A.: The program is alive and well, and comeOct. 18-19 a new group of young drivers will betested at Motor Mile Speedwayin Radford, Va., as part of theDrive for Diversity Combine.

Since the on-track diversityprogram was started in 2004 toallow female and minority driv-ers a chance to compete inNASCAR racing, 40 drivershave participated in the pro-gram and have accounted for 37victories between them.

In the past, the diversity pro-gram has tried to place its driv-ers with an existing team, butnow the program has its ownrace team – Revolution Racing –that plans to compete inNASCAR’s K&N Pro Series andNASCAR’s All-American Series, both of which sanction races onshort tracks across America.

The driving force behind the Drive for Diversityis Max Siegel, who is familiar to most NASCARfans because of his former role as vice president ofDale Earnhardt Inc. He’s the CEO of RevolutionRacing and holds the same position at The 909

Group, which oversees the program.Besides the driver recruitment, the diversity

program offers a crew member program and ayouth racing initiative.

NASCAR lists diversity as its top corporate ini-tiative, and NASCAR itself has assisted The 909Group in the development of the program.

At the upcoming combine, drivers from age 16to 25 will be allowed to prove their driving skills

as well as undergo media training. One of the youngest participants is

17-year-old Kristen Wallace, an Austin,Texas, native now living in Jasper, Ga.

Following in the tire tracks of herfather Jake and brother Eric, who nowworks on the crew of Sprint Cup driv-er Greg Biffle, Wallace began racingfour years ago in Bandolero cars andnow races Pro Late Model cars andSuper Trucks at tracks includingGresham Motorsports Park andLanier National Speedway.

“This could be an opportunity totake some of the financial pressuresout of the mix and be able to focus onperformance,” Wallace said in a state-ment on her website. “I know it’s along shot to even be invited to theCombine. I’m happy to have been cho-sen. I just want to get through October

right now then we’ll see what happens and gofrom there.”

NOTEBOOKTruck series sees ratings jump

While NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series hasstruggled this year on the TV ratings front, theCamping World Truck Series has drawn betternumbers for races that ran without hitches.

The most recent race, at Las Vegas MotorSpeedway, scored a Nielsen rating of .54, up 17percent from last year.

Weak spots for the truck series, ratings-wise,were the rain-plagued season opener at Daytonaand a race at Gateway International Speedwaythat was postponed by a track light malfunction.

But recent weeks have seen strong viewer-ship, with increases in ratings for five of the pasteight races. Since July, truck series ratings areup 10 percent year-to-year, according to SPEED,the network that airs the truck races.

Bowyer: Focus on teammatesWith almost no hope for an appeal of his 150-

point penalty at New Hampshire, Clint Bowyerhas resigned himself to finishing the Chase as ateam player for Richard Childress Racing.

“I think the championship hopes are done formyself,” Bowyer told reporters at KansasSpeedway. “The thing that I have to do is be thebest teammate I can be. We have to bring achampionship home. We still have two shots atthat [teammates Kevin Harvick and JeffBurton], but for myself and our race team, I’venever finished out of the top-five in the Chaseand I want to continue that streak and want tocontinue that consistency in the Chase and Ithink that’s an attainable goal.”

Jimmie Johnson came away from thePrice Chopper 400 at KansasSpeedway with the points lead after

posting a strong second-place finish. But thebig winner, from a manufacturers’ stand-point, was the Ford Motor Company. Its carsdominated both the qualifying – as KaseyKahne and Paul Menard swept the frontrow – and the race as Greg Biffle won forthe second time this season, the second timeat Kansas and the 16th time in his career.

It was just the second win of the seasonfor Ford, and it came largely as a result ofsome information sharing among the Fordteams, according to Jamie Allison, directorof Ford North American Motorsports.

“What a great feeling for everyone atFord,” Allison said. He pointed to the factthat Fords driven by Matt Kenseth, PaulMenard and Carl Edwards were also in thelead pack for most of the race proves thatthe Ford team isn’t just a one-car wonder.

“Running one, two, three Fords with 50laps to go shows you that it is deeper thanjust one team,” he said. “I am very proud ofeverybody at Roush, [Richard PettyMotorsports] and Wood Brothers. It is a‘One Ford’ effort.”

Biffle agreed that his victory was morethan a one-team effort.

“I am so glad, not only for [team ownerJack Roush] but for all the Ford guys andRoush Fenway guys,” he said. “Everybodyhas worked so dang hard, and it makes iteven more rewarding and exciting for us.”

Roush said it was one of those raceswhere Ford had several chances to win, unlike many events earlier this year whereFords were outclassed by the Chevrolets,Toyotas and Dodges.

“We had a whole bunch of cars that couldhave won the race,” Roush said. “All of ourFords were good out there today.”

The Kansas win will be even more spe-

cial than usual for Biffle’s crew, according toteammate Carl Edwards.

“Ford told us right before the race thatthey were giving us an extra incentive towin the race,” Edwards said of the $100,000bonus – to be split among driver and team –that was put up by Ford for a race-winningeffort. “They had some extra money in afund that they weren’t using, so Greg isgoing to be handing out checks to his pitcrew. That is really cool. Ford wanted us tostep it up, and Greg did that.”

Edwards didn’t do so badly himself. Hefinished sixth and gained some ground in

the Chase for the Sprint Cup.“I was frustrated with sixth, but I found

out we are only 53 points out of the lead, sothat is huge,” he said.

While Edwards is fourth in the standings,Biffle is eighth, 85 behind Johnson. Theother Ford driver in the Chase, MattKenseth, is mired in 11th, 149 points out ofthe lead despite a seventh-place finish atKansas.

Biffle said he’s still looking at the Chaselike he can win it, and he said the best wayto do that is to do what he did at Kansas.

“We want to win these races,” he said. “Wewant to have the trophies. They’ve beentalking about all the other guys, so we’llgive them something to talk about for thenext couple weeks.

“Hopefully in California and Charlotte wecan run decent and make our way up thereinto the points, maybe get up in the topfive.”

2010 CHASE CONTENDERSPoints standings, race results from Sunday’s

Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedwayand commentary by Rick Minter

1. Jimmie Johnson 5,503 (finished 2nd)He overcame a poor qualifying effort to fin-

ish strong in the race. “I’m glad we had the fin-ish we did. There’s still a lot of racing left, butwe’re doing the right things. We’re making badweekends good weekends.”

2. Denny Hamlin –8 (finished 12th) Making the most of an off-day performance-

wise kept him close even as he lost the pointslead. “You’ve got to make the most of your baddays and if this is a bad day for us then we’regoing to rebound next weekend.”

3. Kevin Harvick –30 (finished 3rd) Another solid finish keeps him in the thick of

the Chase.“It is all about maintaining that gap.Today we were able to beat the No. 11 (Hamlin)and maintain with the No. 48 (Johnson) andthat is what we feel like we have to do.”

4. Carl Edwards –53 (finished 6th) He had to think about the Chase, even

when racing before a hometown crowd. “Ihad to be careful not to drive with my hearttoo much … It is very difficult not to throwcaution to the wind, but I knew that I could-n’t do that.”

5. Jeff Gordon –58 (finished 5th) Racing at one of his best tracks, he quali-

fied third and led 29 laps early on, but had tobattle back to get a top-five finish. “We werehoping for a little bit more than that with theway things went all weekend long.”

6. Kurt Busch –70 (finished 13th) The driver who was picked by many to

challenge Johnson for the championship sur-vived a track that is not among his best toremain well within striking distance of thepoints lead.

7. Kyle Busch –80 (finished 21st) His finish was the worst of the Chasers,

thanks to retaliation on the track from DavidReutimann, but it would have been worse hadBusch and his crew not done a remarkable jobof salvaging points.

8. Greg Biffle –85 (finished 1st) Back in the Chase hunt after a dominating

win at Kansas, he’s looking to do the same atupcoming tracks on the schedule.“Hopefully inCalifornia and Charlotte we can run decentand make our way up there into the points.”

9. Jeff Burton –101 (finished 18th) A parts failure seemed to be to blame for his

late-race plummet. “We went from having areally good race car and being able to, Ithought, contend for the win, to where wewouldn’t have stayed on the lead lap if we’dgone another run.”

10. Tony Stewart –127 (finished 4th)After stumbling in the first two Chase races,

he was back up to speed. “We’ve known we’vebeen a better team than these last two weeks. We just had bad luck the first race and thenjust a bad day the second race.”

11. Matt Kenseth –149 (finished 7th) He’s way behind in the Chase, but happy to

be running better.“I am just happy that we aremore competitive.”

12. Clint Bowyer –252 (finished 15th) The setback from a 150-point penalty after

his New Hampshire win appears to be keepinghis team in a tailspin. He’s already lost oneappeal of his penalty and has urged teamowner Richard Childress to drop the second.
