Thank you’s and kudos to Carol Lowe!
Carol, a dear friend of many, many of us Tropics residents, has helped
the Park in all sorts of ways, from kitchen volunteer, to chair of the disas-
ter committee, to distributor of The Breeze. Now she wishes to be excused
from the latter task. A big thank you to Carol, and a welcome to JoAnn
Harteau, who becomes our newest distributor hero. Happy day, ladies!

May Message from Board President Richard Stoll
Three months until this Board is finished! We have had a great year with
three more great events coming, Latin Night, Hawaiian Night and Appreciation
dinners. We are seeing MORE residents coming to the Breakfast and Dinners. If
you are a new resident, use your coupons to visit the events that are for you.
At the General Meeting this month, May 9th, find out who is running for the
Board next year. You will also have the opportunity to nominate someone for the
offices. I know a lot of you are still working, but we have accommodated the two
board members this year that are still working. It is very rewarding to be involved
in the park activities and decisions. The answer the Board is giving people that
complain: “Are you volunteering to help?”
Since our doctors keep telling us to do more exercise, the Tropics have
several programs and opportunities 1) Spring Chickens—every Tuesday and
Thursday at 8:30am; 2) Spectrum fall Prevention Class—Every Tuesday and
Thursday at 1:30pm; 3) Yoga—Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:15 am; 4) a
Tai-Chi class every Wednesday at 10 am; 5) the swimming pool is heated now; 6)
New exercise equipment in the pool restrooms; 7) walking the park on the paths
or on the road.
Many more changes are coming to the park. We have new curtains on the
stage. The resident club bought another large screen TV for the Dining room.
Ernie has been using this for a slide show of photos taken during events. He also
used it on St. Patrick’s Dinner to tell us why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. I’m
sure it will be used more often. Did you notice the new covers on the pool tables?
Bingo is really going strong. If you “want to see paint dry” we have Bingo
every Wednesday night. Also, I am seeing more people coming to the Snack Bar
Wednesday nights. I enjoy coming up with new recipes every week. This is
Melody Peterson’s and my 4th year co-chairing Bingo.
Last reminder we need a Breeze editor for next year. Michael is willing to
train a new person. It can be a lot of fun and rewarding. Let us know.
See you all Thursday night, May 9 at the General Meeting
MILLENNIUM MEMO Some good news this month: The Tropics refinancing seems to be moving right along. Because of publishing deadlines I’m typing this on April 4, but I’m predicting that we got City approval at its April 9 Council Meeting, gave Bond Investors a Park Tour on April 23 (St. George’s Day!) and received a high bond rating by April 30. If all goes well, we’ll close on the new bonds around mid-May. Once this happens, The Tropics will add an additional $1M to the Capital Improvement Fund, have $200-$300K more each year to spend on Park operations and the Housing Assistance Program) and, for the first time, have Earthquake Insurance, a $60K cost. Your rent dollars will work even harder. Wish us luck! SPARC in The Tropics Thanks to Stacee and the folks at SPARC, our resident services partner, for sponsoring the Senior Resource Fair. 80 or so residents interacted with 22 vendors, 3 health screening stations (dental, blood pressure & strength/gait)…there was even a Gardening Station. The highlight may have been the amazing Hawaiian Performance, which entertained during the FREE lunch. After lunch, Spectrum gave a demonstration of the Exercise Classes they’ll be sponsoring every Tuesday & Thursday. For all this, Stacee gets this month’s Kudo. There is Other News…
Miguel might officially be the happiest person at The Tropics, now that Jorge is back and Juan has joined the Maintenance Staff. Miguel can finally take a moment and catch his breath, although he’ll probably just keep working.
Next up for SPARC: Smartphone Training Classes, set for May 24 & June 3. One day will be Android phones, the other IPhones, although I’m not sure which day is which.
Recent expenditures: Refurbish Pool Tables ($1,816), Stage Curtains ($2,200) and all those new Locks & Keys for the Pool, Restrooms, Laundry Room and BBug ($2,600).
Mother’s Day Tribute My mother once told me: “You won’t amount to anything because you’re always procrastinating.” My reply at the time: “Oh yeah? You just wait!” A little tough love that paid off for me—although I didn’t know it at the time. She passed years ago but I thank her daily for all she did for me, including giving me this bit of good advice: “If at first you don’t succeed, try doing it the way I told you.” Now have a Happy Mother’s Day! Wedding bells rang out at 192 Hawaii Circle for

Manager’s Corner for May 2019
We had a great turnout at the Resource Fair last month and Stacy Price of SPARC did a great job
with obtaining vendors, entertainment and, of course, good food. Many of you cleaned out
closets and Kathy Vincent delivered the clothing to Tri-Valley Thrift Store. They really
appreciated the donations.
April showers bring May flowers and also weeds. Please try to maintain your landscaping so
the weeds do not encroach on to your neighbors. Maintenance personnel (Miguel, Jorge and
Juan) have been busy cleaning up guest parking areas, pathway shrubs and also cleaning the
street lights to make our common areas more attractive. The new benches have been a great
addition as well.
Warmer weather brings out solicitors too - Please do not open your door to them as they are
never welcome in our Park. When we get calls that they are in the Park we try to locate them
to avoid any of our residents getting scammed. We are 50% successful, but they are slick and
hide when they see us coming.
Busy month ahead with Mother’s Day, Cinco De Mayo and Memorial Day. Food, fun and
festivities. Enjoy and stay safe.
