The O’s had high expectaons this year with the playoffs held as that final reward. While the wins didn’t come as oſten as we’d like, the boys certainly have given us plenty to be proud of. Last Friday was a match up with the West Central Blue Devils, a 4-3 team that had already punched their cket to the post season. Maybe they looked past the Oriole’s, maybe they thought they could handle the O’s with a lesser effort or maybe Springville took the field healthy, pumped up and ready to make a statement. Friday was the last home event at Allison Field, the last night in the home jerseys for 11 Seniors and the last me we’ll hear Bill Bailey, I mean Tony Evens, blow his horn. Springville handled West Central all night long and cruised to a 40—12 win, just their 3rd of the season. The O’s looked like the playoff team, ringing up 333 yards on the ground, controlling the clock and playing solid defense against a team that threw the ball an amazing 34 mes. Safety’s Greg Pauly (3.5 tackles) and Carter Gillmore (6 tackles) contained their receivers while Andrew Lorimer, Trevor Hule and Andy Hagensick rushed their QB forcing 2 picks, one tallied by Pauly and the other by Tyler McDowell. The Blue Devils also coughed up a fumble and Hule was there to snatch it up for the O’s. McDowell put on another show with his quick feet and side stepping, running for 226 yards, throwing for another 30 and returning a punt plus two kick offs for another 63 yards. He scored from the ground 4 mes and threw for another to Pauly. Cody Blake has been hobbling around all season but was finally able to show his talent, carrying the ball 17 mes for 93 yards including a touch down. It was great to see him flaening Blue Devils (3 tackles) and one couldn’t help but wonder “what if” he had been healthy all season. Ryan Menster had another amazing catch in the end zone for a 2 point conversion, Pablo Penalba was 5 of 7 in touch backs, and Wya Dlouhy lined up in the wildcat formaon for his tailback debut. It couldn't have been scripted any beer for the O’s, their families and their fans. What remains is their final game at Cedar Valley Chrisan this Friday. CVC is 1-7, the O’s 3-5. Friday’s game is technically away, but being in Cedar Rapids really makes it a home game for the O’s. It will be a single Varsity game at 7pm, join us for the 2014 Oriole Football Finale—Who knows, maybe our bigs—Avery Troester, Trevor Hule, Menster and Dlouhy could rotate running the offense while Penalba, Pauly and McDowell play the line. Lorimer and Blake as the wide outs? Oh my, let’s draw it up! Crazier things have happened— another reason to make it Friday night!

ORIOLE FOOTBALL CLOSES HOME STAND WITH BIG WIN

It seems as if we were just breaking in the back packs, sharpening new pencils, organizing lockers… and now here we are at the close of a Fall season. Safety’s Greg Pauly (3.5 tackles) and Carter Gillmore (6 tackles) contained their receivers while Andrew Lorimer, Trevor Hulett and Andy Hagensick rushed their QB forcing 2 picks, one tallied by Pauly and the other by Tyler McDowell. The Blue Devils also coughed up a fumble and Hulett was there to snatch it up for the O’s. McDowell put on another show with his quick feet and side stepping, running for 226 yards, throwing for another 30 and returning a punt plus two kick offs for another 63 yards. He scored from the ground 4 times and threw for another to Pauly. After taking 2nd in the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament, the Lady O’s await the start of District play. Springville received a first round bye and will play North Tama on the 28th in the cozy confines of Machovec Gymnasium. After winning, they’ll stay home and host the winner of Gladbrook Reinbeck/Don Bosco on the 31st. Last week the girls looked poised as they defeated East Buchanan and Alburnett in the opening round of the conference tournament held in Alburnett. On Thursday they beat the Buccaneers, 15-21, 21-19 and 15-13 then they turned around to face the Lady Pirates and beat them in 3; 20-22, 21-19 and 16-14. Most of you know a win at Alburnett is always tough but never insignificant. The girls had a great force of momentum to propel them into continued play on Saturday at Calamus-Wheatland. They took care of Easton Valley in quick fashion; 21-8 and 21-9 to earn another run at Lisbon. The match with the Lady Lions was a 3 set thriller but Lisbon held on to win as the O’s won the first set 25-18, lost the 2nd set 26-24 and then dropped the tie-breaker in a tough 15-12 loss. The important thing is the girls are playing tough volleyball at the toughest time of the year as they enter the one and done part of their season. North Tama has a record of 14-17, they knocked off East Buchanan to earn their trip to Springville. Springville is led by Senior Sarah Matus who leads her team with 3.5 digs a set (2nd in conference standings), Junior Megan Wagaman who leads her team in kills with a 2.6 average (3rd in conference standings) and the Fabulous Freshman Mikayla Nachazel who leads her team AND the conference (8th in 1A) in total blocks. Nachazel put on a clinic at Alburnett and owned the net on Thursday. You can see these girls, ranked #14 in the last poll of the season, next Tuesday when they’ll host North Tama. Time? 7pm. Location? Machovec Gymnasium. Leave your jacket in the car, the girls will have you fired up the moment you enter the building.

Pictured above right, Nachazel and Wagaman make an epic block against Alburnett. To the right is Sarah “Digger” Matus. Below, the team celebrates a big point. To the left is Megan Wagaman showing her hops as she goes up for a kill.

GLOECKNER AND LORIMER LEAD CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS

The conference cross country meet was held in Clinton last Thursday and Springville had 3 runners in the top 10 finishes. In girls competition Katelyn Gloeckner ran a time of 17:20, good enough for a 4th place finish while Sam Lorimer ran his race in 18:05, good for a 2nd place finish. Brady Barner used a strong kick and finished in 10th place with his time of 19:11. Andrew Lorimer earned a 24th place finish and with Derek Hanshaws’s 30th place finish the boys earned a 2nd place team finish in the competition. The runners prepare for the state qualifying district race at Columbus Junction on Thursday. Let’s go O’s!

THE FAMOUS AMONG US— OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT...Once in a while we

catch a glimpse of someone at an Oriole event, coach, fan or an athlete, and we take a 2nd look because they remind us of someone. This week we feature volleyball player Ashley Brady pictured to the left celebrating an exciting point won at Alburnett last Thursday. Her excitement and joy just might match that of Kirsten Dunst in the film “Bring It On”. Don’t you think? After all,

Ashley IS a cheer leader! However, I

doubt that Kirsten is a volleyball player!

Binley field may never see the likes of again. Beyond softball, Wyman also participated in the Homecoming Committee this year, she is involved with the coordination of Unified Sports Day and serves on the SACC and PRSSA committees while also holding the CEO title of “Tower Agency” a student based Public Relations firm on campus. All this while studying and excelling as a student athlete. Katie is the daughter of Jennifer and Todd Wyman.
