This has been a very busy week both in and out of school. Last weekend saw a number of our swimmers giving a very strong showing at the IAPS National Swimming Championships, and our Choir were involved in a fabulous

performance of Britten’s St Nicholas at St Mary’s Church in Bridgwater on Saturday night. We had further entertainment from our musical groups and ensembles on Monday

evening as we were transported back in time in a concert entitled Vibrant Vibes of the 60s and 70s. Well done to all the performers. Finally, we look forward to welcoming back our Year 5 tourists who seem to have had a wonderful time exploring the sights and sounds of Cornwall. Have a good weekend.

Musician of the Week May 8th - 2017

This week's Musician of the Week goes to Kate Blackmore-Greasley. In Saturday evening's concert with the Bridgwater Choral Society concert Kate sang the part of the young St Nicolas. She was an amazing ambassador for the school. Her singing was pure and it was a cool, calm and assured performance under considerable pressure. Brilliant, Kate. Well done and thank you!

where they visited some very popular hotspots.

They stopped off at the Eden Project, where they learnt all about the importance of rainforests, as well as Land's End - the most westerly point on mainland Cornwall and England.

Check back next week to read a full review of the trip and to see more photos of what the pupils have been up to!

Students shine at St Nicolas concertMr

Baker and Mrs Hornsby would like to congratulate all the children who took part in the performance of “St Nicolas” in Bridgwater on Saturday 6th May. “St Nicolas” is a piece by one of this country’s most famous and prominent composers of the previous century.

His music is exciting but also very challenging. Our children proved themselves to be up to the mark, singing their hearts out to a packed church and really adding a fresh musical flavour to the evening concert, which included a large choir (Bridgwater Choral Society) and orchestra. Many of us loved being so close to the action, enjoying every rumble of the kettle drums and smash of the cymbals, to say nothing of the beautiful harps and string sections.

Not only did our young singers perform with confidence and conviction on the day of the performance, but had they spent many lunch breaks and afternoons rehearsing this difficult but dramatic and fun piece of music. On the day of the performance, we were all treated to a splendid picnic tea in order to boost our energy for the performance (provided by the Bridgwater Choral Society singers). The children presented themselves immaculately, dressed in their Choir Robes, and sang with gusto, representing the school excellently. Giving up a Saturday afternoon and evening for a

major musical project is no mean feat, so we are very proud of the children and grateful to all parents for their support, many of whom came to attend the performance. Kate Blackmore-Greasley was a soloist, singing the part of the young St Nicolas, so a special congratulation to her for her cool, calm, and assured performance under some considerable pressure. Well done also to Matilda Clarke, Simone Gerontis, and Esme Hallworth for the section they had to perform on their own with the orchestra. Thank you to all for tremendous effort and commitment towards a stunning performance.

Congratulations to the following students who all performed wonderfully:

A busy week for Thone HouseIt was wonderful to see so many of Thone House

participating in the ‘Vibrant Vibes of the 60’s and 70’s’ Concert on Monday. It certainly made for a positive start to the week, having had a great Exeat weekend.

The concert aside, Thone have enjoyed pop lacrosse, cricket, swimming, cookery, Capture the Flag, making fairy gardens and birthday celebrations. Currently, revision is also a key part to our evening routine and it is wonderful to see the children supporting each other and sharing resources and

ideas.

As we look ahead to the weekend, Thone are going to enjoy ‘Forest Fun’ and ‘Shorts and Shades’.

Should you have any enquiries regarding Thone and are interested in being a part of the experience, email [email protected].

THIS WEEK'S SPORTCalling all netball mums!

Some of the TPS parents are in a summer netball league and in need of a few more players to bolster their squad. The summer league takes place on a Wednesday night at Taunton Vale. The games start times vary between 6pm and 8pm. This is a great way to meet other parents of pupils at TPS and a good way of keeping fit whilst having lots of fun. So if you used to enjoy netball at school and want to show your children how it is done then please get in contact with me ([email protected]). I will then forward information on to the parent who runs the team.

U13B CRICKET MATCH CANCELLED

The TPS U13B cricket match is cancelled on Saturday as Colstons could not raise a B team to travel.

For match reports and latest fixtures parents are reminded to check out the School Sports Website.

National Hockey FinalsToday the U13 boys are representing the South

West in the National Hockey finals in Nottingham. They have reached this stage by winning the Somerset County Cup and then finishing runners up in the South West round. Information on how the team played will be in next week's Courier.

COUNTY SUCCESSA number of our pupils have gained selection to the

Somerset County cricket squad for the summer season. More information to follow next week.

U11 Rounders v Perrott HillA beautiful afternoon welcomed us to the equally

beautiful fields of Perrott Hill for our third Rounders match of the season. Having struggled on our first outing with our batting against Blundell's, we were improved against West Buckland coming out victorious on a very cold day. Now we needed to show the skills we have been focusing on, such as our fielding and again our batting against Perrott Hill. We won the toss and chose to field. We played reasonably well although being a little slow to get into the game, giving a few half rounders away due to not making the right decision on where to throw to. Perrott scored a credible six and we set out to beat their score or at least match it. Some steady scoring saw us gaining half rounders and a few full rounders. We managed to reach the six we needed. Fielding for our second time, Perrott were quick to capitalise on our lack of accuracy with our throws and weakness in catching cleanly. It was frustrating to watch as I know the girls are capable of much more. Perrott carved out a lead of ten and a half rounders, the girls agreed that they had let themselves down and set themselves a huge task to win the match. To their credit, they played with more passion and particular credit to Elle who scored on every one of her bats in the second innings. We ended the match on sixteen with Perrott piping us by just a half of a rounder. Our group target needs to be consistency, we need to be more passionate and support each other when fielding, displaying the skills that are learnt and displayed in lessons.

Last Friday, 14 TPS swimmers travelled to Crawley ready for the National IAPS Swimming Finals the next day. Following our overnight stay, the boys headed to the pool early on Saturday morning. Our U13 Medley Relay team were first to race, finishing 12th nationally. Next up were our individual boys swimmers:

Tom Houghton-King finished 13th in the U13 50m backstroke. Harrison Barrett finished 10th in the U13 50m freestyle. Oliver Heard finished an amazing 2nd with a time of 31.87 in the 50m backstroke. Well done Ollie, second fastest in the country!

In the afternoon, it was the girls turn. The U10 Medley Relay team were first to swim, unfortunately they were disqualified for a technical stroke error but all four girls swam very well. The U13 Medley Relay team finished a very

impressive 6th place nationally. These girls also qualified for the Freestyle Relay, finishing in 9th place. In their individual races:

Sofia Johnson finished 9th in the U10 25m breastroke. Leila Fisher finished 9th in the U13 50m backstroke. Sophia Wilson finished 9th in the U13 50m breastroke. Macey Barrett finished 13th in the U12 50m freestyle. Hetty James finished a brilliant 4th in the U13 50m freestyle with a time of 29.15 (breaking the 30 second mark for the first time!). Well done Hetty, a day when you definitely rose to the occasion.

These are all excellent results on a national level – well done TPS swimmers.
