Supplies and Assignments

• A three ring notebook is needed for your copy of the ladder and the calendar. You are responsible for bringing this to class every day when we meet.

• Assignments: You will be asked to fill out a Yearbook Time Sheet of what you have accomplished every Friday and place it in a file folder on the teacher’s desk. Have a senior editor review and initial you have completed these assignments. You need to make the corrections on the spread when you are told to do so by a senior editor or a teacher. Teachers will check your spread upon completion, assign a grade and have the spread placed on the external drive by the senior editor. Make certain that you have placed the folio, page numbers, computer # you are using on the A document. Our school number with Herff Jones is 12602.

• Every student needs to bring a ream of paper or contribute $5 for the paper you will be using in this lab to print out spreads.

• No food or drinks are allowed around the computers. Computer mice will die if they eat, and other kind of mice will live if you feed them.

Interviews

• What do I ask/say to get the conversation going?

• How and why are you involved?• How did you feel about what happened?• Tell me about your favorite part of the event and share why it was

your favorite.• What was the worst part and why?• Tell me what the event was like from your point of view.• Tell me a funny story about something that happened.• Tell me something only people closely involved would know.

8

Design Terms

• Dominant Element/Photo-the largest element on a page.• Pica-1/6 of an inch…the unit of measurement used in

the spread design.• Folio-the page numbers and any other info at that part of

the page.• Headline-the large type, usually at the top of stories• Byline-the line or graphic that says who wrote the story.• Caption-copy that explains a photo• Copy-the text of a story. • Gutter- the space between columns and the space

between pages. Write out the design terms on your paper and identity

the above terms on your sample spread.

Cameras and Photography• We will be using digital cameras in yearbook. • We would like for students in this class to own a digital camera.

However, we know this is not always possible.• It you need to check out a yearbook camera, you will need to sign

out and bring the camera back to yearbook within a 24 hour period. (Show students the check out sheet. (You will be chastised and docked points if you do not return the camera in a timely manner.)

• We will be doing a photography assignment soon and downloading photos to our external drive or to the Lab folder on the server. This way everyone has access to photos. If the photo is being used please place the spread page number (p.2-3) on it to indicate to others to not use this photo. If more than one person is designing pages 2-3 and wants to use the same photo/pic then they will also need to place 2-3 by the photo to indicate where it is being used. This prevents the same photo from appearing on several spreads. (Senior Editors will show you how to do this.)

• Highlight the picture frame you want to place a picture in.

• Go to the menu bar/Herff Jones and drop down to HJ Image In

•

• You can use the tools such as scale, rotate, color, toggle reverse and remove to work on the pic.

• If you like what you see then click done and do a save as; if you don’t then click cancel and start over. Make certain you save to the desktop, the yearbook file on the server and to your file on the server. Always use “save as”.

• You will continue the above process until you have all the pictures placed on the spread.

• Some things to remember are that one of the above pictures needs to be a dominant picture…this means that it will stand out above the rest. Also remember that the dominant picture doesn’t always mesh or match up when you jump the gutter or place half on left spread and the other half on the right spread.
