August 9, 2020 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples ex-claimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly at-tuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disci-ples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD said to Elijah: “Stand on the mountain; the LORD will be passing by” (1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a). Psalm — Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading — To the Israelites belong the covenants, the law, and the patriarchs; and from them comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel — As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33). August 9, 2020 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In our Church, we enjoy many Tradi ons and tradi ons of the Faith. There are those things which we pass down, and they are recognized as central to our belief, such as the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and the Immaculate Concep on of the Blessed Virgin Mary; these are Tradi ons, with a capital “T”. There are other prac ces of the Faith, great and small, which would fall into the category of tradi ons, with a small “t”, such as scapulars and first Friday devo ons. This is not to say that they are not important, but they are not universally prac ced, and those who do not share in these devo ons are not cut off from other avenues of God’s grace.

Because of Her importance in the history of our salva on, the Virgin Mary plays a major role in many of our Tradi ons and tradi ons. As men oned already, central to our Faith are the Dogmas of the Immaculate Concep on, where we believe that Mary was conceived without the stain of Original Sin, so as to be a perfect vessel for Christ, and the Assump on, that Mary was brought body and soul up to heaven upon her death, which is celebrated this coming Saturday. Of course, we also profess Mary to be the Mother of God, as we believe that Jesus was truly God and truly Man, and that these natures were not divisible in Him; therefore Mary was the Mother of both Jesus the Man and Jesus the Second Person of the Trinity. These are Capital “T” Tradi-

ons.

One of our tradi ons, small “t” is the Angelus, which recalls the Annuncia on by the Angel Gabriel, to Mary, that she would be-come the Mother of Jesus, through the Holy Spirit. For those unfamiliar with the prayer: The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary.... Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary.... And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary.... Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarna on of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrec on, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen. In Ireland, I was always amazed when the Ange-lus Bell would ring out on the radio or TV, at Noon and 6pm (someone said it rang at 6am, but I wasn’t up then), and everybody would stop what they were doing, even driving, to pray along together. Personally, I think if the tradi on was resumed, there would be a lot more Holiness, just because it would bring people together and direct their collec ve gaze outward and up to-wards God.

One tradi on, that was introduced to me by a friend, whose mother passed it along to her, and back through the ages, deals with the Feast of the Assump on, which we observe on Saturday, though this year it is not a Holy Day of Obliga on. It is a tradi on in their house, and I have been following it as best I can, to go a dipp one’s feet into the ocean, or another body of water, as it is believed that the waters are blessed on that day. The tradi on is that as Mary was Assumed into heaven, her tears fell to the Ocean, blessing it, and that every year the blessing repeated on the waters, so the healing effects of the blessed waters would come to those who par cipated. It is also a custom to collect water in a bo le, to bring it to those who are not able to ac vely par cipate in this ac on. This of course is a wonderful ac vity to bring us closer together, and to prac ce the communion that we believe is our through our common Faith, and the prac ce of receiving the Eucharist, in Communion. One of the greatest aspects of our Marian Tradi ons and tradi- ons, is that they also direct us back to Christ, just as Mary always directs us to He Son, sta ng “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) Pax, Fr. Henry

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morn-ing Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initia-tive is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fis-cally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this ef-fort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input, so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningsta-rinitiative.org .

2020 The Year of Laudato Si’, Care of --Our Common Home How do you care for our common home?

“In the encyclical Laudato Si,, Pope Francis observed that “the ecological crisis is also a summons to profound interior conver-sion.” where “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue, it is not an optional or secondary aspect of our Christian experience ”(no 217). On occasion of the fifth anniversary of the encyclical, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development has announced a year of celebration to encourage the faithful to embrace it’s message on the care of our common home. The Catholic Church throughout the United States has joyfully received and implemented the invitation of Laudato Si’ in diverse and creative ways..” Excerpt from USCCB.org Check In at FORMED for new releases on Our Common Home. There will be links to discussion questions for journaling and/or discussions with family and friends. This will be on our Facebook page each week along with articles, and thought’s. Five years ago Pope Francis formed the Global Catholic Climate Network to see to the implementation of Laudato Si’, GCCM trains, teaches and holds weekly worldwide prayer sessions. They protest, train, enable and listen to the cry’s of the poorest in our home. first to aid and educate then to make everyone aware and how we can help. It is Catholic Social Justice teachings brought into digestible pieces for you. Have some ideas please write then on our Facebook page to start a discussion. If enough of you comment we will create a new page. You may explain how you do your part or send in pictures. We have only one planet and most would like it to be beautiful for our future generations. So what can we do?
