The Leader in Me and Carey School John Peck
This year has been a very interesting year at Carey School. We started a new way
of doing business at the beginning of the school year with four days of instruction on the
7 Habits by Stephen Covey and The Leader in Me program by Sean Covey. What a great
way to start the school year! The first three habits are about a private victory, how aperson takes responsibility for themselves, the choices they make and how they act. The
next three Habits are geared around a public victory, or how a person interacts withothers, and then the seventh habit is about renewal and keeping yourself fresh and
balanced.
Just like every other school we are concerned about bullying and charactereducation. In the past we have had teachers doing Tribes, others doing Character Counts
and probably some other forms of Character Ed and Bully prevention. This year we had
the opportunity to begin the year all being on the same page, using the same languagePre-School to 12
thgrade, in the classroom and on the playground, in the locker rooms, on
the basketball court and the football field. Our school is a different place because of the 7Habits.
Habit one is Be Proactive, the habit of Choice. The students are taught, in just
about every lesson, I am free to choose and I am responsible for my choices. Theteachers dont change their current lesson plans, they just incorporate the 7 habits into
their everyday lessons. When it becomes the students choice and their responsibility to
learn the learning increases.
Habit two is Begin with the End in Mind. This habit is the habit of vision. Each
child needs a vision of where they are going in each lesson, each day and in the future.
Habit three is Put First Things First. This is the habit of integrity and execution.
Students are taught to put important things first and to act on their priorities. Important
activities are ones that represent your values, mission and goals. Scheduling your time isimportant so that you can accomplish the important things.
Habit four is Think Win Win. The habit of mutual benefit. Effective, long-term
relationships require mutual respect and mutual benefit. The idea that there is plenty outthere for everyone, there doesnt have to be a winner and a loser.
Habit five is Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. The habit of
mutual understanding. The idea that to communicate effectively we must first learn tounderstand each other. We learn to listen with the intent to understand, not the intent to
reply.
Habit six is Synergize. The habit of creative cooperation. The whole is greaterthan the sum of the parts. Together we can create a better way than we can by ourselves.

Habit seven is Sharpen the Saw. The habit of renewal. To maintain and increase
effectiveness, we must renew ourselves in body, heart, mind, and soul. We must takecare of ourselves.
We have a really good school. We dont have many discipline problems. We
have great teachers, outstanding students, and wonderful support from our parents andcommunity. But just like every other school we have issues and we have always been
trying to find the right program to solve all our problems. I think one of the hard things
about character ed. programs, or a bullying program is that it is difficult to tell if it isworking, it is hard to show or see the results. With the 7 habits as our character ed. and
bullying program, many things have changed at Carey School.
We had a beginning of the year parent night and introduced the program in the
gym and then went out to the new playground for a 7 Habits ribbon cutting. It was an
electric atmosphere, the kids were so excited, just an amazing event for everyone. You
can see a short video of it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9rq3LBm3Wg that was
the beginning, since then we have embedded it into our hallways, our classrooms, ourconversations, our language and our lives. I had a conversation this morning with a
coach who told me that he was looking for a Win-Win situation with some athletes. Thecommon language is a huge part of the change at our school. Here is another video that
was created to help show some of the changes that have happened in our school from the
teachers and students perspectives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqO_hT5Aoyc
There are many stories that we have been collecting about the students learning
the habits and using them at school and at home. One of the very first stories that I canremember came to me in a thank you note before school even started. At our training
each of the teachers and paraprofessionals received a 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peoplebook, and those who taught Middle and High School students received a 7 Habits of
Highly Effective Teens book. One of our paraprofessionals took the teen book home and
gave it to her daughter who would be starting the 9th
grade in a few days. She said that
her daughter was not excited about the book when she gave it to her, but she agreed toread a chapter or two. That night she came into their room a couple of times to talk about
different things in the book that really impressed her. She continued to read the book
until the mother finally went in and told her to go to bed. The daughter came to talk toher mother the next morning and said that she needed to write a letter to a boy who had
left our school the year before. The mother asked why, and the daughter said that she
needed to do it because she felt bad that she had hated him so much over the past coupleof years. The daughter finished the book the next day. The thank you note expressed
how much she appreciated the training and the book and how much she looked forward
to the coming school year with the program in place at Carey School.
Another success story was told by a playground paraprofessional. She has been
having problems with two girls for years on the playground. The two girls just didnt like
each other; they would have problems and then come running to her for her to solve theproblem. When this happened the first time this year the adult said to the students, I want
you to go over there by the building and work this out, dont come back to me until you

have a solution to your problem and then come back over here and tell me what you are
going to do to take care of it. They went over by the building, talked for a few minutesand then came back and told her that they had worked it out. She has not had a problem
with those two girls since. Just the simple thing of giving the responsibility back to them
is all it took. They worked it out.
I received an e-mail from a mother who said, in reference to the 7 habits I
have a story. My daughter came home one night telling me that another girl in her class
had made fun of her reading abilities that day when she had to read aloud to the class (Ithink or maybe it was in a reading group). Preparing myself for the tears and trying to
decide which speech to give. I have several like just ignore her, we all learn at different
paces, or buck up and forget it. I was waiting for the tears and trying to decide my courseof action when I realized she really wasnt all that upset. She looked me boldly in the eye
and said, That isnt a very win-win attitude is it mom! I concurred she was right and
filed my speech away for another day since she gave herself a speech.
One of our teachers said, more of my students have become much more interestedin going to college and what type of career they want to have. They have been organizing
and making lists, talking about it together, and realizing that ultimately what they do is upto them. A very nice change, they realize they have to be a leader of their own learning.
I received this e-mail from a parent. Mr. Peck, I don't imagine you get manypositive responses from parents. I guess we have a tendency to make a fuss when things
aren't good but forget to take the time to point out the good.
I asked my kids how their day was yesterday and they reminded me that Mr.
Covey had been there. The usual response I get from them is "good" when I ask thatquestion each afternoon. Yesterday was different, they spent quite a bit of time telling
me about what took place, the things Mr. Covey talked to them about and the stories that
he told. Its not very often that I get to have such delightful conversations with them
about the good things that happened at school. It was nice as a mom to see the positiveeffects of yesterday's events. I can only imagine the hours that have been put in to make
The Seven Habits work in the school and I appreciate it!
A grandmother told us this story. I was walking with my granddaughter to my car
and I asked her if she had a great day in school. Excitedly she replied, "Yes, but during
second recess a girl was not very nice to me, she wouldn't let me play with her." Iexpected to hear the blow by blow details of this encounter from my little drama queen
but was actually surprised by her next words. "We just worked it out", she said in a
matter of fact voice.
"How did you do that", I asked. She replied, "Well, Girl A was going to tell the teacher,
but I said we don't need to tell the teacher we can work this out. Then I just said to Girl
B, Remember Win-Win, everyone can play. Girl B said, Oh, thats right you canplay." Then she said with a shrug, "It's ok, Girl B just forgot for a minute."

The school secretary said, Boy A was very upset because Boy B had shaken Boy
Cs shoulders and made him fall down and bite his tongue really hard. When I had bothboys together to try to figure out what happened, they both tried to talk at the same time.
All I had to say was, Boy B has the talking stick so lets listen to what he has to say.
After both boys had said what happened and the whole scenario was explained, the boys
understood why it happened and how each felt about it. Boy B really felt sorry when herealized how much it had hurt Boy C. Boy C felt much better when he understood that
Boy B was just trying to say hello, he didnt mean to make him fall. We all agreed that
listening and trying to understand each other was a better solution than visiting theprincipal.
I had a group of 6th
grade boys that were sent to my office because of theirchoices at recess one day. They were making fun of each other and ganging up on each
other until it got out of control. I handed out a list of the 7 Habits and asked them to read
the list to themselves. Then when they were finished I asked them to tell me what
happened and I wanted them to let me know which habit they had broken and how we
were going to fix this problem. It led to a great discussion; they knew where they hadmade mistakes. They said that they would help each other remember the 7 Habits and
they would not have the problem again. I wish I could say that it took care of everyproblem and we dont have any more, but we are still working on a few.
We have been working for years on our Ds and Fs in 7th
12th
grades at CareySchool. It seemed 5 or 6 years ago that we had way too many. One trimester we had 32
Fs and 48 Ds with 122 Students taking 5 classes each. In a school like Carey where we
only teach Algebra 1 A once each year, when a student fails a class it can be a realchallenge to help them make it up. We went to work on helping students, giving them
extra help and the support they need to be successful. The Ds and Fs dropped, we weredoing very well, we had not met our goal of No Ds or Fs but we were doing much
better, in the range of 37 Ds and 11 Fs. Much less than before, but still not where we
wanted to be. The habits teach the student and teachers to take responsibility for their
actions. I am in charge of me. Begin with the end in mind. Put first things first, and soon. I am excited to say that this year we have had the fewest Ds and Fs by far than we
have ever had. First trimester 18 Ds and 3 Fs and 2nd
tri we had 27 Ds and only 1 F out
of 525 possible credits. The students and teachers taking responsibility for the learning inthe classrooms really make a difference. The education the students are getting is much
better. I believe it makes a difference in all aspects of our lives. I know it is very
difficult to say that the 7 Habits made something happen, but I honestly believe theteaching of the 7 Habits has greatly helped our school. This past football season our team
won the State Championship. Then this past month our Boys won the State Basketball
Championship. The first time in our schools history we have won a BasketballChampionship. I dont think the 7 Habits made that happen, but I do believe the teaching
of the 7 Habits in our school gave the students the tools to make it possible.
The stories go on and on. I hope you can tell from this that I am very excitedabout this program and its influence on our school. I would like to invite you to come
and visit Carey School and see for yourself the kind of school we have. We are not

perfect by any means but I truly believe that our school is a better place for students and
adults because of the The Leader in Me program in the elementary classes and theteaching of the 7 Habits in grades 7 - 12.
