Reducing emissions in sensitive areas The following operational data is measured by Polarcus:

• Engine Specification – Power consumption by propulsion and compressor units – Power consumed by all other loads and losses – Power produced, power plant efficiency and utilization

• Fuel specifications – Sulphur content % – Carbon content % – Density

• Fuel consumption • NOx emissions

– Per power plant, daily and monthly (kg) – NOx reduction, daily and monthly (kg) – Urea consumption

• SOx emissions • CO² emissions

Operational efficiency = reduced emissions

Acquisition Bonus Scheme Metrics

Actual vs Modeled Performance: • 23% less fuel consumed for project • 9% less fuel consumed per day • 4% less fuel consumed per sq.km Due to: • Highly efficient seismic acquisition:

• Very low technical downtime • Good production speed • Low infill

• Highly efficient vessel: • Efficient engines • Ship Energy Efficiency

Acoustic emissions: mitigating seismic concerns

• Polarcus is the only 3D seismic operator in the industry to have Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) systems permanently installed on all vessels

• Reducing source output – Big is not necessarily best

• Cetacean issues

– Coexistence with cetaceans

• Streamer technology

– Solid is better than fluid or gel

Ice Management – preparation is key

• Characteristics of ice determines mitigation methods – Ice floes of varying density (eg Baffin Bay)

– Shifting solid ice packs (eg Canadian Beaufort)

– Sea ice (eg East Greenland)

– Pack ice (eg North-East Greenland

• Key principles: – Timely satellite data transmission to the project is critical

– Multiple sources of ice / satellite data is valuable

– Intervention (active) vs avoidance (passive) mitigation techniques

Page 19: >100,000 sq.km of high end projects - Willis · PDF file• Accompanied by Nuclear Ice-Breaker ... – 1 x Senior Ice Specialist ... FORECAST 2013-2018 : 3D in sq. km: 0: 5,000. 10,000.

Ice Management

• Detecting and monitoring of ice is the key to mitigating risk

• Polarcus / Shell / Maersk collaborated Ice Management Plan

• The plan defines the strategy, response criteria and responsibilites – 1 x Senior Ice Specialist (Ice Coordinator) on each Survey Vessel

– 1 x Ice Specialist on each survey vessel

– 2 x Ice Specialists on each support vessel

– Enhanced radar systems installed on all vessels

Crew Change Logistics

• All vessels are crew changing every 6-weeks

• Charter aircraft from Iceland direct to Upernavik

• Crew transported offshore by supply vessel

• Offshore transfers either by gangway, davit to davit, or small boat

• Offsigners fly out of Upernavik on chartered aircraft direct to Iceland

• Crew change duration is just over 48 hours

Category 1 No ice or open water with icebergs. Solution: Conventional equipment + effective ice management.

In progress

Streamer operations in Arctic waters;

Category 2 Sea ice. Solution: All towed equipment must by fully submerged.

Page 29: >100,000 sq.km of high end projects - Willis · PDF file• Accompanied by Nuclear Ice-Breaker ... – 1 x Senior Ice Specialist ... FORECAST 2013-2018 : 3D in sq. km: 0: 5,000. 10,000.

Under-Ice Streamer Towing Preliminary design study has identified the following critical areas: Vessel towing arrangement Towing arrangement for lead-in cables, deflector ropes and source umbilical are being evaluated to avoid impact from sea ice. Deflector devices Deflectors must be fully submerged at sufficient depth to avoid collision with sea ice. Alternative deflector systems are being developed. Streamer front-end (depth control) No surface float can be used for front-end depth control. Alternative depth control systems are being evaluated. Source towing and depth control No surface float can be used for depth control. New source depth control/float systems are being developed. Positioning With no surface floats (tail buoys) new methods must be used to tie together GPS/acoustic positioning. Alternative methods must be developed.

2015 Arctic Development Project status: - Design study has identified critical areas of focus requiring critical equipment - Feasible solutions for all critical areas (previous slide) have been identified - Internal objective to deliver 4 x 6000m @ 100m separation under-ice by 2015 - Polarcus in dialogue with various industry stakeholders about co-development

Identified solutions are largely based on available technology.
