1. The Galatians reception of the Spirit• (ESV) 1 O foolish

Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

• "I believe part of the problem is our tendency to give an unbeliever just enough of the gospel to get him or her to pray a prayer to accept Christ. Then we immediately put the gospel on the shelf so to speak, and go on to the duties of discipleship"

• (ESV) 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith—

• John 5: 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

29

False gospels often please people

• For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ

Living by faith the Example from Abraham

45

• (ESV) 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? 7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith

46

(ESV) 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

The futility of the lawDeuteronomy 27-28

53

• Gal3: 10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them

54

• (ESV) 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written,

55

• (ESV) Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith

66

Why curse?• Gal3: 10 For all who rely on works of

the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them

Deut 27:6 Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this

law by doing them.

Why a curse?

68

Why legalism• Romans 10 :1 Brothers, my heart's desire

and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes

The great exchange• 13 Christ redeemed us from the

The content of the gospel

• (ESV) 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Cor 5:21

He did not become sinful no more as if we became righteous but he was treated as if he was sin and we were treated as righteous even though we are sinful

78

The great exchange• 13 Christ redeemed us from the

curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
