    Appendix A - AssumptionsRegister

Item Criteria/constraints Requirements and Assumpt ions

Connection tunnel to main tunnel Seventy degree angled connections arepreferred but allowing exceptions where theconstruction risk associated with a longerconnection in the Thanet sand and chalk

becomes excessive.3 Connection with Lee tunnel

Connection to Lee tunnel Connection to Lee tunnel to be either atBecton overflow shaft or Abbey Mills shaft F.

    4 Main tunnel TBM selection

Geological factors in TBM selection TBMs and Drive Strategy to suit groundconditions

Drives rates Drive rates to be consistent with "Base line rev3" programme plus EPBM in Chalk reduced to50m/week

5 Tunnel const ruction and intervention st rategy

Tunnel drive length Drive lengths to be dependent upon therequirements of meeting the overall contractprogramme dates.

TBM Intervention Strategy It is assumed that there will be no need forintermediate shafts to carry out planned TBMinterventions

Intermediate shaft requirements Intermediate shafts may be required forconstruction of the secondary lining.

    6 Shaft requirements

Distance between Main tunnel shafts forpermanent access

9km maximum distance, but to be minimisedwhere possible. Equipment and methodologywill be developed to inspect and maintain thetunnel.

Permanent installation - General All main and intermediate access shaftlocations are to provide for the followingpermanent structures:1) Ventilation building

    Appendix A - AssumptionsRegister

Item Criteria/constraints Requirements and Assumpt ions

Marine transport Marine transport is to be favoured over landtransport. The policy is for all excavatedmaterial to be transported by marine facility atmain tunnel shaft sites.

Land transport Land transport should be minimised in favourof marine transport. It is likely that specificcontaminated materials will need to betransported to special disposal sites via roadtransport.

Segment supply main tunnels No specific limitations have been placed onthe supply of tunnel segments, which dependupon the location of the manufacturing facility.

Power is available for TBM drives at all main drive sites

    8 Excavated material handling anddisposal

No assumption has been made regardingdisposal sites

Waste management strategy document todefine disposal. This document is to beproduced

    10 Third-party inf rastructure impact

The tunnel and shafts shall not endangerthird-party structures

Thames Tunnel shall be designed to minimisethe impact to third-party infrastructure as far asreasonably practicable
