Setting Up the Equipment

1. Connect the speed gun and the Ipaq with the Ultralyte cable

2. Turn on the speed gun by pulling the trigger

3. To set the gun to test for speed, push the blue button located on the top right of the machine titled “Speed Mode”

• The screen should look like this

Setting Up the Ipaq

1. Make sure the Ipaq is charged before using or bringing out to the field

2. Turn on the Ipaq by pressing the power button located on the top right.

3. Using the stylus, do the following:1. Click Start, located in top left corner2. Click Programs3. Click File Explorer4. Click SpeedStat5. Click Continue

Note: You will need to make sure the Ipaq doesn’t go to sleep while collecting data. The Ipaq is set by default to turn off after 1 minute. To check and/or change this setting: Click Start ->Settings->System->Power->Advanced. Uncheck the “On battery power” box that reads “Turn off device if not used for”.

Setting Up SpeedStat

To Start a New File:1. Click Collect2. Using the stylus and keyboard at the bottom of

the screen, enter a logical file name, location, and operator

3. Set speed limit to 1 mph (the program will not record anything below the speed limit)

4. Click Start• The Ipaq will now collect all data successfully

executed and log in file name5. To end data collection, click Stop

Collecting DataOnce SpeedStat is running and a new file is created:1. Press the trigger and look through the view finder. A red dot should

appear. This is the aiming point.

2. Aim the red dot at an on-coming vehicle.

3. Pull the trigger. • If successful, a pleasant beep will sound and a red number, the speed of

that vehicle, will be displayed in the viewfinder. • If unsuccessful, a cacophonous beep will sound and a red letter E

followed by a number will be displayed in the viewfinder. This vehicle will not have an entry on the file.

4. Repeat as often as necessary

Viewing the Data

• To view the collected information: Click File->Summary

• This can also be accessed from the main SpeedStat screen. Click Open, click on the file you created, and click Open again

• Note: File can no longer be collecting to do this. Hit Stop.

• To connect the Ipaq to the PC*:• Place Ipaq in the Ipaq base.• Make sure Ipaq is turned on.• Plug the base’s USB plug into a USB receiver in the laptop/PC. An

ActiveSync screen should automatically pop up. If not, load the program through the computers Start menu.

• Click the Guest Partnership bubble and click Next.

*Microsoft ActiveSync must be installed for this to work

Opening the Data in Notepad1. Click Explore on the next screen that pops

up in Microsoft ActiveSync.2. Click My Pocket PC3. Click iPAQ File Store4. Click SS Data5. Find your file. Right-click on this file, click

Cut.6. Right-Click and Paste in folder of your

choice.7. Double-Click on this file.

• This will give you a notepaddocument with the date, time, speed, and distance of each vehicle you tested

8. You can delete old unused files from the Ipaq

Opening the Data in Excel1. Click Explore on the next screen that pops up

in Microsoft ActiveSync.

2. Click My Pocket PC

3. Click My Documents

4. Click My SS Reports

5. Find your file. Right-click on this file, click Cut.

6. Right-Click and Paste in folder of your choice.

7. Double-Click on this file.

8. You can delete old unused files from the Ipaq

Your data is presented on an Excel spreadsheet. It contains all the information stored from the file on the Ipaq. You have now been walked through gathering car speed data and putting it on an excel chart.
