Dear Families and Community Members,

And so here we are –the month of June – the time to wrap up another exciting school year and prepare for a much deserved summer vacation to recharge, relax, or embark on new opportunities and experiences. For some of us, it is also a time of unwinding, reflection and thinking about new beginnings.

The end of the school year is always an exciting time when we have the opportunities to enjoy the talents of many students who have worked really hard all semester long. It is wonderful to see the variety of shows put on by differ-ent departments. Late in May, we hosted a couple of exciting drama shows including a Grade 11 Short Play Festival and the Tony Award winning musical Spamalot. Both evenings showcased the many talents coming out of WCI’s drama studio. The Arts West Visual Arts show, Branching Out, was also a wonderful showcase of student creativity and expression.

The month of June got quickly underway with a wonderful performance from the Grade 9 Arts West Drama, Coming of Age, a night of song, dance and lots of laughter. There was certainly an abundance of young, promising talent among this group. Our Music students put on another wonderful evening of song and emotion known as Springfest, an annual concert with a variety of musical talents including vocals, winds, and jazz. These young musicians work hard all year to delight us with their performances of classical and contemporary music suited for all ages. Looking ahead, the Grade 10 drama students will be putting on a Short Play Festival in Studio 150. WCI’s Arts West Dance students will present A Journey Through the Brain. We are also preparing to wrap up all of the spring sports with tournaments and a banquet to celebrate all of our athletes and their successes this semester. We hope you have been able to join us for some of these spectacular events – WCI students never disappoint.

The last month of the school year is also marked with all of our students working on culminating activities and pre-paring for final examinations. We know that this is a time of pressure and many long nights. Students should work with their teachers, map out due dates, and pace their work schedule so that they don’t leave everything until the last minute. We want our students to succeed but this comes with good time management, organization, and seeking clarification when needed. Our Grade 9 Math students will be participating in the mandatory EQAO math assessment for which their teachers are getting them prepared. We wish them good luck!

Exams run between Wednesday, June 19 to Tuesday, June 25. Exams begin promptly at 10:00. We urge students to get a good night’s sleep and eat a hearty breakfast before coming to school on exam days. The schedule has been posted on the school website and each student will be able to see the schedule on Teach Assist. Exam Feedback Day is on June 26 with a modified schedule. Classes will be held in the afternoon for students to review their exams with their teachers. Dismissal will be at 3:20. We wish all students good luck on their final exams!!

The month of June can be bittersweet as we watch our Grade 12 students finish their high school career and cel-ebrate their accomplishments in reaching this milestone. We wish them all the best as they move on to different paths, accept new opportunities and challenges, make new friendships, and venture on to their next journey in life. We are very proud of their accomplishments and look forward to celebrating the graduating class of 2019 on June 27. If you require additional Grad tickets, they will go on sale on a first come, first serve basis on June 10 for $10 each. See the Guidance website for additional information. We look forward to seeing you at the Paradise Banquet Hall to celebrate our graduates and wish them all the best.

Wishing you a happy June and a wonderful summer,

Barb Caravella

Vice-Principal

Westmount CI Arts Westmount Dance

The Arts Westmount Dance Program presents, A Journey Through the Brain Monday, June 10 & Tuesday, June 11 at 7pm at the Vaughan City Playhouse Theatre. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through Mrs. Harte and Mrs. Hopkins or at the door.

Rouge Valley

Ms. Wodlinger's and Ms. Latford's Grade 9s had a great day out in Rouge Valley Urban National Park on Thursday May 30th. They tested water quality of local streams (it was good news!), learned random sampling techniques for population biology, and discovered different land uses in Toronto. All this geography and science while enjoying the sunshine, and adding quite a few steps to their daily physical activity count. We look forward to bringing more classes in the future.

OFSAA Tennis On Monday June 4 and Tuesday June 5, our Senior Boys Doubles tennis team of Dylan Weltman and Michael Nissan, competed at OFSAA. The event, which took place at the Aviva Tennis Centre at York University, consisted of the top tennis players in the province. SNAP

On May 30, our Community Class participated in the Regional Track and Field SNAP event. We did 100 and 200 meters runs, running and standing jumps, standing ball toss, and an obstacle course. We swept all the ribbons for our participation in every event. Every one was very tired and hungry! It was a perfect day!

• Construction will continue at all ten Vaughan vivastations

• Medians, planter boxes for trees and greenery, and construction of new, wider sidewalks throughout the corridor.

• Planting trees and greenery begins this year in some areas and will continue into next year [due to the short planting window].

• The multi-use path will be constructed on Highway 7 on the expanded bridge over Highway 400.

• Final paving of black asphalt, and paving the red asphalt in the centre bus rapidway lanes and intersections.

The vivaNext rapidway project is being built near your school.

Spring 2019

spring school newsletter

It’s time for a look-ahead at what’s coming up as we move into the final year of major construction on Highway 7 West and Bathurst & Centre in Vaughan. The rapidway is scheduled to open for service by the end of 2019, so, in short: It’s going to be busy!

things to be aware of:

• While we aim to balance the needs of commuters, businesses, area residents, the community at large and the project, overnight work and road closures are sometimes unavoidable.

• We understand that this type of work is disruptive to those who live, work and commute in the area, and crews take steps to reduce the impacts where possible.

• These work activities may have impacts such as vibration, noise and dust.

We know construction is messy and may look chaotic at times. Rest assured there is a methodical approach to what needs to be done, which is carefully planned and scheduled before work begins.

safety during rapidway construction is crucial – your family counts on it

Pay attention to posted signs in and around construction zones.Because construction zones change as work progresses, it’s especially important for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers – to pay attention to posted signs. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures and shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

Cross at the designated crosswalk. It can be tempting to cross in the middle of the road, but this can be very dangerous. Instead, cross at a designated crosswalk. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.

Obey the posted speed limit in construction zones. Active construction zones often have reduced speed limits for good reason. To protect construction workers and pedestrians, it’s crucial for drivers to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.

The value of patience. While construction can often be messy and look chaotic, we’re working hard to transform the corridor to a complete street with sidewalks, bike lanes and rapid transit. We sincerely mean it when we say your patience is appreciated.

SCHOOL BUS CANCELLATION NOTICE

Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans and taxis will not oper-ate. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries which prevents the ability to cancel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology.

When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and rescheduled.

Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled. Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the after-noon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home. A bus cancellation message will be available at www.schoolbuscity.com, by calling 1-877-330-3001, or by following @YRDSB and @YCDSB on Twitter.

Parents, students and school staff may also access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information: RADIO 590 AM 640 AM 680 AM 860 AM 1010 AM 1050 AM 1540 AM 1580 AM 88.5 FM 89.9 FM 92.5 FM 93.1 FM 94.9 FM 95.9 FM 97.3 FM 98.1 FM 99.1 FM 99.9 FM 101.1 FM 102.1 FM 104.5 FM 100.7 FM 105.9 107.1 FM TELEVISION CITY TV CTV Barrie CTV Toronto CP24 GLOBAL NEWS
