Alisons Pantry Fresh Bulk Spices

Allspice comes rom the unripe berries o a tropical evergreen tree. It is pungentand aromatic, and tastes a bit like a combination o nutmeg, clove, ginger and

cinnamon. Allspice is especially good in holiday desserts like gingerbread, spicecakes, baked apples and eggnog.

Another avorite is thisblend o cinnamon,

cloves, ginger, nutmegand allspice. Experiment

with it to nd just theright amount you desire.

It is especially goodmixed with melted butteron pumpkin and wintersquash. Add it to a cake

mix or a special treator to zucchini breadsand cookies. Pumpkinand squash pies andsweet potato dishes

are traditional uses orpumpkin pie spice. I grew

up thinking pumpkinchion pie was the only

kind there was!

Nutmeg is my husbands avoritespice. He loves it in his avorite

oatmeal and sugar cookies.Cakes and quick breads such asbanana, apple, and spice cakestaste delicious with a touch o

nutmeg. I use it in llings suchas or my cinnamon rolls andbreakast cakes. Pork is an

especially good meat to use withnutmeg. Use it in a rub with

about tsp nutmeg per poundo tenderloin.

A blend o cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice makes apple pie spice very versatile.I use it in pancakes as well as a topping or my pecan wafes; in spice cakes, pies,

and cookies. I put a little in my lling or raisin-lled cookies and with brownsugar over baked apples and crisps. ry apple pie spice in mulled drinks on a

cool evening to warm you up.

Tis is a potent spice. Use ground cloves sparingly to reach the avor you desire.It is delicious in sauces and glazes or baked ham as well as in recipes with curry.Use ground cloves in stewed ruits such as apples or rhubarb. I use cloves when Imake my pickled beets and in some relishes. Cloves are great in hot cider drinks,

cakes, and rice and tapioca puddings.
