10-Day Lateral Entry Orientation
Introduction
Guiding Principles Vision: The Collaborative to Support Initially Licensed Professionals strives to improve the learning experiences of our students by providing focused, consistent, ongoing support for new teachers. It is our intent to "Leave No New Teacher Behind."
Mission: The Collaborative is dedicated to identifying and addressing the needs of newly licensed professionals.
Beliefs: We believe that jointly we have the opportunity and responsibility to promote the critical attributes and essential components of programs that must be in place to provide quality support to:
- New Teachers
- Lateral Entry Teachers
- Support Coaches
- Mentors
- Administrators
- Collaborative Representatives
Purpose What was the motivation for designing this project?
To provide member LEAs with a framework for meeting state requirements in a more effective collaborative manner.
To fulfill the State's requirement for hiring Lateral Entry Teachers
Project Description The project consists of nine (9) modules to be implemented over a period of ten (10) days prior to a lateral entry teacher's first day in the classroom.
Member LEAs may use this project as a guide for implementing local lateral entry orientation requirements. It is important to note that this is a suggested framework and may be adjusted for local needs.
2 of 24
Modules are listed in recommended order of implementation; however, each module may stand alone which could facilitate local variations of implementation and accommodate shared resources.
Each LEA will have a corresponding hard copy of this project.
The Collaborative will partner with other agencies in implementing this project. Partners include, but are not limited to, Chowan University and the North Carolina Model Teacher Education Consortium.
Module Format Each module contains seven (7) components:
Objectives of the module
Suggested personnel who may participate in implementing the module
Recommended activities to be completed in order to meet module objectives
Recommended resources needed in order to meet module objectives
Means of evaluation to determine if module objectives have been met
Additional related resources that might be helpful in meeting module objectives
Feedback form to provide the Collaborative with comments/suggestions on design and/or contents of this website.
Outline of Ten-Day Modules It is suggested that modules are implemented in sequence; however, this is not a requirement. The modules are flexible enough to use a different sequence for implementation except for the final module, which is a culmination of the previous modules.
Each module is designed for one day of implementation, except for the module on Curriculum and Instruction; however, the modules are flexible enough to allow for local variations in implementation.
Suggested Sequence
Module 1: Policies/District Day
Module 2: School Day
Module 3: Observation and Evaluation Process
Module 4: Curriculum and Instruction (2 Days)
Module 5: Assessments
Module 6: Communication
Module 7: Classroom Observations
Module 8: Classroom Management
Module 9: Bringing It All Together/Debriefing
