As we head into November we are delivering a packed brochure, brimming and beaming with over 70 films (!), which will see us past Christmas and the New Year. There’s a present for everyone. Yes, there will be A Wonderful Life on Xmas Eve and yes there’s the now annual Hollywood mega-blockbuster in the form of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but there’s so much more! There might also be an extra surprise for our Members, who deserve it. We wish a Merry Xmas to all of you. Thank you for your continuing support and keep an eye on your inboxes... The goodies we have on offer could easily fill an advent calendar, so you may as well start opening them! You could easily start with the bigger boxes, the ones with the brightest ribbons. Suburbicon sees Clooney, Damon and the Coens shuffle the pack, as George takes the director’s chair, while Battle of the Sexes has Emma Stone produce the performance of her career (according to the critics) as Billie Jean King opposite one Christmas Carell. Or you could search between them and find those smaller offerings, which are nonetheless beautifully decorated and maybe slightly more intricate. Genius Michael Haneke returns with his first film since Amour in Happy End, a French family drama set against the backdrop of the Calais refugee camp; while The Lobster’s Yorgos Lanthimos presents The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which at a glance looks even more barmy than the aforementioned.

But don’t ignore that strange shaped present, badly wrapped, which represents the best intentions of whoever put it together. The Disaster Artist sees James Franco play Tommy Wiseau, the auteur behind The Room – which incidentally we’re also showing for the first time in a few years. Get your spoons!

There’s also Book Week Scotland, Fokus: Films from Germany, Scotland Loves Anime, French Film Festival, Take One Action Festival and Festival! itself, for which we have a special early preview of the wonderful Edie, with some very special guests at the screening. In fact there are so many films that we had to create a whole new screen! Kino Bar is a new space at Belmont Filmhouse, hiding in the basement. It’s not exactly a cinema and it’s not exactly a bar, but it will be an experience and we’re very excited about it! Grab a drink, slouch in a sofa and enjoy a few films hand-picked by Belmont staff. Colin farquhar, Cinema manager

This classic Agatha Christie tale is truly given the Hollywood treatment here in Kenneth Branagh’s star-studded adaptation. What begins as a lavish railway journey through Europe becomes a tantalising mystery when - with the train at a standstill - a passenger is found murdered. Everyone aboard is now a suspect and Belgian super-sleuth Hercule Poirot (Branagh, sporting a quite spectacular moustache) is on the scene - but he must be quick to solve the puzzle before the killer strikes again...

Alfred Hitchcock • USA 1960 • 1h49m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong violence. • Cast: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin.

A milestone in cinema history, 57 years on from its release Psycho’s brilliance remains undimmed. Most of us will know what befalls Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) at the Bates Motel, but it still boasts more than enough richly nuanced details to keep us constantly amused, intrigued and pleasingly ill-at-ease. Bernard Herrmann’s unsettling score and Joseph Stefano’s darkly witty script work wonders, too. In the end, however, through his mastery of mischievous audience manipulation, this masterpiece is Hitchcock’s through and through. Book for this and 78/52, get 15% off!

Bafflingly shot simultaneously on both digital and 35mm, it is a suburban morality play in which the virtuous Johnny (played by Wiseau) is betrayed by his girlfriend Lisa (Juliette Danielle) and his best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). In the ultra-Orthodox world of a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, strict religious traditions frown upon a child growing up in a home without a mother. By ignoring the precedent, Menashe risks ostracisation from the community he loves; worse, his son Rieven could even be refused access to school. Blessed with impressive depth and a warm touch of humour, this sympathetic glimpse into the life of a community rarely depicted on screen is a fascinating and heartfelt study of fatherhood versus religious duty.

Their community-based approach is celebrated in this stirring, emphatic rebuke to global inequality. followed by a discussion.

Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) takes on the French New Wave and runs with it in style. Charting the brief relationship of Jean-Luc Godard and Anne Wiazemsky, Hazanavicius gives his subject a thorough going over, sprinkled with irony, humour and affection. As Godard becomes more interested in politics he alienates his wife and his friends not to mention the public who preferred his zestful early films. With an almost unrecognisable Louis Garrel displaying a deft talent for comedy, Hazanavicius focuses on the inner turmoil of creative spirits.

Stéphane de Freitas • France 2017 • 1h39m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 12A • Documentary.

Speak Up follows a group of students taking part in an oratory competition in the Paris suburbs. The French have always had a way with words, which is why the annual college concours Eloquentia, or eloquence competitions, have such an important place. But not everyone is a born orator, nor are they necessarily given the tools - especially if they come from a family where French isn’t even the first language. The film looks at a group of mixed race students involved in the contest for the first time, and proves how the art of speech is key to universal understanding, social ascension, and personal revelation.

François Ozon • France 2017 • 1h47m • Digital • French with English subtitles • 18 • Cast: Marine Vacth, Jeremie Renier, Jacqueline Bisset, myriam Boyer, Dominique reymond.

François Ozon’s erotic thriller, about a woman Chloé (Marion Vacth) who falls in love with Paul, her psychoanalyst (Jérémie Renier) but discovers there’s more to him than meets the eye, sees the director back to his old tricks after the restrained Second World War saga Frantz. His latest foray has style, sex appeal and a delicious streak of craziness. Loosely based on the Joyce Carol Oates novel Lives of the Twins and with distinct shades of Brian De Palma and Hitchcock on the side. Watch out for Jacqueline Bisset in a neat cameo part.

A moving, beautifully modulated adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s first novel, in which a young noblewoman copes with the loss of ideals. Stephane Brizé (The Measure of a Man) offers a dazzling mosaic of the trials and tribulations spanning 27 years in the life of Jeanne (Judith Chemla, Camille Rewinds). A revelation in the role, Chemla effortlessly encapsulates an expansive range of emotions and developments while exceptional camerawork, production design and costumes recreate every detail of Jeanne’s world.

The following day, he travels to Quebec, where he is welcomed by his father’s best friend, Pierre. However, Mathieu’s intentions are thwarted when Pierre forbids him to reveal the purpose of his visit to his brothers who are unaware of their relationship. Robin Hardy • UK 1973 • 1h26m • Digital • 15 - Contains strong violence • Cast: Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Eckland, Diane Cilento, ingrid Pitt, lindsay Kemp.

Generally regarded as one of the best British horror films ever made, The Wicker Man focuses on a devout police officer who is sent to a remote Scottish island to investigate the case of a missing child. What he discovers, though, is a community that has renounced Christian values in favour of pagan fertility rites. It’s a movie about the crisis of faith, with an ending that can be interpreted in a number of ways. And on top of all that, it’s bloody scary...

An ambitious Scottish duke is promised the throne by three mysterious witches, and his murderous coup begins to consume him. Alexander Mackendrick • UK 1949 • 1h24m • Digital • U - Contains no material likely to offend or harm • Cast: Basil Radford, Joan Greenwood, Jean Cadell, Gordon Jackson, James robertson.

The story of a ship that runs aground carrying 50,000 cases of whisky, and of the fictional Todday islanders’ attempts to salvage and hang on to the cargo. Compton Mackenzie, who wrote the famous comic novel, was inspired by a real wreck and by his experiences living among the islanders of Barra. The humour is gentle and wonderfully dry - the introductory voiceover sets the tone when talking about the isolation of Todday: “To the west there is nothing,” says the narrator, before adding as a throwaway line “... except America.”

This heartwarming fantasy is one of the most popular films ever made. The film begins as angels discuss George Bailey (James Stewart), a small-town resident so beset with problems that he contemplates suicide. Stewart is the heart and the soul of the film as the dreamer who sacrifices all for his fellow man. Bring a hanky!

Victor Fleming • USA 1939 • 1h38m • Digital • U - Contains mild fantasy horror • Cast: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert lahr, Jack haley, Billie Burke, margaret hamilton.

Judy Garland stars in this classic as Dorothy, who must escape from Oz by following the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, where the great Wizard of Oz can help her return to Kansas. Along the way, she picks up some new friends - the heartless Tin Man, the brainless Scarecrow, and the courage-less Cowardly Lion, each of whom hopes that the Wizard can offer him what he lacks. Filled with extravagant sets and costumes and glorious song and dance routines, this is a joy, even more so on the big screen.

Joe Dante • USA 1984 • 1h46m • Digital • 12A - Contains moderate violence and fantasy horror. • Cast: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly holliday, Keye luke.

It starts with a Christmas gift - a cute, cuddly little ‘mogwai’ - but the time of goodwill soon turns hellish when, splashed with water, the creature starts sprouting the titular monsters, whose sense of mischief extends to the murderous and beyond... With a characteristic mix of narrative anarchy, cinephile references, cartoon-style slapstick and black-tinged comedy, Joe Dante gleefully sinks his teeth into the kind of fluffy, sugary, sickly small town fantasy beloved of his pal and sometime producer Steven Spielberg.

The revelry comes to a violent end when the partygoers are taken hostage by a group of terrorists headed by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who plan to steal the 600 million dollars locked in Nakatomi’s high-tech safe. Meanwhile, smart-mouthed New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) has come to LA to visit his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), who happens to be one of the hostages... John McTiernan’s action siege caper has become a true alternative Christmas favourite - yippee-ki-yay!
