    Writing your chapter summary

Important:This screen does not have spellcheck. So, its best to first write it in a txt or rtf file (without any formatting).

Paste your final draft in the summary window, then add the formatting.

You can add original or open-source images.

Important: always use a white font color. Other light colors are also permitted.

    Page 5

    The childs point of view

In the summary, it is not necessary to re-type the chapter title, Hint, or Lesson Summary. That will be added by the developers later.

An important note on length: Keep summaries short and sweet, around 2,500 characters. The objective is to help the child understand the lesson while they are doing the activities. Clarity is key. Being child-friendly is a must.

  • Adding imagesPlease be sure to include images in at least every first chapter of every theme. Research has shown that images increase the childs enjoyment of the app.

    Page 6

Upload: You can browse your computer (e.g. to upload original images or screen shots). Only upload images that are .jpg .gif and .png

Open Source: You can also add an open-source image provided you first download it to your computer then upload it to this online platform.

Important: it is imperative that all images are original or contain open-source information.

You can create an uploaded image bank. Every time you want to add an image, click on its link.

Images are limited to 80 ko per image.

This notifies the developers if copyright has been included.

Every image must include copyright information. Add that here.

Scanning: You can scan documents (e.g. for hand-drawn mathematical diagrams) and upload them onto the system.

  • Adding imagesEvery image must include copyright information. Add that here.

    Dont forget to SAVE!

Please be sure to include images in at least every first chapter of every theme. Research has shown that images increase the childs enjoyment of the app and understanding of the lesson.

Avoid questions such as highlight the image (e.g. child touches the image to get the correct answer) because it isnt possible to design the app for that.

Apps for Language Arts: at least 100 images. Apps for Health: at least 300 images.Apps for Math: at least 300 images. Apps for Science: at least 300 images.

    Creating Exercises

Go to the page with the chapter headings.

You will see a page that will eventually list all of the exercises for that chapter. To add an exercise, click on Add record

Each chapter should have at least 12 different exercises.

The childs point of viewRandom: the user will see this exercises randomly.

Exercise: instructions are limited to 300 characters. Short and sweet is best.

Image: You can upload an image for this exercise.

Hint: This helps the child to answer. Hints can also include an image. You can use basic formatting in the hint. (e.g. ; ; ) Dont forget to Validate before you click back.

The child clicks on iTooch to see the hint and the lesson summary.

    Exercise

Exercises are groups of tasks carried out by the child. We ask that each chapter contain a minimum of 12 different exercise types. Of these 12, please create 2-4 exercises in a sequence. For more information on sequence exercises, see page 16.

    Question

TIP: For questions that can stand along without instructions, you can leave the exercise instructions blank.

Creating Questions to ExercisesGo to the page with the exercise title youve just created.

To create questions to this exercise, click on its link.

    R: Random

You will see this page next. To create a question that is linked to the exercise, click Add Record

You will see this page next. Its set to MCQ as a default. This is where you will write the question to the exercise.

Image: You can upload an image for this question.

Response: Each question must have an answer.

Difficulty: You decide 1, 2 or 3 depending on your pedagogical opinion.

Time: The child will be timed, but its strongly recommended to give the child plenty of time to read the question, hint, summary, etc. Best to set it extra high. Multiply the time it takes an adult to answer the entire question (summary and hint included) by at least 2.5.

Points: Each question is always worth 1 point.

  • Creating Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)Go to the page where you create exercises and add a new record.

Create an exercise that lends itself well to MCQ. For example:

    Click Validate then back

Click on the link for which you will add questions. Then, as usual, click on Add record.

    Creating Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

Image: You can upload an image for MCQ.

Response: Each question must have an answer.

Since the exercise is Choose the word that is not a helping verb there is no need to re-type this in the question instructions.

Simply type the four choices and click the correct response.

MCQ can have between 2 and 4 choices.

Dont forget to SAVE!Important: when creating several MCQ, be sure to alternate, randomly, the responses between Choice 1, 2, 3, 4. Just like in a test.

  • Creating Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)Continued...

You can add questions to MCQ exercises. This is an example of a two-choice question. Its also useful for True / False questions.

You can always see for which app, theme, chapter and exercise you are writing content. In this case, you are writing a question for this exercise.

  • Creating Gapfill Questions

You can always see for which app, theme, chapter and exercise you are writing content.

Keyboard: Since the child will need to type the answer in a gap, choose the appropriate keyboard to do this. See also: page 14.

    Click on Gap fill.

Calculator: If the question requires using a calculator, click here.

    The childs point of view

Image: You can upload an image for questions if you wish.

Solution explanation: include an explanation only if it requires showing more complex results (e.g. in math). Uploading an image is also possible.

    Dont forget to SAVE!

IMPORTANT: For text responses, write in lower case only. Never start a word with a capital le3er unless it is a proper noun OR the only acceptable answer starts with a capital le3er. Responses are limited to 25 characters.

IMPORTANT If the response is a large number, typed in using the numerical keyboard, write the response with commas separaBng the thousands (e.g. 1,000,000).Responses are limited to 25 characters.

IMPORTANT: Its crucial that there is no ambiguity when it comes to the answering certain questions. For instance, in mathematics, when using Pi, please be clear if the child should only use 3.14 or when working with decimals, and rounding to the nearest nth. It should be 100% clear if the child should round up or not.

  • Important: if the response includes just numbers, choose the numeric keyboard. However if the response includes text elements, use the alpa-numeric keyboard. Numeric keyboard

Remember: For text responses, write in lower case only. Never start a word with a capital le3er unless it is a proper noun OR the only acceptable answer starts with a capital le3er. Remember: If the response is a large number, typed in using the numerical keyboard, write the response with commas separaBng the thousands (e.g. 1,000,000). For numbers that include a decimal, dont put any extra 0s aJer the decimal. For instance, if the answer is Jy cents, write: 0.5 and not: 0.50.

Remember: The only characters authorized in the response are those directly accessible throughout the alpha-numeric keyboard shown here.

Creating Text Selection QuestionsGo to the page where you create exercises and add a new record.

Just like in previous exercises, create one that lends itself well to selecting text on the screen.

    Click Validate then back

Click on the link for which you will add questions. Then, as usual, click on Add record.

Important: If you choose to include a hint for the child, its best to include in the instructions (for the exercise, for instance) that the child should Touch iTooch if you need a hint.

  • You can always see for which app, theme, chapter and exercise you are writing content.

    Creating Text Selection QuestionsContinued...

Click on Text selection. The child will touch the screen to select the text that is the correct response.

Since the exercise states the task its not necessary to repeat the instructions here.

In Response: put the sentence and indicate which words the child must touch by putting the word in: [ ] (punctuation, included if applicable)

There can be up to 3 words between [ ]

    Creating Exercises in a Sequence

Just like before, when we explained how to create exercises, go to the page with the chapter headings.

You will see a page that will eventually list all of the exercises for that chapter. To add an exercise, click on Add record

Each chapter should have at least 12 different exercises.

Choose sequential: the user will see a groups of questions linked to this exercise.

Click on the link for which you will add questions. Then, as usual, click on Add record.

You can create a sequence of questions based on one exercise. This is handy, for example, for reading comprehension texts (the child answers a group of questions based on one text) or in math where the child answers a group of questions based on one figure. Please be sure to create at least 2-4 sequence exercises per chapter.

  • Creating Sequences of Questions

This step is just like creating random questions, only this time, the questions you create for the exercise will appear in a set sequence. The child must answer question 1 before they can answer question 2.

You can click on the image you uploaded at the Exercise step to use it to help you write the questions.

Once you have finished writing Question 1, click save. Then click New Question.

When you click New Question you will see a new question window. You can choose to use only MCQ or a variation of question types provided they are feasible for that exercise.
