DEFINITION OF GRAIN The Hebrew word for barley is sehoraw. Strong’s Concordance: feminine form= “plant,” and masculine form =“grain.” Bar is another word for grain. In Gen. 41:35 and 49 Joseph gathered grain in preparation for the coming famine. The King James Version translates it “corn,” but this was not corn in the modern sense of the word, for Egypt did not grow corn. Corn is an old English word for grain in general, but in modern times the word has acquired a more specific definition and refers to a specific grain. Bar, or “grain,” may possibly be the root of our modern word for barley. Bar has other meanings: SON, in the sense of an heir. For example, Barabbas (John 18:40) means “son of the father,” and Barnabas means “son of consolation” (Acts 4:36).

Josephus in Antiquities, VIII, xiii, 2 states the following:"Now Menander (A Greek playwriter 3 centuries earlier) mentions this drought [of Elijah] in his account of the acts of Ethbaal, king of the Tyrians [and the father of Jezebel, Ahab's wife], where he says thus: 'Under him, there was a want of rain from the month Hyperberetaeus till the month Hyperberetaeus (i.e. Tishri---the 7th month!) of the year following; (one year?-no an error) but when he made supplications, there came great thunders. This Ethbaal built the city Botrys, in Phoenicia,and the city Auza, in Libya.' Consider this: 7 of Elijah’s 8 miracles were answered immediately. Why would he have to pray 7 times in one day then? Did the 7 times plus the day of heavy rain actually take place over 8 days? Do we really know? NO. Does it appear plausible? YES.

Dr. Bullinger (Bible Commenter) comments on this passage in his marginal notes in The Companion Bible. He tells us that the Greek word "exanastasis ek nekron" means OUT-RESURRECTION FROM AMONG THE DEAD. He says that the normal term used is simply "anastasis nekron," which is the resurrection of the dead--meaning all of the dead.
