Prime Minister Stephen Harper has rejected suggestions his government is considering pushing through the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipe-line across northern British Columbia.

Harper was asked about Enbridge Inc.’s pipeline project at a stop in Vancouver on Aug. 6, and the frequent accusation he has already decided it is in

the national interest for it to proceed.

“I’ve been very clear that decisions on these kinds of projects are made through an independent evaluation con-ducted by scientists into the economic costs and risks that are associated with the project.

“I think that’s the only way governments can handle controversial projects of this manner, to ensure things are evaluated on an independent basis, scientifically, and not

simply on political criteria.”Harper told reporters he

has spoken with B.C. Premier Christy Clark and other pre-miers about pipelines, but those conversations are private. It’s his first public comment since a dispute erupted between Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford in July over Clark’s demand for more revenues.

“I’m not going to get into an argument or discussion about how we divide hypothetical revenues,” Harper said.

He did emphasize that in general, it is important for Canada to diversify its trade and open up new markets in Asia. The federal government is planning “huge investments” to improve environmental pro-tection for shipping resource material, but it won’t favour any individual project, he said.

By Diana ForsterAug. 18 was the

hottest day in mem-ory for those entering the 55th Bridge Lake Fair (BLF) at Interlakes Hall.

This may have affected baking entries, which were down, although overall entries were up three per cent, and entrants numbered 10 per cent more than last year. Garden pro-duce suffered from our appalling spring, and provided fewer entries than usual.

There were five container contest entries, for plants grown in any old bucket or pail. The perennial first place winner was Elaine Kisby, who won the Horse Lake Garden Centre $50 gift cer-tificate. Arlene Henzel was second and won $25 from La Petite Diane Antique Restoration, while Sharon Stewart won $10 from Danco’s Horse Trimming for third.

Three people cor-rectly guessed there were 78 candies in the jar, so a draw deter-mined the jar went to Gavin Ma.

Three trophies were awarded to the same people for the second consecutive year. The Art Grange Memorial Trophy for Best of Show Collection of Garden Vegetables, donated by Patricia Spencer, went to Michelle Probert.

The Aunt Norma Memorial Trophy for Hi-Point Preserving, donated by the Kisby Family, went to Helen Zander (33 points). Quesnel’s David Carlyle won the Rhu Castle Cup for Best of Show Wine - a black-berry merlot.

The 2012 BLF Roving Trophy for Best of Show Photograph, went to Gun Granberg’s shot of little Lee “driving” a farm machine.

The Granny Larson Memorial Trophy for Best of Show Quilt went to Celia Visscher, a beautiful

“group-made” strip robin quilt depicting a Cariboo scene. The credit must also go to Pam Canty, Laura Colgan, Gyl Connaty, Lorraine Faessler and Marilyn Sedford.

N i n e - y e a r - o l d Jimmy Kinnear’s 16 entries, which scored 33 points and was the highest student point count in recent mem-ory won the Hi-Point Student award, donat-ed by the Interlakes Cattlebelles.

The Grand Aggregate trophy went to first-time win-ner Linda Farthing

The 13th Annual South Cariboo Garlic Festival a huge suc-cess, organizer Jeanette McCrea says, adding she is “very pleased.”

Estimating there were more than 3,000 went through the festival gates, McCrae notes the event’s popularity has grown significantly from last year’s 2,500 visitors.

People shopped at the 65 different vendors for food and goodies, which included a number of varieties of fresh garlic.

People could sit in the shade under new covers built over the picnic tables, as they were comfort-able while enjoying a variety of excellent

Pasanen (eight years) 83%

BLF paid out $940.50 in prize money, of which $51 was donat-ed back and $20 was donated to Roe Lake & District Recreation C o m m i s s i o n (RLDRC.)

Cheerful music was provided by Paul Faessler’s Coffin Dodgers all day, and well supplemented by Nice ‘n Easy, and South Cariboo Idol contestants Jason Ruscheinsky and Kenny Sperling. Leslie Brown, “Our Lady of Spain,” thrilled the visitors with two beautiful Spanish dances.

The inaugural cakewalks were supremely successful and will no doubt be repeated next year. L. Farthing and Kim Walters to whom BLF is very grateful baked the four first-place cakes, and multiple cupcakes for the non-winners.

Interlakes youth

group, Kids Space, ran a Kids Corner, which also went over well.

The children’s best-dressed bicycle parade had few young entries, and none in the older group. Judge Carolyn Cook, British Columbia High School Rodeo Southern Ambassador, award-ed first place to four-year old Vincent Colbert’s volunteer firefighter bicycle, and second place to his sister, two-year-old Violet.

Carolyn also gave horse-riding demon-

strations, while Liz McMann, the “chain-saw girl,” wowed the crowd with her dexterous wield-ing of chainsaws; and Seabloom Mini Ranch’s wee horses demonstrated horse and cart driving.

The animals from Alpaca Story Ranch, Cole Cunningham and New-Cal Rabbit Farm were as popular as ever, as was Siana Kelly’s Saori weav-ing, which was well practised by many visitors.

Good eats were provided by both Highway 24/

Interlakes Lions and the Interlakes Cattlebelles.

Garry Ruscheinsky, June Forsberg and Megan Mooney won door prizes of beau-tiful stained glass pieces, created by Sheridan Lake resi-dent Michele Kaluza.

The silent auction, of items donated by generous community businesses, raised $314.50.

The closing auction of donated entries netted $227.50, which goes to RLDRC to thank it for free use of the hall and grounds for the weekend.

South Cariboo Health Foundation fund-raising co-ordinator M-J Cousins, left, foundation treasurer Bill Robertson, right, presented a certificate of appreciation to 100 Mile House Save-On-Foods store manager Bruce Caspar for his support and encouragement during the recent Pointing the Way to Health event. Save-On Points donated by shoppers, which were matched by the store, plus donations of gift bas-kets and supplies for hotdog sale days contributed more than $4,500 to the foundation’s goal to raise $100,000 to purchase high-tech equipment for the local health centre.

South Cariboo Health Foundation treasurer Bill Robertson, right, present-ed a certificate of appreciation to 108 Golf Resort manager Jeff Kendy, left, and golf pro Andy Wahnschaff for their support and assistance with the foundation’s recent golf tournament. Despite the inclement weather, $2,500 was raised and everyone had a great time.

Cariboo entertain-ment on stage.

On Sunday, the aroma of garlic waft-ed over the site, as the three cook-off finalists prepped and cooked their magical creations.

Gina Myhill-Jones of 100 Mile House cooked her Garlic Beef Explosion Rolls and took home $1,000 for her effort.

Quesnel resident Shannon Johnston won $500 for her Rosie’s Garlic Perogies, and Vernon resident Steven McCrea took home

$250 for his Pork Rolls & Dip.

Judges Ted Boyd from the Firehouse Diner, Leon Chrétien from Sunrise Ford,

John McCarvill from Yummers and Palamino’s Restaurant, and Heidi Read from Higher Ground Natural Foods sampled and savoured these tasty dishes.

McCrea suggests people start getting their recipe entries ready and send them in to her for next year’s cook-off.

Elvis Elite Steve

Elliot closed the garlic festival with his high-energy performance that entertained the crowd.

He tossed out stuffed teddy bears to the young chil-dren, while singing “Teddy Bear,” and got the crowd singing along to his Elvis, Roy Orbison and Louis Armstrong melodies.

Noting they try to change it up a bit and make improvements, McCrea says plans are already under-way for next year’s event.

Funds raised from the Garlic Festival will go towards upcoming Lac la Hache Community Club projects.

Nearly a sold-out affair, the Second Annual Rotary Club Lobsterfest is being held in the 100 Mile Community Hall on Sept. 15, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

With only 200 tickets being sold for this all-you-can-eat fresh lobster dinner, including salads and desert, tickets are selling fast.

There are very

few tickets left avail-able, Rotary Club of 100 Mile president Maureen Pinkney says, adding they are going fast.

She notes, how-ever, the club is still looking for a few door prizes and silent auc-tion items. Charitable tax receipts will be made available to donors.

Contact Pinkney and she will make

arrangements to have items picked up. To make a donation or

get information about tickets, call Pinkney at 250-395-0462.

Clark initially said her government would wait until the federal assessment of Enbridge is concluded in 2013 before deciding whether to support it. Then in late July, the B.C. Liberal government presented a list of five precondi-tions, including a positive recommendation from the federal review.

The others are “world-leading” oil spill prevention and response capability on land and at sea, meeting legal requirements to consult and accommodate aboriginal groups along pipeline routes, and a “fair share” of oil revenues for B.C.
