The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture Jesus had worked a miracle of healing for ten people afflicted with leprosy. They had cried out for him to have pity on them, and he did. But only one mem-ber of this group took the time to return to Jesus, fall at his feet, and thank him. Jesus affirms the one man who does the right thing: “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Jesus thus establishes this Samaritan man as our exam-ple. We too are to glorify “God in a loud voice” for all that he has done for us. So, what exactly has God done for us? What are the miracles in our lives that we have failed to notice, to believe, or to appreciate? Undoubtedly the answers will be different for everyone, with one main exception: we are all called to give thanks for the gift of life, of course. This is the first miracle God worked on our behalf! Bringing us into existence to live and love is a gift we might tend to take for granted. But surely, we can be thankful for more. We would all do well to reflect on the multitude of God’s gifts in our lives. Defending Religious Liberty Please consider coming to this interesting talk presented by Jocelyn Floyd, J.D. of the Thomas More Society on October 13th at 7pm (Rel Ed Center) spon-sored by our Multi-Parish Respect Life Committee. Grand Raffle This weekend we continue selling our Grand Raffle tickets. We have great prizes ($60,000) and at the same time this is a wonderful way of supporting our parish. Casino Night Please, mark your calendars and join us for a Casino Night on Saturday, Octo-ber 22nd at 7pm. This is going to be a great opportunity to gamble (not for real money) and have some fun together as a community. Renew My Church FYI - The Archdiocese of Chicago is working on this strategic effort meant to ensure that all the parishes stay vibrant, vital, and continues to carry out the mission of the Church. The first step in this process is to take an honest look at the significant changes and challenges we are facing. I will try to share more information on this initiative, but meanwhile please keep this process aimed at renewing the vitality of all parishes in your prayers.

The Thomas More Society is a not-for-

profit, national public interest law firm dedi-

cated to restoring respect in law for life, fam-

ily, and religious liberty. Ms. Floyd brings her

first-hand knowledge and experience of de-

fending Religious Liberty in the courtrooms of

the United States where it has become a ma-

jor issue of concern. Come hear her update

on the current attacks on Religious Liberty.

This program is part of the Knowledge and Prayer Series sponsored

by the Multi Parish Respect Life Ministries of St. Francis of Assisi,

St. Michael and Our Lady of the Woods parishes in Orland Park and

St. Bernard's and Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Parishes of

Homer Glen.


Mission Trip Reflection CJ Brncich

This past year I went on my third, and sadly my last mission trip as a member of the SFA youth group. This year our par-ish teens trav-eled to join Catho-lic Heart in the twin cities’ Minnesota area. Our week was headlined by service, prayer and lots of singing and dancing dur-ing our evening program. As the main focus of our trip being service, I was part of a group working with a charity called rebuilding the twin cities. Our projects revolved around helping out people living in less than ade-quate living condi-tions, or the eld-erly that could not keep up with the maintenance of their houses. Whether we were

there to help clean up or build a wall, they were just as grateful. They showed us their gratitude with kind w o r d s a n d prayers, they told stories of their faith that inspired us to keep on go-ing. We experienced Christ through the people we were helping because they remained

positive and faith-ful regardless of their situation. After a few of the days of service, all of the teens from our parish would get together with-out the chaper-ones and talk about what we ex-perienced and did for the day. We would also meet with everyone for parish time; we were able to hear

great stories from different perspec-tives. The thing that I am going to miss most about our parish mission trips is the way we all become so close to each other during the course of the week; we share a bond that will last for a life time. This mission trip stuck out to me because the eve-ning program was so much better and interactive than the previous mission tr ips. They really knew how to connect with all the kids there in a way that we could under-stand by doing skits and singing. Although I'm sad that my last youth mission trip is over, I will enjoy the rest of my last summer with ex-treme youth minis-try and I hope to possibly return as a young adult leader.

I'd want to thank you all for being a part of CRHP. I am so proud of your ministry. I have always grieved, when I get invited by friends in Protestant fellowships, to see them so alive with their " life groups". I am desolate whenever I hear many friends mov-ing to other churches. And having known CRHP now, my sad-ness is alleviated and I am so encouraged, more hopeful and ex-cited that finally, we can grow more and deepen our spiritual bond as Catholic brothers and sisters especially in our own parish. St. Francis Borgia Francis was a young no-bleman at the court of the king of Spain. He became a Duke when he was only 33 and lived a happy, peaceful life with his wife Eleanor and their eight children. But unlike so many other powerful nobles, Francis was a perfect Christian gentle-man, a true man of God and his great joy was to receive Holy Communion often. This happy life ended when his beloved wife died.

Francis did something that astonished all the nobles of Spain; he gave up his Dukedom to his son Charles and be-came a Jesuit priest. So many people came to his first Mass that they had to set up an altar outdoors, but his Supe-rior tested him by treat-ing in exactly the oppo-site way he had been used to all of his 41 years of life. He who had once been a Duke had to help the cook, carry-ing wood for the fire and

My surgery was on June 8th – almost 4 months ago. It is so good to be in a recovery mode and to be present at St. Francis. I have been praying about on what I have learned during this ex-perience. It was 4 days between the time I learned of the need for surgery and when I had the surgery. I was not frightened. A number of arrange-ments had to be made during those days: leaving Dubuque and being accepted at Loyola and that plan-ning occupied my time. While the Doctors ex-plained the surgery, they did not go into de-tail nor did I ask for de-tails. In reflecting, I am sur-prised at my calmness. Usually when sitting at the doctor’s office for a visit, I begin to imagine

every pain is a sign of serious illness. I wasn’t in denial but rather was able to put the operation in God’s hands. I realized the surgery was beyond my control. I was confident God was with me. And was ready to accept whatever the outcome. It helped that the health care professionals kept assuring me, “you’ll me fine”. And I was aware that people were praying for me. I also became aware of the importance of family and friends. Prayer and concern meant so much. I had many things planned for the time af-ter surgery – helping at parishes; being involved in meetings; taking time with friends: all had to be canceled. And guess what? It all carried on without me.

So what did I learn? Trust in God’s presence and be open to His will; - worry does nothing. Appreciate the impor-tance of family and friends. Be aware I am not indispensable; and want to be, “Around for a while.”

Under his guidance, the Jesuits grew to be a very great help to the Church in many lands. Through all such suc-cess, St. Francis Borgia remained completely humble.

Catholics have more than one way to pray and more than one sacrament. Yet it often seems as if our only prayer is the Mass and our only sacra-ment is the Eucharist. According to some liturgists, the worship style mainline Protestant churches use was adapted from a form of evening prayer and preaching Catholic churches used in the 15th cen-tury. And today we have the Liturgy of the Hours, Taizé prayer, solemn benediction, an increasingly common praise and worship style, and all sorts of other traditions. But one would hardly know it from the schedule posted at most Catholic parishes: “Mass times.” Mass and Eucharist itself are indeed the source and summit, but endless repetition punctuated by Stations of the Cross on Fridays in Lent runs the risk of taking the splendor and majesty of the Mass for granted rather than letting it truly be the source and summit of our worship. Similarly, in so many of our churches it seems as if

our only instrument is the electric organ, played in a certain style. But our church has been around for two millennia and instruments of all kinds have come and gone, just as singing styles have ebbed and flowed. In our own time there is increasing use of electronic and digital media, something to which the church will adapt and become accus-tomed in the same way it has done case with other great cultural and technological transforma-tions. Today, worldwide—never mind across different time periods—we know more than ever that Ca-tholicism is about unity, not uniformity. Yet if we were truly convinced of our unity, comfortable in our Catholic diversity, and focused on building a flourishing church, wouldn’t we more frequently have different sorts of public worship during the week, different ways to worship through music, and a true openness to catholicity, the universality of human expression?

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Community

The parish offices are located in the lower level of the church. Entrance is via the walkway at the west side of the church build-ing. The parish offices are open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Evenings and weekends are by appointment. The Religious Ed offices are located in the St. Francis Center, 15010 Wolf Rd.— up the hill, west of the church. Religious Ed office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Religious Ed offices are closed on Fridays. The Eucharistic Chapel is open for prayer twenty-four hours a day. The Chapel is located at the northeast corner of the Church. Religious Education Religious Education meets on alternating Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays for Grades K-8, and on Saturdays for Grades 1-8, at the Religious Education Center. Grades K-4 meet from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and grades 4-8 meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday sessions meet from 8:30—10:00 a.m. Children's Liturgy of the Word meets on Sun-days during the 9 & 10:30 a.m. masses for children 4-years-old to 4th grade, September-April. The Joseph Cardinal Bernardin School, located on the campus of St. Elizabeth Seton parish at 167th and 94th Ave., is the elementary Catholic regional school for parishioners of St. Francis. Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated every Monday, immediately after the 7:45 a.m. Mass. Those of advanced age or suf-fering from a chronic or serious illness are invited to be anointed. The priests are available to offer the Sacrament whether the ill person is at home or in the hospital. Please call 460-0042.

Baptisms

Baptisms usually take place on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays of the month at 1:30. Prior to the Baptism, parents need to call the office to make arrangements. A baptismal conference will be set up with the parents.

Marriages Weddings need to be scheduled at least four to six months in advance upon approval of a priest. Couples are reminded to secure the church date before the reception hall. Please check our website for more de-tails.

Sacrament of Reconciliation Communal celebration of the Sacrament will be held during Advent and Lent. Individual confessions are heard on Saturdays at 11:30-12:00.
