THABA CHWEU residents are at risk of being left in the dark every day as the municipality is about to lose critical power generating capacity from its hydro-electric plant near Lydenburg. As part of a three way agreement, the municipality pays a contractor to operate and maintain the plant and to generate and supply 2,1MW of electricity to the Glencore Merafe smelter, Eskom and the town's grid. According to DA information, the agreement is now under threat as the municipality owes the service provider over R11,4 million, and has not honoured its agreement with Eskom to service its outstanding electricity debt, which now stands at R168 million. The effect on Lydenburg will be devastating to say the least. Electricity demand will far exceed supply, and result in regular power outages in both the CBD and residential areas. While businesses lose income, the local economy will contract, and no jobs will be created and harm investor confidence. Thaba Chweu is wholly unable to provide even the most basic of services to residents, and the provincial task team has done nothing since October, except sit

by and watch how the municipality is systematically being destroyed by political infighting and factionalism. This governance crisis has to come to an end, and Premier David Mabuza and cooperative governance MEC SPD Skhosana must put their political allegiances aside and intervene. Thaba Chweu is fast becoming South Africa's worst performing municipality, and the premier and the ANC have to admit that municipal governance have come to a standstill and to dissolve council under the auspices of Section 139(1)(c) of the constitution and declare elections in all wards. What Thaba Chweu needs is a DA-led government, with an administration staffed by suitably skilled and competent individuals, and by normalising service delivery, transform this municipality into an attractive investment destination and rapidly creating job opportunities.

Ek voel egter dankie is nie n opsie. Almal waardeer n dankie. Daarom is ek n bok daarvoor. In my leefwreld bruis Afrikaans, sowel by die ATKV (waar dit seker moet).

Of hoe?

  • FOLLOWING his visit to Lydenburg earlier this year, Dawie de Swardt published this article on Afring, an e lec tronic journal publ i shed by SAFRING, Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town. The whole town of Lydenburg was very excited about his research in the Paardeplaats Catchment area and other areas around the panorama.Dawie is an ornithologist at the National Museum in Bloemfontein.

Dawid H. de Swardt Recommended citation format: de Swardt DH. 2014. Recapture and movement data of Gurney's Sugarbird Promerops gurneyi in the Lydenburg area, Mpumalanga province, over nearly three decades. Introduction Gurney's Sugarbird Promerops gurneyi is endemic to eastern Southern Africa with isolated populations in eastern Zimbabwe and adjacent Mozambique and also in the Waterberg and Soutpansberg mountain ranges in Limpopo Province, South Africa (Brown 2005). Its core range is along the Drakensberg massif associated with Protea species where it is locally common (Brown 2005; de Swardt 1997). This species is known to disperse locally at the end of the flowering periods of Protea species (mainly P. roupelliae) during the winter months, where birds move away from the mountain localities (de Swardt 1991; Symes et al. 2001) and these movements have been studied in the Lydenburg area since the early 1980s (de

Recapture and movement data of Gurney's Sugarbird Promerops Gurneyi in the Lydenburgarea over nearly three decades

Swardt 1990). The occurrence of sugarbirds in the mountains surrounding the suburban areas coincides with the peak summer flowering period of P. roupelliae, the preferred food plants of sugarbirds growing in these areas, after which birds disperse to the suburban areas during the winter months (de Swardt 1991). They also disperse away from Protea localities after fires, through dispersal from natal areas and in response to above- and below-average summer rainfall seasons in mountain localities (de Swardt 1998). This study reports on recapture data obtained since 1998 and reviews the movements of this species over a period of 26 years in the Lydenburg area, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Study area & methods Gurney's Sugarbirds were captured and ringed at selected P. roupelliae clumps on mountain hillsides and plateaus in the montane grassland areas around Lydenburg, and also during winter in the suburban areas at cultivated Protea and Aloe spp. since 1987. The study sites were mainly at the Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve, Nooitgedacht Nature Reserve and farms on the plateau adjacent to the Long Tom Pass to Sabie, as well as farms on the Steenkampsberg mountain range south-west of Lydenburg. During the winter months (April-July), when cultivated Protea, Aloe and other species were in flower, sugarbirds were captured at the Lydenburg Production Unit, gardens of the Lydenburg Hospital and also at several private gardens. Most sites were revisited annually to obtain recapture and survival data (de Swardt 1991; 1998). Ringing sessions during summer were mainly concentrated at the mountain Protea clumps, while efforts were made during winter to capture sugarbirds at Aloe clumps in the suburban areas. Capture sessions during winter were also made in the mountain areas as sugarbirds were also present there during some seasons. Ringing sites were revisited as frequently as possible to obtain recapture data. These sessions also varied considerably during the years, especially after 1998 when fewer field visits were made to the study sites (once every three years). Results During the study period, a total number of 875 sugarbirds were ringed in the Lydenburg area (data of other ringers included), with a total of 123 individual recaptures and/or recoveries (recapture rate of 14.0 %).

Seasonal movements of sugarbirds (a total of 26 individuals) between the mountain and suburban areas have been noted since the early 1980s (de Swardt 1990, 1991; Table 1). A mean seasonal movement distance of 8.3 km and elapsed period of 30.5 months were recorded. The longest distance moved to date for the species is 37 km, by an individual (ring 498404) ringed on 21 May 1993 by Susan Schoeman in her Lydenburg garden and recovered 29 months later at Crystal Springs Resort, Pilgrims Rest, by Warren McLeland. Six individuals were observed showing possible post fire dispersal after being recaptured at other mountain localities (or moved seasonally) after fires occurred at localities after initial capture (Table 2). Mean inter-population distance moved was 2.25 km. Two sugarbirds ringed at a Protea clump at Nooitgedacht Nature Reserve in the Finsbury valley during 2005 were recaptured at a large Protea clump at Natalshoop after a fire during winter 2006 (De Swardt 2010; Table 2). During the winter of 2013 the Natalshoop farm was burnt by an accidental fire and the grassland and Protea trees were severely damaged by the fire. During February 2014 the Natalshoop site was revisited, but because 90% of the Protea trees was burnt by the fire, ringing was commenced at a small clump near the original ringing site. A sugarbird was recaptured (ring CC71255) which was ringed 7 years previously at the original Natalshoop ringing site (Table 2). A total of 68 sugarbirds were recaptured at, or near (less than 2 km), their original ringing sites in the mountain localities. Several sugarbirds (n = 24) were also recaptured at suburban localities (summer localities of these birds are unknown). The longest time elapsed between ringing and recapture at a suburban site is a sugarbird ringed (by Kotie Herholdt) and recaptured (and resighted) at the Fisheries Institute (ring 4806889) after 13 years (De Swardt 2010). Nineteen sugarbirds were captured after elapsed periods of 4 years or more (mean elapsed time is 69.5 months). Interesting capture and recapture data were obtained at the Paardeplaats locality along the Long Tom Pass which was the most frequently visited study site during the study period. A total of 295 sugarbirds were captured there since December 1986, of which 129 (43.7 %) were during the winter months (May August). A total of 39 recaptures were obtained at this locality of birds ringed there (13.2%) and high numbers of sugarbirds were observed at this site during some seasons, for example the 1995/96 and 2007/08 seasons. It was observed that during some high rainfall seasons, more sugarbirds were present

(mainly May-July) at this site and its surroundings. During such years of high rainfall (mainly October February period), it was observed that the Aloe species in the valleys were full in flower and still in flower later during the winter nearer to spring (September). During such periods it was not unusual to capture sugarbirds at the Protea sites with aloe pollen present on their foreheads (pers. obs).Discussion These studies in eastern Mpumalanga, as well as those of Calf & Downs (2002) and Symes et al. (2001) in the eastern Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, show that the seasonal presence of Gurney's Sugarbird mostly occurred as a result of the flowering phenology of Protea species, but also by other factors such as post fire dispersal and availability of Protea inflorescences which is dependent on good rainfall (pers. obs). It is known that the sugarbirds are territorial at their Protea localities and have been observed to move to other Protea clumps after the occurrence of veld fires (de Swardt 2010). A total of 671 (36.4 %) Gurney's Sugarbirds were captured in P. roupelliae woodland in the Mpumalanga and Free State study sites showing their fidelity and association to this vegetation type (de Swardt 2012; unpubl. data). Of 875 sugarbirds ringed in the Lydenburg area, 26 individual recaptures were obtained in the Protea clumps were ringed or very close to it. The P. roupelliae localities in which the sugarbirds were ringed over the years were affected by grassland fires and post-fire, and seasonal movements were observed in the population (de Swardt 1993; 2010). The sugarbirds will move away to another unburned site when their territory is affected by fire or when nectar resources are depleted. During dry seasons it was observed that actual number of flowers on Protea trees was generally scarce with only a few inflorescences present. During such years, large influxes of sugarbirds were observed in the suburban areas where they also visited flowering aloes (de Swardt 1991, 1998). The furthest seasonal movement record for this species is a recovery in the Pilgrim's Rest area (Brown 2005; SAFRING unpubl. data). In some areas, especially in KwaZulu-Natal, their distribution ranges have extended due to the increase of Protea nurseries in these areas and the sugarbirds may even become resident if there are year round nectar supplies (Potgieter et al. 2008). Previous studies show that sugarbird seasonal movements coincide with the peak flowering period of P. roupelliae, but their movements were also in response to veld fires in Protea veld the birds disperse when nectar resources are depleted (also after drought conditions as this data suggests) (de Swardt 1991; 1993).

THE time has arrived for agriculture, the financial sector, the business sector and everyone who owns property to mobilize. This call comes from Mr Louis Meintjes, President of TAU SA, following a workshop of the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform. A draft document, "Final Policy Proposals on 'Strengthening the Relative Rights of People Working the Land'" was discussed. Drastic and radical proposals being made ? ? are: Land will be shared among those who work it. Everyone shall have the right to occupy land wherever they choose. Historical land owners will retain only 50% of their land. The 50% to be made available for shareholding will be compensated for by government but will be held in a trust. All workers who worked on the farm for periods between ten and fifty years will receive allocations of 10% and 50% of the ownership of the farm. This will in effect destroy the agricultural industry in South Africa and put food security at risk like in Zimbabwe.

SOUTH AFRICA got a first look at the GWM C30 at last years Johannesburg Motor Show, where the company promised that this B-segment sedan would be available within the year. GWM has kept its promise, and you can have this vehicle for R179 990.Under the bonnet is the same 77 kW 1,5-litre engine that does duty in the recently-launched M4. GWM claims a fuel consumption figure of 6,4 litres/100 km and a top speed of 170 km/h. This unit comes mated with a five-speed manual transmission. With a wheelbase of 2 610 mm and a cargo-carrying capacity of 475 dm3, GWM believes that the C30 has one of the most spacious cabins and the biggest boot in its class. It also comes fitted with many nice-to-haves such as air-conditioning, power steering, electric windows all-round, electric mirror adjustment, radio / CD / MP3 player with USB, auxiliary and Bluetooth support and a rake-adjustable steering wheel. For peace of mind, there are dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and Isofix child-seat mountings. Included in the price is a 5-year / 45 000 km service plan and a 5-year / 100 000 km warranty with 2-year AA roadside assistance. Carmag.co.za

MARCH turned out to be a fairly stable month in the motor industry, with overall vehicle sales having declined by just 0.2 percent over the same month last year. Naamsa commented that consumer sentiment remained under pressure due to "high levels of indebtedness, sharp increases in energy and transport costs and e-tolling in Gauteng." However, WesBank noted strong demand for finance and added that while the market was initially unsettled by the 0.5 percent interest rate increase in January, confidence has subsequently returned following the recent MPC meeting where a conservative approach was communicated with regards to future hikes. According to figures released by RGT Smart, 55 363 new vehicles were registered during March, of which 5.0 percent were sold to government, 4.7 to the rental industry and 4.5 percent to corporate fleets. While passenger car sales saw a 2.2 percent year-on-year decline, the light commercial vehicle sales picture improved by 3.7 percent over March 2013. Export sales, meanwhile, registered a year-on-year decline of 11.2 percent to 24 660 units. However, the export situation is expected to improve once the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class comes on stream. SA's top exports for the month were the VW Polo with 6198 units, Toyota Hilux (5889) and BMW 3 Series (5584). On the local sales charts, Toyota dominated by moving 11 688 vehicles, followed by Volkswagen (8800), Ford (6289) and Hyundai / Kia (6001). 20 TOP SELLERS - MARCH 2014 (1). Toyota Hilux - 3415 (2). • THE Easter weekend is almost upon us and soon the great South African Holiday Migration will be throwing the politburo into its usual panic as it tries to put a positive spin on the fact that the front-line troops have neither the numbers, the training nor the motivation to contain the havoc on our roads. So, in much the same way that we take responsibility for our own safety at home with neighbourhood patrols, insurance industry spokesperson Elmarie Twilley, of Virseker, advises that you put your vehicle through your own private roadblock right about now, so that you have time to sort out any problems you do find before it's time to hit the long road. That means not only driving more cautiously, she said, but also making sure your car is in tip-top condition - many crashes are caused by cars not being roadworthy. Also, you definitely don't want to be stranded at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere - that will make you vulnerable to criminals. Reverse up close to a light-coloured wall after sunset and look over your shoulder as you hit the brakes and operate the indicators for a quick, easy and foolproof tail-light check that doesn't require getting out of the car or the assistance of a second person. Do the same for the front indicators and headlights - main beam and dips! Make sure that headlamps are adjusted correctly - as a rough guide the upper edge of the (dipped) light beam should be no higher than the bonnet of the car. Walk round the car and make sure that all body panels, mountings and accessories - including the tow bar, if you have one - are properly fastened and tight. The same applies to any load your car may be carrying. Check all the windows for cracks or small chips; a damaged windscreen not only reduces visibility, but also has limited ability to protect you in adverse conditions or in a crash. Check that the wiper blades and their mechanisms are making a clean sweep every time. Open the boot (before you pack a long weekend's worth of luggage in there) and check that the spare wheel is in good condition, inflated to the correct pressure and that the tyre actually has some tread on it. Check that you have the right jack and a wheel-brace that fits your wheel fastenings. Check that all the wheel fastenings are tight. While you're up close and personal with each wheel, check that it's inflated to the right pressure and has at least 3mm of tread all the way round. The law says 1mm but anything less than 3mm will not keep rainwater from getting between the tyre and road at 120km/h. If the tread has bald patches, or if it's bald all the way round on the edges, and if it's bald on one side only, have the fitment centre check the wheel alignment. When you put the wheel-brace back in the boot, chuck in a block of wood about the size of a family bible; if you have to change a wheel on the gravel shoulder of the national road you'll thank heaven for it. Check the oil level - twice, at least five days apart. If you can see the difference, have a competent mechanic check whether the car is leaking or burning oil, and take appropriate action. Check the coolant system when the engine is cold. Pop off the radiator cap and check that it seals properly and check that the level of coolant is up to the MIN mark on the plastic reservoir. If not, replenish with clean tap water that has stood for at least 24 hours for the chlorine to evaporate or, if you're anal about such things, a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and distilled (battery water) - both available at your local supermarket. Check that the coolant is clean; if the reservoir looks like it's full of mud, chances are the radiator is too; have it flushed before you leave town. Check the windscreen washer bottle. If it's low, fill it with clean tap water and one small squirt of dishwasher; that's all it needs. Check that the level of brake fluid in the master cylinder is up to the MIN mark. If not, replenish from a fresh bottle of brake fluid and, when you get back from the coast, discard whatever's left. Once a sealed container is opened, brake fluid absorbs water vapour from the air and rapidly becomes dangerous to use - storing it for 'next time' is not a good idea. If the battery is not of the sealed type, open each cell and eyeball the level: if the top edge of the plates is above the water, replenish with the distilled water you bought for the radiator (no antifreeze this time!). The actual level is not critical, as long as the plates are covered. Check all the belts you can see; as a general rule, if you can move

it more than the width of your thumb, it needs adjustment (time to dig out the owner's handbook) and if you can see any visible fraying at all, that's a disaster waiting to happen - have it replaced pronto. Visually check the engine compartment for leaks, and add up how many kilometres you will drive before you get back home. If it will take you past the next service point, have the car serviced before you leave. Sneak off to the mall at the crack of dawn on a weekday when the car park is empty, get your car rolling at about 60km/h in the middle of the car park and hit the brakes as hard as you can. If the car pulls to one side, the steering wheel vibrates, or you hear any knocking or grinding noises, have the brakes, suspension and wheel alignment checked. If the car rocks like a noddy dog after a violent stop, have the shock absorbers checked. Ask the kids to listen under the car for any puffing noises (other than from the hole in the end!) coming from the exhaust pipe. A damaged exhaust system not only cuts power and increases fuel consumption, but if it leaks exhaust fumes into the cabin it can knock you out before you even smell it. Keep a decent-sized flashlight and a safety triangle in the car (not under a long weekend's worth of luggage in the boot) to warn oncoming traffic when your car has broken down. Don't rely on your hazard lights; if your car has an electrical gremlin they may not be working. Check that your insurance and your breakdown plan are up to date and keep all those emergency numbers on a card in the glove compartment. Yes, we know they're on speed dial on your smart new phone but if the kids have run its battery flat playing video games you may be calling from somebody else's phone. Your car is not the only thing that needs to be roadworthy. The most important safety component in any vehicle is the one holding the steering wheel. Get enough sleep before you start a long road trip. Fatigue is a major cause of road accidents, Twilley pointed out, so if you're not well, sleepy or not up to the drive, it's worth delaying it for safety reasons. Before you pull out of the driveway, adjust the seat and steering wheel to a comfortable position; if you need to use a pillow to support your back to avoid back pain, then do it. Wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for driving - not loose sandals that could slip off your feet if you suddenly have to brake. Take a break every two hours or so to keep alert. Driving through the night isn't heroic, it's stupid. While you're on the road, keep your energy levels up by snacking on healthy fruit and other nutritious food and staying hydrated with water. Sugary junk-food snacks may give you a quick boost but the sudden let-down can be a killer. Twilley added: Decent sunglasses to block out the glare are essential and will also prevent eye fatigue. Here's her final tip - and we'll bet it's one you didn't think of: Know where you're going. Planning your route and knowing exactly how to get there reduces family stress and lets you concentrate on driving - and arriving - safely. iol.motoring.co.za

  • IT was at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012 that Bentley shocked the worlds media and showgoers with its EX9 SUV concept. The level of negativity was mostly aimed at the front section which featured a challenging light design. However, the Bentley SUV was given the green light for production last year. Now Bentley has revealed the first teaser image of what is claimed to be the most powerful and luxurious SUV.Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, chairman and chief executive at Bentley Motors, commented at a press conference in London, said: It will create a completely new segment in the SUV market.Fortunately the face of the car looks similar in design to that of Bentleys Continental models, which is a good thing. No technical details have been made available, but there are a few specifications we can be assured of. A V8 engine will power the SUV, similar to the engine currently offered in the Continental GT. However, we wont rule out the use of Bentleys W12 engine, although by 2016 the company could have developed a newer unit.According to Bentley the SUV will become available in 2016.Carmag.co.za

YAMAHAs first three-wheeler, the 125cc Tricity, is also the first in a series of commuters collectively labelled, aimed at increasingly congested inner-city road networks. While it's intended to provide the same feeling of stability and rider confidence, it's much smaller and nimbler than earlier scooters with twin front wheels such as Piaggio's MP3, which were touted as performance machines - with prices to match. The Tricity's patented leaning multi-wheel mechanism is based on a lightweight parallelogram link, hidden behind the front cowl and connected to the forks and the frame's steering head. This allows the twin front wheels to lean over in parallel in a corner, with almost no change in track. The suspension on each front wheel operates independently, with two cantilevered telescopic forks in tandem. The rear tubes function as guides, while the front fork tubes handle damping functions over a 90mm stroke. The twin cast-alloy 14 front rims are fitted with 90/80 tyres, while a 12 rim with chunky 110/90 rubber supports the rear end. An integral braking system combines a 220mm disc on each front wheel with a 230mm disc on the rear wheel. When the rider squeezes the right brake lever, only the two front brakes are applied, but when either the left brake lever or both together are operated, all three brakes are applied, with electronic brake force distribution ensuring smooth stopping. The Tricity has a straightforward, slightly undersquare (52.4 x 57.8mm) single-cam, two-valve liquid-cooled four-stroke single with YMJET-FI fuel injection. Its barrel is cast in a special aluminium alloy with specific silicon content, with no sleeve - the piston runs directly in the aluminium bore - and both intake and exhaust systems have been tuned for bottom-end torque and strong mid-range acceleration. Peak outputs are thus conservative: 8.1kW at 9000rpm and 10.4Nm at 5500, and it drives the rear through a conventional belt-drive CVT transmission, in unit with the engine. The Tricity weighs only 152 with fuel and oil - heavy for a class A1 scooter but way lighter than any other three-wheeler on the market - with classic 50:50 front/rear weight distribution, just as on Yamaha's Grand Prix machines, for the same reasons: quick, consistent turn-in. Keeping the engine low in the chassis puts the centre of gravity just under the nose of the saddle for light, responsive handling without compromising stability. The stepped dual seat is covered with a slip resistant material, and the storage space under it will take a full-face helmet. There's also a 'convenience hook' on the legshield in front of the rider. It was invented by aircraft designer Angelo Corrado in 1946 for the Vespa scooter, as a place for lady riders to hang their shopping bags, but is now universally known among scooteristi as a curry hook! A central digital speedometer dominates the all-liquid crystal instrument panel, flanked by an odometer, clock, air temperature gauge and an array of indicator lights -

AFTER a long battle, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has finalised a law which will require automakers to install reversing cameras in all vehicles by May 2018.Wheels24 reported that the rule was first proposed in 2010 for all vehicles to have reverse cameras in 2014. According to the Detroit News, the new rules set rear visibility standards that automakers will initially be able to meet only by installing cameras. However, much like before, automakers said on Monday (March 31) they are petitioning the Obama administration to let them end the use of side-view mirrors if they installed cameras that could perform the same task a move automaker's believe could improve fuel efficiency and costs. The DetNews also reported that the cost of hardware has reduced as more cameras have been added to certain models. Honda and Subaru have announced all vehicles will have standard cameras. Transportation secretary Anthony Foxx campaigned for the law to be finalised. NHTSA predicts 59% - 73% of all vehicles purchased in 2018 would "have had the cameras anyway".Children younger than five-years-old account for 31% of the 210 people killed annually in "reversing deaths", while people older than 70 account for 26%, reports the DetNews. Reportedly, 15 000 people are injured annually in reversing incidents. NHTSA said: Most people place a high value on the lives of children and that there is a general consensus regarding the need to protect children. The costs of parents running over their own children, NHTSA said, is not easily convertible to monetary

equivalents.Automakers will need to produce 10% of vehicles built after May 2016 with cameras, 40% after May 2017 and all units after May 2018. The rule calls for cameras to turn on within two seconds of the driver shifting into reverse and outlines how bright multimedia screens should be.Wheels24.co.za

all of which light up in an animated sequence when you turn the key. The Tricity will be released in Europe from mid-2014, priced at less than 4000 (R60 000) - once again, heavy for a class A1 scooter but way lighter than any other three-wheeler on the market. iol.motoring.co.za

Arguably the highlight of the South African National Rally Championship, the Sasol Rally returns to the Mpumalanga Lowveld for the 23rd time on April 11 and 12 for a feast of forest special stage racing. The event is round two of the national championship and also the second round of the FIA African Rally Championship.Generally regarded as the blue riband round of the championship, it is organised as always by the South African Motorsport Club (SAM) under the overall direction of clerk of the course Willie du Plessis, who has long carried the responsibility of ensuring that the event lives up to its reputation. This year will be no different. The familiar gravel forest roads in the Sabie, Graskop, Pilgrim's Rest, White River and Hendriksdal areas, which are generously made available and expertly maintained by owners York Timbers, will again form the heart of the rally. There will be a total of 14 special stages over the two days, seven on Friday, April 11, and seven on Saturday, April 12, said Du Plessis. Four of these will be tarmac stages, including the traditional Sabie and White River town stages on Friday night and, on Saturday, the traditional Nelspruit Super Special, where two cars compete against each other at the same time, and a tarmac stage around the Mbombela soccer stadium. The total stage distance is just over 200 kilometres and, with the liaison sections, is around 590 kilometres. The road conditions can be expected to be excellent thanks to the ongoing maintenance efforts of York Timbers, who as usual are completely on board and as enthusiastic and helpful as always. We owe them a big 'thank-you'. Despite unseasonably late rains which delayed their maintenance work, it's a miracle what they've achieved in such a short space of time.In order to familiarise competitors with the route under FIA African Rally Championship rules, there will be a recce of all the gravel stages on Wednesday, April 9, during which competitors will be able to drive over the route twice at a maximum speed of 60 km/h (in sharp contrast to the upwards of 160 km/h some cars will achieve on the actual event). There will be a shakedown stage at Hendriksdal on Thursday afternoon, April 10, starting at 13:00 and covering some 6,29 kilometres of Saturday's 25-kilometre special stage 10 and 12. Competitors may repeat this as often as they wish. This is a great opportunity for the fans to get a close look at the cars and crews in action before the actual rally starts in Sabie at 10:00 on Friday.Day one starts with five gravel stages in the York Timbers forests in the Sabie, Graskop and Pilgrim's Rest areas and ends with the traditional and popular tarmac night stages in Sabie and White River before the overnight stop in Nelspruit.Saturday's first stage is the Super Special in Nelspruit, which starts at 08:00, with the tarmac stage at the Mbombela stadium immediately afterwards. Four gravel stages follow in the Hendriksdal and Sabie areas before the rally returns to Nelspruit for the traditional short special stage on grass inside the main arena of the Lowveld Showgrounds.

No shoes but they will runAthletes from Lydenburg are on their way to the Comrades Marathon without running shoes or financial support. But it is a dream they wont give up on and nothing will deter them from competing. Sipho Mnisi and his friends have been running the Comrades for years. This is a way of life for them. They competed in the Goven Mbeki District Marathon this past weekend. Their results were as follows: Eric Gwembe in 21km, 1:25, Sipho Mnisi in 42.2km in 3:31, Makalang Papano in 42.2km in 3:00 and Sipho Tjawoke in 42.2km in 2:49. Please phone the Highlands Panorama News to help these athletes. It is a worthy cause.

Sipho Mnisi with the medal he won in the 42.2km.

  • LOCAL rider Bernard McGee won first place in his class and second over all at the Gauteng Outdoor Club (GOC) Inland Championship. It took place at the military base near Potchefstroom on 29 March. The first place winner was Lubbe and Craig Gregory also finished first in their classes (open and 250 class). BJ Scholtz, Danie van Wyk and Riaan Prinsloo all finished in the top five in the 200 class. The new member on the team, Paul Calitz, finished ninth after having a crash in the first lap. Thank you to Clifford McGee for stopping and helping his team mate get back on the track and racing again. It just shows what great team spirit and team work these guys do for each other, even if it means sacrificing their own finish.Other local racers from Lydenburg also made great effort to travel to and attend the races. Well done to Louis Jacobsz who finished fourth in the masters class. Wikus Olivier took fourth place in the 250 class, Christo Stander finished 22nd and Michael van Eck fifth in the open club class. A total of eight McGee riders got up early that morning and prepared for a long day to come, not only racing but travelling as well. The weather held out just fine, partly cloudy and not to hot, just perfect. The quads started at 8:00 and finished by 11:00. The bike riders started at 12:00 and were informed that the track layout was going to be very rocky and tight. For the first 8km riders were to keep an eye out for the danger markings as there were plenty out on the field, with a few mud holes and one rock hill climb to concur. The bikes pulled away in rows of six bikes. It consisted of 60km a loop. The riders had to be out in three hours for their third and final lap. Thank you to Garth McGee and the pit crew for helping the riders prepare their bikes and making it all happen for the team. Craig Gregory.
