Dear Member and Friend of Baden UMC:

People often say, “I just want to be happy”. And it’s normal to want to be happy in our relationships. Yet the fact remains that every relationship has its ups and downs. Even the best of relationships have difficult moments. That’s why I want to share with you something that is far better than happiness. It is joy. You may wonder, isn’t joy and happiness one in the same? What’s the difference? Let me give you the definition of joy:

“JOY” is the positive confidence that comes from knowing and trusting God, regardless of circumstances. On the other hand, happiness depends on something happening. It is something external while joy is internal and based on Christ Jesus.

Did you know that giving can cultivate joy in your life? Giving is LOVE! In fact, we cannot love without giving or give without loving. Basically, when we focus on giving in a relationship, we are most like God. “There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.” (Acts 20:35) Giving is the first key to enjoying your relationships because we’re focusing on someone else instead of ourselves. In fact, love is based on giving.

The sad truth is that the “what’s in it for me attitude” prevails in society. We are so caught up in getting what we feel we deserve that we forget about giving. Then we wonder why there are so many poor relationships today. It’s because our focus is on the wrong things.

Many times after we’re in a relationship, we Continued on page 4

Healing Services:The first Wednesday of each month the Pastor and Donna Muders lead a healing service in the Eaton Chapel. The service begins at 7:00 P.M. and lasts about 15-20 minutes. The following description about the healing service has been adapted from the United Methodist Book of Worship:

The Bible strongly affirms ministries of spiritual healing. The root word healing in New Testament Greek, sozo, is the same as that of salvation and wholeness. Spiritual healing is God’s work of offering persons balance, harmony, and wholeness of body, mind, spirit, and relationships through confession, forgiveness

and reconciliation. Through such healing, God works to bring about reconciliation between God and humankind, among individuals and communities, within each person, and between humankind and the rest of creation. The New Continued on page 4...“Joy” continued

don’t put very much effort in maintaining them. For example, a goal-oriented male decides he wants to be married. He focuses on finding a suitable mate. He does everything in his power to win her over. But the moment he’s married, his goal is complete -- mission accomplished. He now sets a new goal. Typically, this means his attention is focused on providing for his wife and family. So off to work he goes focused on his financial goal. Meanwhile, his wife is wondering what happened to the man who was so attentive during courtship. Now she hardly sees him because he’s so busy working. What happened? His focus shifted.

But all is not lost because here’s the secret: Joy comes from making other people happy. God

designed it that way. Yet some are so exhausted after work or school, there is nothing left to give. That’s exactly why we need Jesus Christ. We can count on His love to give when human strength and energy runs out. So keep focused on giving.

As we enter into this “holiday” of giving thanks remember that in the giving there is love!

Grace, Hope, and Joy!

Testament records that Jesus himself healed the estranged and sick and sent out his disciples on ministries of healing. James (5:14-16a) calls us also to pray for and anoint the sick, that they may be healed.

All healing is of God. The Church’s healing ministry in no way detracts from the gifts God gives through medicine and psychotherapy. It is no substitute for either medicine or the proper care of one’s health. Rather, it adds to our total resources for wholeness.

Healing is not magic, but underlying it is the great mystery of God’s love. Those who minister spiritual healing are channels of God’s love. Although no one can predict what

will happen in a given instance, many marvelous healings have take place.

God does not promise that we will be spared suffering but does promise to be with us in our suffering. Trusting that promise, we are enabled to recognize God’s sustaining presence in pain, sickness, injury, and estrangement.

Likewise, God does not promise that we will be cured of all illnesses; and we all must face the inevitability of death. A Service of Healing is not Continued on page 5....

At least twice ayear, you should have a HbA1c to check sugar control over the last 2-3 months. Once a year, you should have a dilated eye exam to prevent blindness, a urine test for protein to prevent kidney failure and a cholesterolpanel o prevent heart problems.

It is important to be knowledgeable about diabetes and tolive a healthy lifestyle including eating healthy, exercise, taking medications properly and having a good rapport with your doctor. necessarily a service of curing, but it provides an atmosphere in which healing can happen. The greatest healing of all is the reunion of reconciliation of a human being with God.

When this happens, physical healing sometimes occurs, mental and emotional balance is often restored, spiritual health is enhanced, and relationships are healed. For the Christian the basic purpose of spiritual healing is to renew and strengthen one’s relationship with living Christ.

Communion is offered as part of this service because in the celebration of this sacrament we are reminded that Christ is no stranger to suffering.

Anointing the forehead with oil is a sign act invoking the healing love of God. The oil points beyond itself and those doing the anointing to the action of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the healing Christ, who is God’s Anointed One. The touch of laying on of hands provides a tangible expression of the presence of the healing Christ, working in and through those who minister in his name. ☺

Pastoral Care When HospitalizedBecause the pastor is not notified by the hospitals when you or a family member is admitted into the hospital, please call the church office so that the pastor can be informed of the hospitalization in order that appropriate pastoral care may be offered. Because hospital stays are becoming increasingly shorter (sometimes an overnight) and because the pastor is not notified, appropriate pastoral care cannot be offered while you or a loved one is hospitalized. Therefore, please notify the church office so that appropriate pastoral may be offered. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

Sunday School Happenings:Harvest Party at “Yeck Farms”:

By the time you receive this months Gleam, our annual trip to the pumpkin patch, at Yeck’s will be over, and hopefully we will still be recalling the wonderful memories we had

on that day. I am sure, if the weather cooperated, we had a blast on the hayrides and running through the corn maze. We also had a ton of hotdogs and snacks that left everyone feeling quite content on the ride home to watch the Steelers game. Thank you to those wonderful Sunday School Teachers who made this all possible, and to our church families for joining us!

Snack Food & Drink for “We Care”:

During the month of November, the Sunday school classes will be collecting snack foods and drinks for the children of our “We Care” food cupboard families. Each classroom will have a basket in their room to bring something in each Sunday in November. We are also having a contest to see which class can bring in the most! Mrs. Linda Fleming, who is one of our fifth & sixth grade teachers, and our “We Care” food coordinator, was telling our teachers at the last Sunday school meeting of the need for the children to have snacks that they can take to school, and be available for them when they arrive home from school. A few popular ones are the instant brown sugar oatmeal packets, fruit rollups, Capri sun drinks, etc. Think of what your child likes to have, and send one in for their Sunday school class basket!

Bible Sunday:

Our third graders will be presented bibles from the congregation on “Bible Sunday, November 19th. Each child will receive a “Hands on Bible” just like the ones that their teachers use during Sunday school class. It is a very special day for our third graders, and for our congregation to be putting the word of God in the hands of our children. Please join us for this special moment in their Christian lives.

Stewardship Corner:

The man dreamed often, but this one was different. He could remember each detail with an almost visible clarity. He had come through a gate and entered a narrow glade filled with tall rows of corn.At the edge of the field a man handed him a bushel basket and told him that he could go into the field and fill it with all the corn he could pick. When he selected a row and began his journey he saw that the ears on each stalk ahead of him seemed to be larger than the ones at the start. As he pressed his way through the glimmering foliage each plant seemed to bear a better and more

succulent variety. It was a wondrous experience, almost a phenomenon. The corn only a few feet ahead was always preferable to the ones he had passed. So he picked none, always looking ahead for a prize winning stalk. Continued on pg 11 Sunday School Teachers Luncheon & Workshop:

On Sunday November 5th our Sunday school teachers and assistants will be treated to a special luncheon by Pastor Bailey, and the Bailey family. There will also be a workshop led by a special guest, the Rev. Dr. Bill Wilson. Please RSVP to Miss Linda as soon as possible. The luncheon will take place after the 10:30 worship in Fellowship Hall. We would like to express our thanks to Pastor Bailey, for providing this special day of enrichment for our Education staff.

Christmas Play Rehearsals:

Oh yes, it is time for play practice! Our Christmas dinner and play will be presented to the congregation on Sunday, December 17th. Our dinner will begin at 5:00 that evening in Fellowship Hall; we will then proceed to the Sanctuary for our Christmas Play, which will begin promptly at 6:00. As before, we will provide a light lunch for the children, and youth, in the hall after the 10:30 worship service. Rehearsals will be held from 12-1 in the Sanctuary. We have included a schedule of the rehearsals, and a menu for the lunches that will be served in this Newsletter.

Kidz Club:

Kidz Club Cookie Bake:

Come and join us for Kidz club on Thursday, November 2nd when we make and bake cookies for the “shut-ins”! We are also going to make some for you to take home! Our special cookie bake will begin at 6:00 that evening in Fellowship hall, with pickup at 7:30. Be prepared to get messy! We are going to have a lot of fun, and we want you to be a part of it. If you are in Preschool through Jr. High, you are welcome to join our Kidz Club. Our December club will find us making Christmas ornaments, and luminaries! Come on, try us, you will have FUN!

Adult Night Out:

Our happy bunch of “restaurant hoppers” ended up at the “Texas Roadhouse” in October. As the saying goes: “What happens at the roadhouse stays at the roadhouse” fits very

well with this group! Anyway, if you would like to join us on Friday, November 17th we are traveling to the “Grand Valley Inn” on route 51 near Brady’s Run Park. As always, we will meet at the restaurant at 7PM. Transportation will be available for those in need. Please RSVP with Miss Linda if you are able to attend.“Stewardship” continuedThen suddenly he came to the end of the row, his basket still empty. It was then he awoke. He lay in bed for a long time simply thinking about this dream. Then he arose and went to his desk and removed a pad and pencil from the drawer and began to write:“Never again will I lay my head down at night knowing I ended the day with an empty basket. Once the day is gone it is lost forever. There can be no looking back on what might have been.”Each morning God gives us an empty basket to be filled with the spiritual joys of life: a kind word, a thoughtful deed, a gift of time, or talent, or resources in the service of others.

Joy through Christ is always there for the taking. You just have to reach out and seize the opportunity.

The youth will be making a return visit to the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen on Sunday, November 19th. They will be helping to serve Thanksgiving dinner. Anyone is welcome to come and serve with us. We

are also asking for donations of baked pies to take to the soup kitchen. If you would like to donate, the pies can be dropped off at the church that morning.

If you would like to join us for the cantata, we practice on Wednesday evenings from 8:00-9:00, in the chapel. We are looking for a few good altos, tenors, and basses to compliment our fabulous ones that we already have.

Praise Ringers:We would like to express our thanks to the “Praise Ringers” for the beautiful music on Sunday, October 15th. A special thank you to Cherl Himes for coming to substitute for us that morning! We are most gracious, and glad to have Randi Gibson back with us and feeling well again. Our ringers will be playing again for the congregation on Sunday November 19th during the 10:30 worship service.

I wish to thank Pastor Bailey for his most welcome visits and prayers. Thank you also to my sisters and brothers in Christ who lifted me to the Lord in prayer during my recent surgeries, for the prayers said for Walt, and the many, many cards I received with kind words of hope and encouragement. Team in September, so we have now gone from “Faith + 5” to “Faith +6”! Hopefully, we will always be adding and not subtracting! “Faith + 6” will be on the road again in December as we minister to the folks at a neighboring Methodist church in Daugherty Township for their Christmas Dinner.

Our special thanks to “Aldersgate” for providing music for our Church Cluster Conference that we hosted on Tuesday, October 17th. Our District Superintendent was very impressed that we have such talented musicians in our congregation. Many congregations are not as fortunate as we are to have two Contemporary Praise teams! Thank-You! Thank-You!Our November Contemporary worship will be on Saturday, November 25th at 6:30PM with “Aldersgate” leading the worship for us. Come as you are and join us for a very inspiring hour of worship.

Children’s & Cherub Choirs:Children’s choir rehearsal begins at 9:15 in the Chapel on Sunday mornings! Please make a note of this very important time. The children will practice from 9:15 to 9:30, and then join with the rest of the Sunday School children in their classrooms. This will allow our Sunday School classes to have the allotted time that they need for class on Sunday mornings. Please be prompt! All children in Kindergarten

through the sixth grade are welcome to sing with the Children’s choir. If you would like to have more information on the choir you may contact Miss Linda or Tabitha Bailey. Many thanks to the lovely young ladies who sang for us in October, you sounded “heavenly”! Tabitha would love to have more children sing on Sunday mornings. Maybe, even a few brave boys?

Cherub Choir:Our cute little “cherub choir” will be singing for us again during the month of November. I just love to see these little ones sing and do their motions to the songs. The cherubs practice on Sunday mornings as part of their Sunday school lesson time. If your child is of nursery age up through Kindergarten, they can sing with our cherubs! If you would like further information you may contact Marcia Hespenheide or Christine Smith. Christmas will be here before we know it. We will once again be decorating the “Feed a Family” tree. Envelopes will be hung on the Christmas tree in the Narthex. For a $20.00 donation, you could help feed a family in need.

We are currently serving up to 50 families a month and many of the families have school age children. Our shelves are looking bare and we need help. Any donations, either food or monetary, are appreciated. Remember the scriptures and our call to service for others as Christ would have us do. Please remember to make checks payable to We Care Food Pantry.

As always, we want to thank the congregation for their support.

In Christ,

Co-DirectorsDon & Linda Fleming
