specific rumen by pass amino acids in terms of colostrum yield and milk protein yield in early lactation. Dry cows tend to be fed low protein forages (big bale silage or silage plus chopped straw ) which can be far too low for high genetic merit cows to transition well on.

FEEDING AND MANAGING AYRSHIRES FOR MILK SOLID YIELDSCarrs Billington Chief Technical Officer, Duncan Rose offers expert advise to breeders on feeding management to maximise milk solids.BREED

TECHNICAL ADVICE

“40 % of cows

performance is down to genetics .”

Page 23: 1 The Ayrshire Journal · The Ayrshire Journal 44 Club News Ayr The Club held their Annual Calf Show at the beginning of September at Catrine House, Mauchline by kind permission of

The Ayrshire Journal23

4. During lactation the first focus should be to feed enough energy to meet cows needs for bodyweight change, milk yield and composition remembering that the milk of Ayrshires has a higher milk solids content than that of Holsteins for example so the energy required per litre of milk produced is higher. Where the energy comes from is also really important. Whilst feeding enough total energy described in terms of megajoules is one thing it is also vital to supply sufficient GLUCOGENIC energy to maximise milk protein yields which is only achieved by feeding plenty of starch. So we know feed fat for example megalac has a high megajoule content but it unfortunately has a zero glucogenic energy content in contrast to maize grain that has one of the highest glucogenic energy values. Feeding the same amount of megaloules from megalac would tend to increase butterfat yield more than from maize which would tend to increase protein yield more.

5. Since milk protein (casein) is made up of a particular balance of amino acids it should come as no surprise that, by manipulating the supply and quality of protein leaving the rumen which then alters the level of amino acids being delivered to the udder, does have an impact on milk protein yield. Grass silage contains protein but is a very poor source of rumen by pass protein with a poor balance of amino acids.

6. As yield rises it becomes progressively more important to supplement with more rumen by pass protein such as rumen protected soya ( eg AminoMax L ) and in some cases specific individual rumen protected amino acids such as methionine. These become more important if distillery products are also fed which tend to have a poor amino acid profile. The other advantage of using concentrated rumen by pass protein sources is that is also possible to meet protein requirements at lower levels of crude protein – an important environmental benefit.

Summary : From a nutritional perspective forage quality, as we all know, has a huge impact on the performance of dairy cows but as milk yield targets rise the nutrient composition of the concentrate portion of the diet has a progressively larger impact. This becomes even more pronounced as forage quality declines. To highlight this and for interest I have detailed below an example diet I was asked for by a Kenyan farmer, Lawrence Ngugi, who owns 2 Ayrshire heifers and wanted me to recommend a diet using the feeds he had available to increase milk solids yields. It’s amazing for me to see where in the world the Ayrshire breed is farmed but also being asked similar questions to those I am challenged with at home in the UK !

Milk Yield - As nutrient supply increases yield increases in a curvilinear relationship and with a law of diminishing returns. Milk composition – Protein . As nutrient supply increas-es so does milk protein concentration but gradually the response slows to a maximum then declines just before milk yield declines. The maximum yield of protein oc-curs at about the same nutrient input level as maximum milk yield. Milk compostion – Butterfat . This is different. When you first start to increase nutrient supply one gets a small increase in BF % but it soon starts to decline and then rapidly declines at high concentrate feed rates. There is however more nutritional flexibility to manipulate but-terfat than there is for milk protein.

What a great show it was with calves arriving from every country in the United Kingdom and handlers from the UK and around the world, it had a real international feeling.

For the first time ever, the UK had invited Ayrshire World Federation countries to send young delegates to join in with the UK Young Breeders, I would like to thank those members who supplied calves for our international visitors.

The first day saw the handlers put through their paces by Judge Claire Swale and Claire definitely made them work for their prizes. In the junior class it was split because of such a large entry, Kyle Scott was first and Arlo Atkins was second in the younger age class with Logan Hendrie coming out on top in his class over his twin brother David.

In the Intermediate class 13-15yrs which was the strongest class of the day, Millie Tomlinson came first very closely followed by Hollie Keenan.

The senior class 16-20yrs was won by Iida Maki from Finland with Millie Spencer finishing second and again in the mature class it had an International feel with Julie Macfarlane from Canada coming first and Jake Sayer the runner up spot. The Championship class really did make Claire think and it was her two Intermediate handlers Millie and Hollie who were very worthy Champion and Reserve and in the Honourable Mention spot was Iida Maki.

The following day saw some outstanding calves in the ring judged by Iwan Thomas of the Paith herd with the Calf born after the 01/03/19 being won by

Richard Danforth with Moathouse Skyfall Kiss. In the next class, the biggest class of the day 01/12/18 to 28/02/19 with 12 forward, it was a one two for the Beechmount herd of the McConnell family from Northern Ireland with Marie Girl 23 1st and Marie Girl 24 2nd. Sandyford Famed Clover from E T Tomlinson & Son was the victor in the 01/09/18 to 30/11/18 class and another one, two in the next class for the Denman’s herd of Jake Sayer, Supreme Lizzie 1st and Supreme Rosie 2nd. In the last class of the day another Sandyford Supreme daughter triumphed Sandyford Supreme Sea Lily owned in syndicate by E & O Wake & E T Tomlinson & Son with another of the Sea Lily Family in second, Marleycote Sea Lily 29 owned by Adam Smith.

In the Championship, Sandyford Supreme Sea Lily was tapped out giving her the advantage with her balance and strength over the reserve champion Denman’s Supreme Lizzie and she was placed over Marleycote Sea Lily 29 who was Honourable mention because of her long feminine neck and depth of rib.Thank you to Deborah Tomlinson for filling in at the last moment as our collecting steward and we are very grateful to our main sponsor National Milk Recording.

Well done to all exhibitors for a great show and to our young breeders from home and abroad you put on a fantastic show and we already look forward to next year’s show.

The Hawaii family traces its origins to the Marnum family’s Warmhill herd in Devon in the early 1970’s and can be traced back to a cow called Warmhill Diana who was served to Eyton College Boy a Pant Knighthood son to produce a daughter named Warmhill Denedola.

Denedola Intern was line bred to Calderglen Samson which was a Pant Simon x Pant Knighthood x Pant Dictator son. This mating provided the next generation Warmhill Hapsheput VG85 a 60 tonne lifetime production cow who in her fourth lactation suffered fertility issues and was served to her son Warmhill Henry V11 sired by Changue Headmaster.

In this pedigree there have been many crosses of the top sire of the time Pant Dictator and this mating son on mother gave us the cow Warmhill Miss Hawaii who had four calving with 2 sets of mixed twins. Warmhill Ann EX92 was one of the mixed twins so this family has a lucky streak connected to it as well. Warmhill Ann EX92 was also a noted show cow in her day winning many championship throughout the South West. She was by the well-known sire McCornick Nelson and reached the score of EX92 and she was bred to the bull Pam Ayrs Dreamcatcher a bull that only had three progeny but was from a strong cow family on both sides being the Melody’s from Drointon and the Miss Norma’s from Stamford.

This mating produced the highest pointed pure Ayrshire in the UK, Pam Ayrs Dream Hawaii EX 96 4E who has won many shows in her career and has a top production of just short of 10,000 kgs of milk 4.27 bf and 3.47 pro with a lifetime yield of 70,000 kgs of milk so far.

She has had many off spring with the best animal classified at the moment being Pam Ayrs Hawaii Five-0 EX93 2E by the American sire Family-AF-Ayr Poker Duncan. She has milk records of over 10,200 kgs of milk and 4.5bf and 3.4 pro and is the dam of the Lagace Ristourn son recently released by Cattle Services (Ayr) Ltd Pam Ayrs Hawaiian. Lagace Ristourn is 249 PLI and a type merit of +1.9 his milk is +306 BF +0.01% +12.1 kgs PRO +0.01% +10 kgs

He will be available in both conventional and Sexed ULTRA

4M with a PTA of 291 PLI 346kgs of milk 17.1kgs of fat and 13.1kgs of pro and positive % of fat and pro.

He is also 100% Ayrshire and has a PTA type figure of +1.2.

As we head into the winter, it seems like 2019 has flown by! Cattle Services continue to work hard to identify new bulls to add to our portfolio, although this is becoming increasingly hard with less males being registered and also many of the registered calves being similar to many bloodlines within the current line up. Having said this, 2019 has seen the release of some very in teres t ing sires that we feel offer

breeders something a little different. If you feel that you have a young calf that may offer the breed something a little different, or a family that you could help the breed, please call me.

Demand for UK genetics is at a higher point than it has been in the last 6 years. In 2019 alone, straws from UK bulls have been sent to South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Finland and Sweden. It is also very pleasing to see new countries showing an interest in our genetics with enquires coming in from Zimbabwe and Holland. This is mostly down to the website and Facebook pages; please give the Facebook page a like if you haven’t done so already.

A year after its release, we are now seeing calves being born from sexed Ultra 4M semen. With the increasing pressure from dairy companies in the UK, I feel that now is the time for us to be ahead of the game and use more sexed semen in our breeding programs. The Sexed Ultra 4M product is one of the best sexed products on the market today; breeders are seeing conception rates from the sexed ultra product that mirror conventional straws.

Cattle Services are pleased to still offer breeders the following bulls in Sexed Ultra 4M:

HEYDALE WHITE WILLOW (Hilltown Oblique x Kellcrest Iceman)

SANDYFORD TIME LORD (Celandine First Lord x Mapleburn Remington)

SWAITES DERMOTT (West Mossgiel Modern Reality x Des Prairies Potter)

PAM AYRS HAWAIIAN (Lagace Ristourn x Family-Af-Ayr Poker Duncan)

NEWS

Whilst visiting farms, the young calves by Lyner Oblique Focus really impress me - they exhibit so much length for baby calves but they also have fantastic width throughout. The Whitecroft Nectar calves are also very impressive in the calf pens; they are very deep calves with lovely bone quality. In the milking cattle, I really like how the Rosehill Manderville cows mature with age; as heifers they are not the biggest but once they start milking, they develop every year. The third calf daughters that I see are really capacious cows with a lovely quality of bone - the mammary systems are always very balanced

with great teat placement. Another sire that impresses me is Stamford High Definition, his daughters are always very balanced individuals who have nice lovely attached udders and walk on great feet and legs.

In the show ring, Cattle Services Progeny continue to perform very well. At the National Show in September, the Champion was a daughter of Sandyford Triclo – Allstar Triclo Joybell. One of the most pleasing parts of the show was the senior cow class where the first 4 cows were all sired by Cattle Services sires. The Reserve Champion heifer

Wroughton Honeycombe was also sired by a Cattle Services sire – Sandyford Supreme.

Moving on to the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show, Cattle Services daughters dominated the calf classes winning 4 out of the 5 calf classes and having the Champion (Sandyford Supreme Sea Lily), Reserve Champion (Denmans Supreme Lizzie) and Honourable Mention (Marleycote Sea Lily) calves. The Champion and Reserve calves were sired by Sandyford Supreme and the honourable mention calf was sired by Changue Stadium. Other calves that were present at the show included daughters of Cuthill Towers Buster, Hunnington Famous, Troutbeck Skyfall, Hilltown Oblique and Sandyford Triclo. Please keep up to date with what is going on with new bull releases and offers throughout the winter months.

What a great show we had this year with exhibitors from near and far with some new herds sending their stock which were ably looked after by our great team of young breeders. Judging our show this year was Gilmour Lawrie of the Brieryside herd who needs very little introduction and handled the day with great efficiency.

This year’s show was again at Telford International Centre as part of Dairy Day and I must say the organisation and facilities were second to none and anyone who has not attended this show you should put Wed 16th September 2020 in your diary.

We saw a tremendous show of heifers in our first two classes of the day. The Junior heifers there were 6 forward, with Stardust Supreme Queenie VG87 a Sandyford Supreme daughter that came out top, very closely followed by Fineview Skyfall April 2 by Troutbeck Skyfall from new exhibitors R & S Clark from Stranraer. In the senior heifers 6 forward, it was Allstar Triclo Joybell VG89 a Sandyford Triclo daughter that came top of the class with another new exhibitor to the show M & R Windel’s

Wroughton Honeycombe VG87 coming second another daughter of Sandyford Supreme. In the heifer championship Allstar Triclo Joybell was victorious with the second senior heifer Wroughton Honeycombe being placed Reserve with the Junior heifer Stardust Supreme Queenie Honourable Mention. In the Red & White heifer

in milk class our highest placed animal was Cuthill Towers Addiction Peony by Mr Ansly Addiction-P-Red. When it came to the Interbreed Allstar Triclo Joybell was very unlucky only to finish Reserve behind the Holstein as many around the ring had her winning quite easily.

Next was the junior cow in milk with 12 forward, this was the biggest class of the day and what a great advert for the breed this was with real depth across the

class. The winner was Sandyford Provider Fragrance VG88 a Richavon Provider

Daughter and in second place Hunnington Tornado Fragy VG87 only 8 days calved by Castern Tornado. Both these great cows trace back to Hunnington Fragy.

In the intermediate cow class there were 8 forward, and again what a tremendous class of cows forward all being of the highest standard with the top two

in this class taking the judge quite a bit of sorting out. Harperfield Sandy Rose EX92 by Harperfield Coral Reef was first and in a close second was Cuthill Towers Harrys Miss Blondie VG87 by Cuthill Towers Harry P.

In the Senior cow class, there were 8 forward and at the top of the class was Longwood Woodrow Sandy Rose EX by Mapleburn Woodrow and in second was Willowfields Winnie 2nd EX by West Mossgiel Modern Reality. The next class was the Red & White Cow class and our highest placed animal in this was for the second year running Beeline Texas Swan 2 a Texas Red daughter.

Always one of the most interesting classes is the Breeders group of three and this year for the third time running it went to E T Tomlinson & Son. Into the Supreme Championship and our judge asked for 1st and 2nd from the cow classes to be brought in and the Champion and Reserve Heifers, what a great spectacle of Ayrshire Breeding on display. Gilmour got down to five cows for the Supreme. In the middle of the ring he had his Champion Heifer, 1st & 2nd junior cows, 1st intermediate cow and 1st senior cow. Gilmour went through the attributes of the five finalists and decided

that his Champion was to be Allstar Triclo Joybell with Reserve Sandyford Provider Fragrance and Honourable Mention Hunnington Tornado Fragy. Three absolutely outstanding animals.

Lisa Window presented the Chris Window memorial Trophy for the Premier exhibitor of the show to E T Tomlinson & Son.

In the interbreed Allstar Triclo Joybell was tapped out Reserve Supreme Interbreed and remembering she’s just a heifer this was a real statement to the superb animal she is. Thank you to all the exhibitor’s for a fantastic show of quality animals and I’m looking forward to next year with great anticipation.

There are numerous faces I remember from my younger days , sadly many of them no longer with us. The President then, the late Mr John Patterson ( Ian ) from the famous Dilham Herd, along with the oldest surviving president of the day, Lord

Rowallan, were pictured cutting a Birthday Cake at the Centenary Dinner in Ayr.

The Dilham Herd was one of a number of herds advertising on a double page in the Centenary Journal…featuring the renowned Dilham Dame Bertha 5th Ex 90, dam of Dilham Bertha’s Commander, by Wheatrigg Lena’s Commander.

Other double page adverts included some of the well known names of today such as Lessnessock, Halmyre Urr, Harperfield, along with the Lawrie Families of Brieryside and Cuthill Towers. No longer in existence, but also providing a double page of stunning cattle were – Pant – Wheatrig - Townhead and Bankend .

An advert covering two pages was from Canada, from the Sutherland Brothers of Dunveen Farm. The words “ PAST PRESENT “ appear at the top of the advert with two contrasting pictures below. There was obviously a plan mating between the son of one cow, Round Bush Royalist, and the other, Kassy. The first picture, under the heading “Past”, is Round Bush Lilias 6 who portrays many of those characteristics the Ayrshire cow was well known for. Long and wedge shaped, looking proud with her alert natural head carriage displaying those elegant horns; along with that beautifully attached Ayrshire udder. The second, under the word “present” is Oak Ridge Bush Kassy in Canada. Her markings were a little unusual to the UK breeders back then, being speckled brown on white, but with the white face … even the white cows over here tended to have more brown on their eyes and cheeks.

The Hartley Herd, some naturally polled, whose annual sale that year comprised of some 40 heifers and 5 young bulls, also included a selection of animals from Mr A.C Woodley’s Hitcham Herd, a herd still in existence today. This joint sale of Hartley and Hitcham, was one of the many events to look forward to each year, one which would see those attending enjoying superb hospitality second to none.

Also featured are articles from other countries – Canada -Kenya – Australia – New Zealand – U.S.A. – Finland – U.S.S.R._Sweden – Czechoslovakia – Rhodesia – South Africa. New Zealand originally introduced Ayrshires in 1848, arriving by boat, and developed in the Scottish-settled province of Otago .They later spread to other areas, but were obviously demonstrating the longevity of the breed,

notably with Meadowlands May doing 12 lactations, and Willowvale Sunshine, a 20 year old, having completed 18 lactations. The cattle were fed on grass and hay, some fodder crops, but very seldom with meal concentrates….

The longevity of the breed was further portrayed by

Pitchcott Alexa by Hillhead Prince of Fortune. Only dehorned when she was 14 years old, she is pictured at 24 years of age in May 1977.

Another cow, along with her grand-daughter, spanned half of the Society’s history in their lifetime. Hillhead Nan, born in 1928, was bred by the late John Hunter of Hillhead , Mauchline. In 1947 the Hunter family moved to Pitchcott Farm, Aylesbury, Bucks., where Nan lived until her death

in 1956. Interest in this old cow heightened through the Ministry at Aylesbury, who became aware of her age through their attestation scheme. As Nan reached later life she developed a following in many countries, particularly in Japan. The Japanese sent over a delegation of 20 to visit her when she was 27 years old and nearing the end of her career. Nan’s diet was a boiling of hashie and chaff and her bodyweight never rose above 8 ¾ cwt. The longest any of her daughters lived was to the age of 25 or 26. In 1956 Mr R.P. Hunter moved from Pitchcott to Galley Lane Farm, Bletchley, and with him took a grand-daughter of Nan’s, Pitchcott Alexa who was then a heifer-in-milk. The cow was still in Mr Hunter’s herd in 1977!

Whilst on this topic, in the 1961 Autumn issue of the Ayrshire Journal, there is mention of a bull, “Holton Umpire”. He was born in 1944, and in the possession of Arbigland Farms, Kirkbean, Dumfries, and was still working at the age of 17 years.

Ayrshires were in the limelight at the shows this year for the following - the Supreme Individual Championship at

the London dairy Show and Dairy Event, the Bledisloe team members, pairs winning the Burke Trophy at the

Royal and the Farming News Trophy at the Royal Highland. One cow to mention, who won the “unique treble” by winning the Champion at Ayr, the Royal Highland and the Royal Show was Low Milton Dorothy, sired by Bargower Showpiece…a real beauty.

Another cow in the journal who, in my opinion, makes a great pair with Dorothy, features in the Pant double page advert. She is the cow who featured on the leaflet, demonstrating the points we looked for in the “perfect” Ayrshire cow….none other than the beautiful Pant Treasure 6th, sired by Pant Knighthood…I’d love to have a field full of cows like these two!

With a total of 192 pages featuring many other beautiful Ayrshire pictures, many with family names we still see today, showing how important these great cow families are, I can only briefly share a few of its items. I would recommend to anyone who has never seen the issue, to try to borrow a copy…..such a great read!

We had six countries send delegates to the UK tour which started in Northern Ireland on Saturday 12th October. The delegates that attended were Lachlan Forster from Australia, Iida Maki from Finland, Olivia Engstrom from Sweden, Gabrielle Steiner from New Zealand, Corey Jodrey from the USA and Julie Macfarlane from Canada.

On the first day we visited four outstanding herds. The Beechmount herd of the McConnell family, The Grove herd of the Gordon family, The Ardmore herd of the Hunter Family and The Ravenhill herd of the Suffern Family and I must say we saw to many great cows to single any out. That evening we had a social evening with the Ulster Ayrshire Breeders Club.

The second day we visited the King families Kirkinriola herd and we were also shown around their Free-Range Egg production facility. It was then on to some local sightseeing and we visited the well-known attraction in the North of the island namely the Giants Causeway which as usual was wet and windy.

Day three saw us travel to Scotland and for some of the delegates it was their first ever sailing on a boat something as an island person we take for granted. In Scotland we visited the herds of the Watson families, High Mark herd and the McGarva Family’s Horseclose Herd with an overnight stay in Gretna. No marriages took place in Gretna but friendships were being made. Day four saw the group tour three more herds this time in Cumbria at the Mattinson family’s Troutbeck herd, the Sanderson families Sanderson herd and the Armstrong’s Plaskett herd. During the evening, there was a get together with the Cumberland Ayrshire Breeders Club.

On day five we were joined by young breeders from the Cumberland Club and it was a day without cows, we visited the outdoor activity centre in Keswick for a morning of walking through the trees and zip wiring back to the ground. All the delegates enjoyed this apart from the oldest namely the bus driver who had multiple heart failures.

Day six saw us visit three more herds, first was the Seedall’s Jamara Herd, the Patrick’s Whitegate herd and the Needham’s Bradnop herd and again to many great cows to single out but daughters of great interest were by Hunnington Famous, Troutbeck Skyfall and Swaites Nickle. That evening there was a social event in Buxton organised by the Derbyshire Ayrshire Club. It took the format of Pig Racing and the delegates raced against each other with America being victorious.

On day seven we visited three farms, the Berresford’s Heydale herd, the Broadley’s Whitecroft herd and the Harris’s Alkmonton herd. The evening was spent at the All Breeds All Britain calf show clipping and training calves for the weekend show. I would like to thank all those breeders that were good enough to supply calves for the delegates to use.

On day eight the delegates took part in the calf handling competition with all delegates competing in their age groups with some standout performances from the delegates. Iida and Julie reached the Championship and Iida was pulled into the honourable mention position.

On Day nine it was the calf show and again all the delegates showed their calves at a very high standard, Corey was star delegate with his calf Denmans Supreme Lizzy being placed Reserve Champion Calf. There was a few tears shed when the final stop of Heathrow airport was reached!

It was a real honour meeting and taking these delegates around the UK, each country represented should be proud of the people who they sent on the trip as they were a true credit to the world Ayrshire family.

Thank you to all the host farms and clubs for organising social events, without your support we simply could not have hosted such a wonderful experience for our delegates. I would also like to thank sponsors Cattle Services (AYR) Ltd who provided hoodies for our delegates and the Dumfries and district Ayrshire breeders club who donated funds towards the cost of the hire of the mini bus.

BVD carries a big price tag, yet accurate testing and readily available vaccines makes it easy to control and eradicate. And the benefits to herd health and productivity are unquestionable.

Newly introduced Red Tractor standards for dairy farms, that specify that units must demonstrate their commitment to actions to eradicate BVD in their herds are an added incentive.

“We’re all too aware of the effect that BVD has on cow fertility,” says NMR veterinary adviser Karen Bond. “But the effect on calf health can be just as devastating, with scours and pneumonia more prevalent and harder to treat.”

In fact, improved calf health is one of the first benefits producers see when they start implementing a BVD control plan. “Once persistently infected (PIs) calves are removed from a herd, producers will see overall calf health improve with less cases of disease, lower treatment costs and less ad hoc labour demands. And in the long run, a more robust crop of calves will make for more productive cows.”

Weeding out PIs at a young age is now straight forward through the tag-and-test system. “It can be part of routine management,” adds Mrs Bond. “As you tag the calf soon after birth, you take a tissue sample from the ear for BVD testing. Results will be back within a week and any PIs can be removed before they can do too much damage.”

Overall, the sums attached to BVD control stack up. “We calculate that for every £1 spent on BVD eradication, producers will see £10 worth of benefit in healthier calves and more productive and fertile cows. There is a better return on investment compared to the cost of tackling many other cattle diseases.”

North Yorkshire dairy producer Richard Danforth has been testing all newborn calves for BVD on his 160-cow herd for the past three years. Despite not having any PIs detected, he still wants the assurance – for himself and any buyers of his stock – that the herd is BVD clear.

Richard and his sons, James and Ben, run the mixed arable and livestock farm near Tadcaster. His passion for livestock, and especially dairy, has seen him develop the Richmark Holstein herd and set up the 60-cow Moathouse Ayrshire herd. A keen pedigree dairy – and sheep – enthusiast, James scooped a first prize in the recent All Breeds All Britain Calf Show 2019 with Moathouse Skyfall Kiss; a heifer calf born in March 2019.

Aside from their interest in cow families and showing, the dairy herd at Walton Lodge Farm achieves good performance with the Holsteins averaging 9,500kg and the Ayrshires 8,200kg of milk on a summer grazing and winter housed system and twice a day milking. The slightly lower yields seen in the Ayrshires is countered by their better milk quality and longevity. Both breeds average a somatic cell count of 120,000/ml.

“We want a herd of healthy, high performance cows,” says Richard. “Taking a proactive approach to herd management and including disease testing as routine is part of this – we try and do our best.”An all year round calving herd, Richard uses Nordic Star Tag and Test on all claves within a few days of birth and should there be any PIs detected, he would remove them to ensure calf health is maintained.

“One of the main advantages of the Nordic Tag and Test service is the simple ordering system through a dedicated phone line or on-line,” says NMR manager in the north Angela Lockwood.

“This, and the fact that it’s a pre-paid service with all the packaging for returning samples arriving with the tags, appeals to busy farmers – it’s a one stop shop and there are options for getting

results – either by email, fax, post or directly on to the Herd Companion web site. There’s always the back-up of field staff too if any help is needed.”

The same straight-forward approach is taken for Johne’s disease testing by Richard. All cows are quarterly screened through NMR’s HerdWise service, which uses the milk sample taken for standard milk recording.

The Darnforth’s herd is mainly closed but Richard bought a few Ayrshire heifers two years ago to start new families. “I am very cautious though. Ideally, I like to see proof that they’ve tested the herd for key disease like

BVD and Johne’s and there’s low risk of infection.

“You have to be responsible and cautious. We want to keep our own herd as disease-free as possible, and we sell a few heifers sometimes, so we don’t want to ruin our reputation.”

nMr is encouraging producers to adopt robust testing schemes to support red tractor’s new standards for endemic disease control, launched in october 2019.

All red tractor dairy farms, which account for around 97% of uK units, must demonstrate their commitment for actions to eradicate BVd in their herds and are now required to engage with the national Johne’s Manage-ment Plan (nJMP) and have a declaration signed by a

BCVA-accredited Johne’s vet.

the CheCs-approved BVd herdCheck from nMr utilises bulk-milk virus testing, young stock screens, and/or

tag-and test to provide all the information needed to eradicate BVd and to monitor your herd to make sure it

doesn’t return.

On to the Supreme championship and four of the Interbreed Judges gave Allstar Triclo Joybell maximum score for her then to be crowned Supreme Interbreed Champion at this very prestigious event. All in all, the Ayrshire breed had a Stella day.

Agriscot ShowIt was another fantastic show which was the 25th year the show had been running. Judging all breeds was Selwyn Donald from New Zealand who displayed confidence and exuberance throughout the day. The champion heifer was Allstar Triclo Joybell and in reserve, Hunnington Reality Bella on her first outing. Allstar Triclo Joybell went on to be placed reserve in the super heifer competition.

In the largest class of the day the second calver’s, Allstar Provider Honesty won 1st prize, followed by Morwick Kirsty 11 in 2nd place. The third calver class saw the Battle of the Lawrie’s with Cuthill Towers Harry’s Miss Blondie being placed 1st over Brieryside Respect Swan 2 in 2nd. The senior cows showed a strong class with Sandyford Dark Hester 2 the winner and Hunnington Lily 18th being placed 2nd.

In the championship there were 6 great cows to choose from and it was Allstar Provider Honesty from ET Tomlinson & Son & I Wilson who was tapped out champion with Cuthill Towers Harry’s Miss Blondie from A&S Lawrie in Reserve and Sandyford Dark Hester 2, ET Tomlinson & Son in Honourable Mention. Another memorable show with fantastic quality on display all down the line and a great spectacle for the breed.

DevonAfter a very busy year of young breeders, herd visits and show-ing, the club has had a quieter time this last few months. The herds competition at the end of August, went smoothly and we thoroughly enjoyed welcoming Steve Bailey as our Judge. The pinnacle of the year has been the annual meal at the end of November which incorporates the herd competition results and presentations. Look out for results and photographs in the next journal. Lastly but by no means least, two of our Devon members tied the knot this year. We finish off this year’s round up with a sunny photo of a perfect day, congratulations again to Chris, Connie and Sophie!

UlsterIt is hard to believe we have left the summer months behind and are now well into Autumn. The winners of the overall prizes and varying categories from our annual herds competition were announced at the Stockjudging evening which was held at the King family farm, Kirkinriola, Ballymena, where, as usual, we were made very wel-come. We were extremely well fed and watered thanks to Jacqueline King and her team. Meanwhile Martin, Amy and Jack were busy set-ting up a rather unusual pen for one of the stock judging classes - I am pretty sure it was the first time we had to judge a pen of calves that included an Ayrshire, Jersey, Holstein and Shorthorn! It certainly led to some head scratching and debate, but it was good fun and certainly different!!

The top honours this year went to John and Caroline Suffern’s Raven-hill herd who were first in the large Herd category and top overall Herd. The top small herd went to Raymond Stewart’s Fortified Herd, congratulations to all the winners, it is hard work entering these competitions and that does not go unnoticed. We are very grateful to our sponsors Danske Bank and AI Services, without whom we could not run this event.

In September we had our annual Northern Ireland Dairy Calf Show, we must congratulate our Champions Robert and Caroline McConnell with their calf Beechmount Marie Girl 24, R & M King were Reserve with Kirkinriola HF Shona, Honourable Mention went to Robert and Caroline McConnell with Beechmount Marie Girl 23. It was a great day for Robert and Caroline, and well done to all.

Champion Handler was Jess Hall and Reserve Champion was Cam-eron Carson, competition was very close, but Jess’s experience pre-vailed. It was great to see so many young breeders showing and bodes well for the future of the Club.

Judge Iwan Thomas was very impressed with the quality of calves shown and we thank him very much for doing such a professional job and taking time to talk to the young handlers and exhibitors. His interest and advice was very much appreciated.

In early October we had the pleasure of welcoming Young Breeders from across the Globe to our Club. Ably escorted by Alan Timbrell they enjoyed Herd visits to Beechmount, Grove, Ravenhill, Ardmore and Kirkinriola herds where they got a chance to see how we farm in Ulster. On Saturday night some of our young members (and older members||) joined them for Dinner, and a good night was had by all.

Club News

StaffordshireThe 66th Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 31st October at the Shoulder of Mutton, Osmaston, Nr Ashbourne. Tom Ikin was elected as new president of the club, taking over from Michael Needham.

After the formalities of the meeting chaired by Chris Adams of the Tessvale herd, Michael Broadley gave a very interesting presentation on his trip to Kenya where he had judged the National Ayrshire show. As usual, members enjoyed light refreshments to round off a good social evening.

They were a lovely group of young people and it was a pleasure to welcome them.

We have also had our first Club Meeting of the season and we had a most enjoyable talk by Martin King on his recent visit to the ‘Floating Farm’ in Holland, a very different concept and way of farming. Until next time, may I wish you all a very Happy Christ-mas and peaceful New Year from all at the Ulster Club.

Whilst the International youngsters were in the area we hosted a Pig race which went down a storm with 11 races being held due to high demand for pigs! Everyone had a really enjoyable evening and the funds raised will go towards the Alzhimers society, Dementia UK and 2022 conference. The champion pig Jocky of the evening was Michael Broadley.

WigtownshireWe have had a busy summer with our local shows and then our Autumn Herds competition and also our chairman John Watson from High Mark Farm had a visit from the Ayrshire International Young Breeders in October. It was sad to see the dispersal sale of the Stevenson’s Ayrshire Herd from Kirminnoch Farm Dunragit, Stranraer we wish the family all the best for the future. We have also had members travelling further afield than usual, Allan Clark from Fineview was delighted to get second prize in the junior Ayrshire heif-er class at the national Ayrshire show, held at UK Dairy Day. With Fineview Skyfall April 2. He thanks the Young Breeders and David Watson for looking after his heifer. She was looking superb.

Stranraer show took place at the end of July where Allan Clark from Finev-iew took home the Ayrshire Champion and the Services from East Knock-brex went Reserve Ayrshire Champion. Allan then went to Wigtown show the week after where he took home champion Ayrshire. It was great to see members turn out such a great amount of quality Ayrshire Cattle at a local show!

In September we held our Autumn Herds competition. Judge Robin Tem-pleton from Pocknave Hurlford had his work cut out as usual. We dodged the showers and then met for a meal and results at the Craignelder Hotel Stranraer. Well done to all who took part below are the results -

PRODUCTION AWARDS

North West It with great sadness and regret we announce the death of our Club Secretary Margaret Gregson. Margaret died suddenly but peacefully on 3rd October 2019 at the family home - Slate Farm, Mawdesley. Margaret held the post of Club Secretary for the North West Ayrshire Breeders for approximately 20 years, she maintained the duties with a calm and faultless way and will be extremely hard to replace. Margaret was the wife of the Late John Gregson with which they had 3 children Jan, Carole and John Jnr and a loving Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt and Friend to many. Including the Local Young Farmers (after spending many an even-ing visiting Slate Farm for different and numerous events) of whom many attended Margaret funeral

Although Margaret came from a none farming background, upon meeting John she moulded into the daily grind of the farming world, although Margaret was never involved in the milking of the cows, she did do the bottling of the milk that they supplied to the local retailers. Margaret’s brother Colin worked alongside John on the farm and can relate many stories of Margaret being the main bailer and tractor driver when bringing back Straw bales from the

Moss at Ormskirk late at night. It would be fair to say that Margaret and John founded the Mawdesley Herd of Pedigree Ayrshires, although Johns family ini-tially farmed Com-mercial Cows. They owned the famous Bull Pant Wizard that made a sud-

den impression on the Ayrshire Breed in the 1980’s. Pant Wizard was pur-chased privately from the Rennie Family for little money. He did not become prominent until he was 10 years old when 2 cows where exhibited at the Scot-tish Winter Fair in 1981. The rest is now history! It is maybe a small coinci-dence that Pant Wizard sired a Heifer calf born in October 2019. An unknown Bull in an unknown Herd…could it happen today ?
