EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO – Winona State’s first postseason game as a NCAA Division II school was certainly one to remember. In a game that saw the Warriors come back from an early 14-0 hole and eventually play three overtimes, WSU beat Missouri Western 43-41 in the Mineral Water Bowl.

Missouri Western scored a pair of touchdowns early to go up 14-0 midway through the second quarter. A 34 yard scoring pass from Andy Nett to Jeff Dobbertin got WSU on the board before the half. Winona State came out of the locker room for the start of the second half and imme-diately tied the game as Nick Jaeger intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a score. The Warriors added a second Dobbertin touchdown reception midway through the third quarter to post a 21-14 lead. Missouri Western forced overtime with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, setting up what would prove to be a marathon effort by both teams.

Winona State scored on its first overtime possession, a three-yard run by Curtis Jepsen. Missouri Western answered with a touchdown and added another on their next possession, both coming courtesy of the arm of quarterback Kasey Waterman.

The third overtime would finally produce a victor, with the Warriors capping a six play drive with an 11-yard pass from Nett to Dobbertin. Three of Dobbertin’s five catches on the day went for touchdowns while gaining 128 receiving yards. The Warriors converted their two-point attempt to take a 43-35 lead. Missouri Western had one more chance to keep the game alive. They scored on an eight-yard run to pull within two, but couldn’t punch the conversion in, letting the War-riors finish their first postseason with a victory.

GRAND FORKS, ND – A year after making their first postseason appearance, Winona State ad-vanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time in school history in 2001. Winona State won ten games in a season for the first time in program history in 2001 and started a run that saw the team advance to the NCAA postseason five times in the next seven years.

The Warriors held their own against North Dakota, a perennial power, but ended up falling 42-28 to the eventual national champion.

WSU went down 14-0 after the first quarter but a pair of second quarter scores made the half-time score 21-14 in favor of North Dakota. The Warriors got on the board thanks to a quarterback sneak by Bruce Carpenter and added a touchdown pass from Carpenter to Adam Lilla just before the half ended.

Winona State scored again in the third quarter on a 64-yard pass from Carpenter to Lilla, but North Dakota added two touchdowns of their own to stretch their advantage to 35-21. Lilla ended the game with seven catches for 118 yards. He added another scoring catch in the game’s final seconds, a two-yard pass from Brian Wrobel.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO – Winona State made its second trip to the Mineral Water Bowl in the span of three seasons and once again found themselves playing in an overtime contest. This time the Warriors came up just short, falling to Emporia State 34-27 despite a fourth quarter charge by the Warriors.

Winona State found itself down just 10-3 at the half but Emporia State began the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns to stretch its advantage to 24-3. That was when the Warriors took flight, scoring 24 unanswered points to hold a 27-24 lead midway through the fourth quarter. It was a trio of long passes that led the charge for Winona State, with quarterback Bruce Carpenter hitting Adam Lilla for a 42-yard touchdown late in the third quarter and then connected with Chris Samp (49 yards) and Jeff Dobbertin (54 yards) in the fourth quarter.

Emporia State marched down the field to kick a 28 yard field goal with two seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. Once in the extra period Emporia State scored on a 10-yard run by Tyler Paul and the Warriors could not match, giving ESU a 34-27 victory.

The Winona State offense completed just 17 of 40 passes on the day, but those 17 completions totaled 330 yards and three touchdowns with both Dobbertin and Samp gaining more than 100 yards in the contest.

Winona State 10, Emporia State 3NCAA Division II PlayoffsNov. 22, 2003 • Winona, MN • Maxwell Field

WINONA, MN – A season after Winona State and Emporia State met in the Mineral Water Bowl, the two teams did battle on the postseason’s biggest stage with the Warriors ending this matchup as the victor. Winona State earned the first NCAA postseason win in program history with a 10-3 victory over ESU. The win moved the Warriors into the NCAA Playoff second round for the first time in program history as well.

Offense was in short supply on a cold, windy afternoon with temperatures barely inching over freezing. That didn’t stop over 3,000 fans from entering Maxwell Field as the Warriors hosted their first postseason game.

Emporia State got on the board first, getting a field goal in the first quarter to take a quick 3-0 lead. That was the last time they would put points on the scoreboard, as the Warrior defense remained stout all game.

Winona State scored on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter. Brian Wrobel hit Chris Samp for a 34-yard touchdown with Steve Opgenorth following the next time WSU had the ball with a 22-yard field goal that put WSU up by its final 10-3 margin of victory.

Emporia State had four chances to score in the fourth quarter but threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in that span, with the Warrior defense shutting down any ESU attempt to get back in the game.

Not only was the 10-3 win a milestone victory for the WSU program, the game saw a milestone reached by Samp. Samp’s touchdown catch during the third quarter made him Winona State’s all-time leader in the category, scoring for the 30th time in his career. The receiver would leave Winona State a season later with 53 touchdown catches, a record that still stands.

North Dakota 36, Winona State 29NCAA Division II Playoff QuarterfinalsNov. 29, 2003 • Grand Forks, ND • Alerus Center

GRAND FORKS, ND – After beating Emporia State a week earlier to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time in program history, Winona State ran into pow-erhouse North Dakota. UND would eventually advance to the national championship game, but not before they were given all they could handle by the Warriors.

The final score was 36-29 in favor of North Dakota, but the Warriors completely dominated the game’s second half before UND found a way to score with seconds remaining in the contest.

At halftime it certainly did not look like a game that would go down to the wire, with North Da-kota holding a 28-7 lead after scoring four touchdowns in the span of 11 minutes in the second quarter. As much as UND had dominated the first half, the second would belong completely to the Warriors. Brian Wrobel scored on a two-yard touchdown run in the third and Steve Op-genorth kicked a 40-yard field goal to bring the Warriors to within 11, 28-17. An 11-yard pass from Wrobel to Alan Hartung made the score 28-23 as the fourth quarter got underway. Another touchdown, this one a 19-yard pass from Bounthavy Khamratthanome to Chris Samp gave Wi-nona State a 29-28 lead with 1:52 remaining in the contest. The Warriors had come all the way back and were on the verge of knocking off North Dakota.

UND marched down the field to score on a one-yard run by Adam Roland with just 24 seconds remaining. A two-point conversion put North Dakota up 36-29 and completed a rally of their own.

Texas A&M Commerce 20, Winona State 6NCAA DII PlayoffsNovember 18, 2017 • Winona, Minn • Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium

WINONA, Minn. – Texas A&M-Commerce put an end to Winona State University’s best season in over a decade on Saturday afternoon at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium in a defensive battle that saw the Warriors fall, 20-6.

A crowd of over 1,600 saw the Warriors quench a 13-year home postseason drought in what was WSU’s first NCAA playoff game since 2007.

No. 12 Winona State has it season come to an end with a record of 10-2 while No. 8 Texas A&M-Commerce (10-1) advances to the semifinals of the Super Region Four bracket.

The Warriors, who were picked to finished sixth in the conference preseason poll, posted their six 10-win season in program history under NSIC Coach of the Year Tom Sawyer.

“We had our opportunities today, but couldn’t get into the end zone, and if you look at our two losses on the year that was the determining factor,” Sawyer said. “Against a really good offensive opponent, you have to convert on those chances.”

Winona thrived this season capitalizing on its opponents’ miscues, but lost the turnover battle to the Lions, 3-1. Senior quarterback Darren Beenken played under center for the first time in three weeks after suffering a concussion and was intercepted three times in the loss.

Despite Saturday’s result, Beenken was still at the heart of WSU’s turnaround this season in helping guide one of the top-scoring offenses in the conference. The Farmington, Minnesota native waited four years for his chance to start for the Warriors and did his part in leading Winona back to the postseason.

On the other side of the ball, the country’s top passer, Luis Perez was 28-of-41 for 308 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Vincent Hobbs was on the receiving end of both scoring catches in the first quarter which put Winona in a 14-0 hole.

For the final three quarters, the Warriors and Lions played even with just six points apiece on the score-board. The teams entered the game each ranked in the top 13 in the country in scoring defense, and the units lived up to their billing.

Winona held A&M-Commerce to its lowest scoring output since week 1 of the season and slashed the Lions’ season average of 40.4 points per game in half on Saturday.

Luke Teague led the Warrior defense with nine tackles, including one and a half behind the line of scrim-mage. The senior also forced and recovered a fumble late in the first half near the Warriors’ own end zone.

Fellow seniors Andrew Spencer and Mike Imperiale recorded seven tackles apiece. Carter Duxbury also notched seven tackles and had the Warriors’ lone sack of the game.

Isaiah Frandsen hauled in four catches for 71 yards. Winona native, Eric Birth, led the ground attack with 61 yards on nine attempts.

Carter McCauley accounted for Winona’s six points on the night and finishes the season with a new single-season record of 104. The senior concludes his career as the Warrior and conference record holder with 55 field goals. Score by Quarters 1 2 3 4 Final RecordA&M-Commerce 14 0 3 3 20 10-1Winona State 0 3 3 0 6 10-2
