At UAB, we change lives and inspire extraordinary futures. The University of Alabama at Birmingham pushes the frontiers of education, research and patient care within a bold, collaborative culture that strives to be first, best and one of a kind.

Our story is one of remarkable growth in size, quality, reputation and impact. From modest beginnings as an extension center, UAB became an autonomous campus in 1969 and has grown to offer 149 degree programs in arts and sciences, business, dentistry, education, engineering, health professions, medicine, nursing, optometry and public health.

The university and our campus has helped Birmingham move to the forefront of medicine, business, research and development with a thriving arts and cultural scene. Our 21st-century campus channels all the energy and opportunities of the metropolitan city we call home.

This dynamic living and learning environment inspires and nurtures achievement, social responsibility and enterprise as we embody a spirit of discovery that advances knowledge, solves real-world problems and drives economic development.

Our impact on education, health care and quality of life cuts across classes, cultures and continents into inner-city classrooms, rural clinics and far corners of the globe. Additionally, the highly diverse faculty and students who make up our family are embraced as citizens of the world.

UAB21, our strategic plan, is a pledge to prepare our students and community for the challenges of a new knowledge economy: global literacy, biotechnology and biomedical science, energy, transportation, materials engineering, information technology, computing security and entrepreneurship. These goals are fueling record enrollments, attracting exceptional faculty and strengthening community partnerships.

We approach the future with the same audacious vision that led our founders to dream big dreams and commit to this mission: To educate, advance research and discovery, care for the sick, respond to the needs of the Birmingham community and use knowledge to establish Alabama as a progressive economic center that can change the world.

“ Increasing access for international students is a key step in growing our economic impact in the region and a step forward in our initiative to bring the world to UAB.”Ray L. Watts, MD President, The University of Alabama at Birmingham

Understand the Pathway ProgramOur International Year One Undergraduate

Pathway programs combine intensive

English language study, academic skills

development and academic course work.

They are carefully designed programs to

help you through the first year of your

undergraduate degree program. Joining our

Pathway program will not extend the overall

length of an undergraduate degree program.

In fact, it will guarantee places in required

courses, which may prevent extension of

your program length.

Decide if the Program is Right for YouThe Undergraduate Pathway program is for

students who:

• Want to study for an undergraduate

degree in the US

• Desire additional academic, language

and cultural support in order to succeed

during the first year at a US university

• May need to improve English

language skills

• May have a lower GPA than required for

direct admission to degree program

• Meet any or all of the above criteria

Fully Integrated University ExperienceIn addition to intensive English instruction,

Pathway students take core academic

courses including math, science, writing

and other courses required of all domestic

and international students. Undergraduate

Pathway courses are UAB credit-bearing

courses. Some programs will require taking

courses in the summer in order to complete

the degree in four years. Programs such

as engineering may require a fifth year to

complete a bachelor’s degree.

Program BenefitsPathway students receive the highest level

of support during their transition abroad,

making the program an ideal choice for

international students who are driven to

achieve high academic goals.

Other benefits include:

• Guaranteed progression to a UAB degree

program (upon successful completion of a

Pathway program)

• Full integration with domestic and

international students on the UAB

campus

• Access to all UAB cultural events,

athletic events and activities including

UAB’s state-of-the-art recreation center

• Classrooms and housing in the heart of

UAB’s compact and accessible campus

with shopping, dining and other services

located nearby

• Individual supplemental tutoring

• Highly trained and experienced university

instructors

• Academic advising throughout the program

Transfer StudentsQualifying students who have earned

credits at an accredited educational

institution are welcome to apply to the

INTO UAB Undergraduate Pathway program.

There is no cap on number of credits that

may be transferred.

Understand the Pathway ProgramThe innovative Graduate Pathway programs

offered at INTO UAB are designed to

develop international students’ academic

knowledge and strengthen their language

ability and study skills, enabling them to

progress successfully to a UAB graduate

degree program.

Decide if the Program is Right for YouThe Graduate Pathway program is for

students who:

• Want to study for a graduate degree

in the US

• Desire additional academic, language

and cultural support in order to succeed

during the first year at a US university

• May need to improve English

language skills

• May have a lower GPA than required for

direct admission to degree program

• Meet any or all of the above criteria

Fully Integrated University ExperienceThe academic courses included in the

Graduate Pathway programs are carefully

chosen to ensure student success in

graduate-level studies. Academic courses

are all existing UAB courses and most will

provide an opportunity to study alongside

both American and international students.

The exact program structure and combination

of classes taken will depend upon a student’s

previous academic record and future study

plan. Students will be registered into required

courses before their academic orientation at

the INTO UAB Center.

In addition to intensive English instruction,

students will also receive instruction in study

skills and GMAT test preparation if needed.

Program BenefitsPathway students receive the highest level

of support during their transition abroad,

making it an ideal choice for international

students who are driven to achieve high

academic goals. Students who successfully

complete a Graduate Pathway program are

assured progression to a UAB graduate

degree program upon submission of

additional required application materials.

Other benefits include:

• Full integration with domestic and

international students on the

UAB campus

• Access to all UAB cultural events,

athletic events and activities

including UAB’s state-of-the-art

recreation center

• Classrooms and housing in the heart of

UAB’s compact and accessible campus

with shopping, dining and other services

located nearby

• Highest level of support for student

success

• Highly trained and experienced

university instructors

• Academic advising throughout

the program

Unique New Pathway ProgramsMaster of Science in Computer Forensics and Security ManagementThis interdisciplinary graduate program is

jointly offered by Computer Science, Justice

Sciences and Business. The program is

designed to prepare you with backgrounds

in criminal justice, computer and information

sciences, information systems, information

technology and forensic accounting to

practice in the fields of computer forensics

and security management. Further, the

program is intended to develop skills,

including familiarity with industry practices,

innovative methods, critical thinking and

problem solving crucial for competitiveness

and success in computer forensics,

information security management, and

forensic accounting.

As an example of the real world learning

done at UAB, The Center for Information

Assurance and Joint Forensics Research

received a $250,000 donation from

Facebook in recognition of the center’s

role in tracking international criminals

behind social-media botnets and spammers.

The donation, which comes from money

Facebook recovered from spammers located

around the world, resulted in a space on

campus known as the Facebook Suite.

The suite allows students in forensics

research to collaborate in a setting that

mirrors the offices at Facebook headquarters

in Silicon Valley.

Master of Public AdministrationUAB’s nationally ranked Master of Public

Administration program has prepared

students for successful careers in public

service where they can serve the greater

good. We have graduates locally and across

the country who have become successful

leaders and managers in local, state and

federal government positions and in

nonprofit organizations. The program is

accredited by the National Association of

Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.

Our program is ranked #68 in the nation

and is ranked the #1 stand-alone master’s

program in the South. It is also one of the

top 200 public administration masters

programs worldwide.

Part of the UAB advantage is the networking

that comes with the Public Administration

program. We offer what many others cannot:

connections to the people who make hiring

decisions and opportunities to connect with

government and nonprofit agencies. Take a

look at all that we have to offer. We hope it

fits what you are looking for.

“ What has surprised me about UAB is the variety of opportunities for students to be involved and have a good college experience. Once I get my degree, I hope to use the knowledge that I obtain to develop my country.”Israel Gloudoua, Ivory CoastCivil Engineering
