The living parts of an ecosystem are known as the Biotic Factors.

The non-living parts of an ecosystem are known as the Abiotic Factors.

The Two Parts of an EcosystemThe biotic factors of an ecosystem consists of all the living organisms that live together and interact with one another.

The abiotic factors of an ecosystem includes all the nonliving factors that affect the living organisms.

Examples: air, water, soil, light, and temperature

Examples:

plants animals

temperature Sun soil water

TemperatureTemperature

Temperature affects the types of plants that are available for food and shelter.

SunlightSunlight• The strength and the amount of

sunlight determine the plants that can live in an ecosystem

• Sunlight is a factor in oceans also, photosynthetic organisms grow only in the first 100 meters of depth

Soil

Soil is a mixture of very small rock and mineral particles

Organisms residing within the soil breakdown the remains of dead plants and animals.

Water• All living things need water

to carry out the processes of life

• Ecosystems that have a lot of available water can support a large number of plants and animals.

Assignment—In Class1. What is ecology?2. What is an ecosystem?3. Name the two parts of an

ecosystem.4. List four abiotic factors that can

effect an ecosystem.5. Draw a diagram of an ecosystem

near where you live. Label the factors biotic and abiotic.

Archimedes• Archimedes was a Greek mathematician,

physicist, engineer, astronomer and an inventor. His contributions have been valuable in several fields, however there are some specific inventions, which have popularized him. Some of his famous inventions include the Golden Crown theory, which was used to determine the volume of objects, the Archimedes screw which was developed in order to remove the bilge water and was nothing but a device that included a revolving screw-shaped blade inside a cylinder.

• The Archimedes screw was turned by hand and could generally be used to transfer water from a low-lying body of water into an irrigation canal. Till date, the Archimedes screw is use for pumping liquids
