The Your Dubbo Program is an initiative of Dubbo City Council and Dubbo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, developed in consultation with a range of local business stakeholders. All key elements of the campaign are sourced from, or provided by, local businesses. Dubbo businesses have been invited to join a unique program that celebrates, recognises and rewards those businesses and their customers who support our City. Your Dubbo educates, empowers and rewards businesses for supporting a culture of positive customer service in our City.

The “10 things to know about Your Dubbo booklet” is a simple and useful tool to help you promote Dubbo through showing pride in yourself, your business, your City and your region. Each page is filled with information based on enquiries fielded through the Dubbo Visitor Information Centre – some things you may not know and others you will. Use the booklet to provide great customer experiences and share information about “Your Dubbo” – your City for service, choice and smiles.

Four people are buried in the prison grounds and the location of their bodies is still a mystery. The existing buildings seen at the Old Dubbo Gaol today were constructed in 1871, but a gaol has existed on this site since 1848. Map ref 38

OLD DUBBO GAOL

» A ‘lunatic keeper’ would sit inside padded cells to ensure ‘insanes’ didn’t harm themselves.

» When the Gaol closed in 1966, eight men had been hanged in the gallows.

HORRIFIC ACCIDENTOn the 8th April 1936, the local newspaper reported a ‘horrific accident, one of the worst in Dubbo’s history’. It occurred at the Macquarie View Hotel when one of the ‘ramshackled and unsafe’ wooden verandahs holding 80 people ‘smashed to the footpath’. Twenty eight people were admitted to hospital with injuries, while only one fatality was recorded (although it is believed there were others). Map ref 1
