A Famous “Problem Passage”1 Timothy 2:9-12 2:9  Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, 10  but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. 11  A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12  But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.

1 Timothy 2:13-152:13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 But women will be preserved [lit: “Saved”] through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

1 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)  Notwithstanding she shall be

saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

Tertullian to women: “Are you ignorant that you are an Eve? The sentence of God still lives upon your sex even in this present age, and of necessity the guilt lives on too. You are the devil’s gateway, you are the unsealer of that tree, you are the first destroyer of divine law, you are she who persuaded him whom the devil was unwilling to attack directly.”

1 Timothy 5:1-2 5:1  Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

We suggest that 1 Timothy 2:13-14 is concerned not with laying the blame on women but with a strong repudiation of a popular false teaching which glorified Eve and the serpent. Kroeger and Kroeger, I Suffer Not a Woman: Rethinking I Timothy 2:11-15 in Light of Ancient Evidence
