#10: January 31, 2016 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
True love of a person requires that we know who they are as much as that is possible. We believe that we are loved by God and that God truly knows us. This is expressed beautifully in today’s first reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. God states, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” As God knows Jeremiah, he knows each and every one of us. God’s desire is for us to also know His love and come to a deeper understanding of God in our own life so we can respond back in love to God. St. Paul in the second reading today from his First Letter to the Corinthians expresses how important it is that we understand the love of God, accept it, and respond back with love. He points out many great things that we can do: speak in human and angelic tongues; comprehend great mysteries; and hand our bodies over to be burned. Yet, if we don’t have love, they come to nothing. Understanding the love of God and accepting it is essential for our lives. In the Gospel today, Jesus is misunderstood by the people of Nazareth. It is where he was raised and they think they know Him. Yet their misunderstanding comes out. They go from being amazed at His words to wanting to toss him off the brow of the hill. The question before us is do we truly know Jesus? We may know about Jesus and some of the things He said and did, but do we truly know Him? To know Jesus is to grow in relationship to Him and to love Him. This is an ongoing process. My process of getting to know and understand Jesus started at home with my parents and was supported over the years through my time in school. I’m grateful for the education I received at St. Patrick Grade School in Fremont; Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School; and Gross Catholic High School. Today we begin Catholic Schools Week and we celebrate here at St. Pius/St. Leo School 60 years of Catholic Education. Let’s us give thanks for 60 years of helping young people grow in their knowledge of Jesus and pray that we will continue to do this into the future. Thank you: People are always so generous during the Advent/Christmas Season. It enables our parish to serve the needs of many people. John Brown of The Knights of Columbus Council here in the parish recently gave me an update on the Baby Bottle Collection. They had 103 bottles turned in (2 more came in after this report was given to me) with a total contribution of $1526.57. Thank you to all who supported the Knights efforts. The Archbishop wants to hear from you: In the Fall the Archbishop will present a Pastoral Plan outlining priorities for the Archdiocese in the coming years. Before forming this plan, he wants to hear from all of us. Listening Sessions will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on the following dates and locations: February 1st, St. Gerald, Ralston; February 2nd, St. James, Omaha; February 24th, St. Robert Bellarmine, Omaha; and March 29th, St. Cecilia School, Omaha. The Archbishop is hoping that many will take the opportunity to attend one of these sessions. It is requested that you RSVP. You can RSVP by going to: archomaha.org/listen. Pius Pasta Fridays are coming! Pius Pasta Fridays are coming! This year they will be held each Friday from February 12th to March 18th. This is a great opportunity to volunteer your time for the Parish and have fun at the same time. The Pasta Chefs will do all the cooking - we need help baking desserts, serving pasta and cleaning up. You can volunteer
for one shift or all night - typically 1st serving shift is 4:45 - 6:15 pm, 2nd serving shift 6:15 - 8:00 pm, and 3rd shift cleanup up runs from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Welcome Archbishop Lucas as we celebrate our 60th Anniversary Tuesday of this week with all of the St. Pius X / St. Leo students coming to St. Leo the Great Church! The students will all take school buses to St. Leo Church. Not only will we be celebrating our 60th Anniversary but we will also be celebrating Catholic Schools Week. We hope that many parishioners will join our school community for either the 8:45 AM Mass or the 10:30 AM Mass. If you know of any neighbors or

Grief is something we can rarely get around; we must simply go through it. Comforting or consoling the sorrowful and grieving people in our life often involves a kind of silent and understanding accompaniment more than words or actions. There are a tremendous number of people who suffer from sorrow and grief in our world today, so there is a tremendous need for Christians to practice this work of mercy. To listen
and give understanding attention often provides the greatest value. Here are some practical ways we live this Spiritual Work of Mercy: · Walk with others through their pain. (The St. Pius X Bereavement ministry is a good example of this). · Offer Words of encouragement to those who seem discouraged; · Help find resources to those who are in need of support (CareNotes are available in the kiosk)

I think – and I say it with humility – that this is the Lord’s most powerful message: mercy….” Pope Francis on March 17, 2013, in a homily for the Parish of St. Anna in the Vatican Men’s Retreat will be Saturday, February 6, 8:30 – noon, with Father Joseph Miksch. His theme: “Called to Share in Jesus’ Ministry of Mercy.” Cost is $10. February 29. Jack Jezreel will be featured the first night, Frank Runyeon the second, and Archbishop Lucas on the third. All will speak to the theme of “mercy.” Speakers will begin at 7:00 PM in the church. Refreshments will be offered before and after the presentations. Level 3 in the Wednesday evening Religious Education Program is learning about the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy. Catechist and aide Nella Brown and Nyawuor Paljor recently challenged their astute group of mercy-sleuths to search the Pius Sunday bulletin for a trail of Works of Mercy completed by the parish. They found
many examples. Whew! Did you know we were being scrutinized?

Spirit of St. Pius: Faith in Action Homebound and Care Centers
At the present time, we know of about 20 parishioners who are homebound and unable to make it to mass. In addition to those who are still in their own homes, there are about 20 Catholic residents at each of the care facilities within our boundaries, Maplecrest and Ambassador. In an effort to be responsive to the
needs of those in our parish who are disabled, sick, or confined to their homes we try to schedule a communion minister to bring communion to them on a weekly basis. While not in our boundaries, we also take communion to Angels Touch Alzheimer’s house and Immanuel Hospital. Fr. Mike also says mass weekly at Creighton St. Joes and
Skyline. Fr. Mark does a monthly mass at Maplecrest and Ambassador. It is because of over 30 committed Eucharistic ministers and priests that we are able to take a bit of the Pius Spirit to these individuals at these places.

The Neighborhood Outreach Ministry will once again be hosting a Service Provider day. We have over 17 agencies that will be on site to help those within our neighborhood who may need help.
